Chikungunya is a viral fever caused by a single stranded RNA virus of the genus alpha virus of the family Togaviridae and transmitted to human by the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquito. The incubation time frame of this virus is short, enduring about 2-4 days. Chikungunya virus disease is typically self-constrained, non-lethal, with fever settling inside a couple of days. A number of conventional methods such as ELISA, RT-PCR and PCR are available for determination of chikungunya virus. Besides the advantages of being highly sensitive and selective, these methods have some drawbacks like time-cons

During September 2025-January 2026, 111 travellers (61 female/50 male; median age: 53 years) who acquired chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in Cuba were reported to GeoSentinel. Upon return, 64.2% (70/109) were potentially viraemic. Only 8.2% (9/98) had received pre-travel consultations. The CHIKV was of East-Central-South Africa genotype, closely related to Brazilian strains. International travellers can serve as arboviral outbreak sentinels and, if viraemic, risk introducing CHIKV into areas with established Aedes spp. vectors. Their effective surveillance can trigger adequate public health respons

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this systematic review of prevalence is to observe and discuss the clinical manifestations of Chikungunya Virus disease in its chronic phase.
METHODS: To be eligible, the observational studies should accompany the individuals for at least six months. The research was conducted using electronic databases MEDLINE and EMBASE. The methodological quality was evaluated using the "Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal checklist for studies reporting prevalence data" tool.
RESULTS: The search has found 175 articles. The application of the inclusion criteria defined a

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause chronic chikungunya virus disease (CHIKVD), which is characterized by persistent incapacitating arthralgia. Despite recurring CHIKV outbreaks and recent approval of a vaccine, the breadth and target of T cell responses in CHIKVD remain largely understudied. Here, we tested peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) collected from CHIKV-infected individuals against overlapping peptide pools sequentially spanning the entire CHIKV proteome. We detected robust CHIKV-specific CD4+, but not CD8+, T cell responses in infected individu

Among emergent climate-sensitive infectious diseases, some mosquito-vectored arbovirus infections have epidemiological, social, and economic effects. Dengue virus (DENV), West Nile virus (WNV), and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) disease, previously common only in the tropics, currently pose a major risk to global health and are expected to expand dramatically in the near future if adequate containment measures are not implemented. The lack of safe and effective vaccines is critical as it seems likely that emerging mosquito-vectored arbovirus infections will be con-trolled only when effective and sa

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya virus outbreaks have been associated with excess deaths at the ecological level. Previous studies have assessed the risk factors for severe versus mild chikungunya virus disease. However, the risk of death following chikungunya virus disease compared with the risk of death in individuals without the disease remains unexplored. We aimed to investigate the risk of death in the 2 years following chikungunya virus disease.
METHODS: We used a population-based cohort study and a self-controlled case series to estimate mortality risks associated with chikungunya virus disease

Mosquito-transmitted chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is the causal pathogen of CHIKV disease and is responsible for global epidemics of arthritic disease. CHIKV infection can lead to severe chronic and debilitating arthralgia, significantly impacting patient mobility and quality of life. Our previous studies have shown a live-attenuated CHIKV vaccine candidate, CHIKV-NoLS, to be effective in protecting against CHIKV disease in mice vaccinated with one dose. Further studies have demonstrated the value of a liposome RNA delivery system to deliver the RNA genome of CHIKV-NoLS directly in vivo, promotin

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted alphavirus that has caused both small- and large-scale epidemics of incapacitating musculoskeletal disease across the globe. A substantial proportion of infected individuals experience debilitating arthralgia and/or arthritis that can persist in relapsing or continuous forms for months to years, an occurrence that appears independent of viral strain and outbreak location. Due to the lack of CHIKV-specific vaccine or therapeutics, treatment of chronic CHIKV disease is limited to supportive care. Although the epidemiologic and molecular mechani

Chikungunya is a fast-mutating virus causing Chikungunya virus disease (ChikvD) with a significant load of disability-adjusted life years (DALY) around the world. The outbreak of this virus is significantly higher in the tropical countries. Several experiments have identified crucial viral-host protein-protein interactions (PPIs) between Chikungunya Virus (Chikv) and the human host. However, no standard database that catalogs this PPI information exists. Here we develop a Chikv-Human PPI database, ChikvInt, to facilitate understanding ChikvD disease pathogenesis and the progress of vaccine stu

Chikungunya virus disease (chikungunya) is a mosquito-borne infectious disease reported in at least 50 countries, mostly in the tropics. It has spread around the globe within the last two decades, with local outbreaks in Europe. The vector mosquito Aedes albopictus (Diptera, Culicidae) has already widely established itself in southern Europe and is spreading towards central parts of the continent. Public health authorities and policymakers need to be informed about where and when a chikungunya transmission is likely to take place. Here, we adapted a previously published global ecological niche

BACKGROUND: The main aim of this study was to investigate the percentage of individuals who developed long-term disabilities after chikungunya virus (CHIKV) disease on the basis of follow up time interval and its associated risk factors.
METHOD: In this meta-analysis, electronic databases PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar were searched to identify cohort studies of CHIKV disease from January 2000 to June 2018. Total 28 eligible studies were selected for analysis. The pooled prevalence rate (PR), risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for both effect measures were calculated

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Although many patients with chikungunya virus disease (CHIKVD), an arboviral disease characterized by sudden fever and incapacitating poliartralgia, develop chronic articular symptoms, the mechanisms involved in CHIKVD's chronification and its possible biomarkers remain poorly understood. Interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-21, IL-22, IL-29, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β have been implicated in the pathogenesis of other inflammatory joint diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Since chronic manifestations of CHIKVD share man

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a re-emerging arbovirus capable of causing chronic arthralgia, which can last for months to years. Although neutralizing antibodies have been shown to be important for viral clearance, is it not clear whether the quantitative and qualitative nature of antibodies play a role in progression to chronic disease.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize and compare the antibody responses in acute and chronic patients in a prospective observational CHIKV study in Curaçao during the 2014-2015 outbreak.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed virus neutralization tests and ELISA on pl

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infections can cause severe and debilitating joint and muscular pain that can be long lasting. Current CHIKV vaccines under development rely on the generation of neutralizing antibodies for protection; however, the role of T cells in controlling CHIKV infection and disease is still unclear. Using an overlapping peptide library, we identified the CHIKV-specific T cell receptor epitopes recognized in C57BL/6 infected mice at 7 and 14 days post-infection. A fusion protein containing peptides 451, 416, a small region of nsP4, peptide 47, and an HA tag (CHKVf5) was express

Chikungunya virus is a mosquito-borne alphavirus that causes an acute febrile illness with severe polyarthralgia. The first local transmission of chikungunya virus in the Western Hemisphere was reported in December 2013. In the following year, the virus spread throughout much of the Americas and the number of cases among travelers increased substantially. We reviewed the epidemiology of chikungunya virus disease cases reported among U.S. travelers from 2014 to 2016. A total of 3,941 travel-acquired cases were reported from 49 states and the District of Columbia; 3,616 (92%) reported travel to

In the past decade, arboviruses-arthropod-borne viruses-have been the focus of public health institutions worldwide following a spate of devastating outbreaks. Chikungunya virus, an arbovirus that belongs to the alphavirus genus, is a reemerging arthritogenic virus that has caused explosive outbreaks since 2006, notably on Réunion Island, and more recently in the Caribbean, South America, India, and Southeast Asia. The severity of arthritic disease caused by chikungunya virus has prompted public health authorities in affected countries to develop specific guidelines to tackle this pathogen. Ch

Several arboviruses are endemic to and co-circulate in Pakistan. In recent years, Pakistan has observed a rise in arboviral infections. A cross-sectional study for arboviral diseases, which included screening for Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), was initiated in 2015 to determine which pathogens were causing disease in patients presenting to health care services. Exposure to CHIKV was verified via detection of viral nucleic acids or virus-specific IgM with virus-specific neutralizing antibodies. Out of 997 enrolled patients presenting with clinical features suggestive of arboviral disease, 102 patie

BACKGROUND: The acute phase of chikungunya is well documented; less so are its long-term effects. This systematic literature review provides an overview of the currently available data.
METHODS: We performed an electronic search in PubMed/Medline and checked reference lists. We included studies in English on long-term sequelae of chikungunya in adults and on long-term sequelae of congenital infection from 2000 to 2016. Case reports, reviews and studies with a follow-up shorter than 6 weeks were excluded.
RESULTS: In total, 37 studies were included; with follow-up periods ranging from 1.5 to
