Ultralate cerebral potentials in a patient with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I indicate preserved C-fibre function.

Late and ultralate cerebral potentials in response to cutaneous heat (CO2 laser pulses) and electrical nerve stimuli were studied in a patient with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I who showed severe impairment of myelinated nerve fibre function. Cerebral potentials in response to electrical stimuli were absent (tibial nerve) or small (median nerve). With the laser pulses applied to the foot only ultralate, but no late potentials were observed, indicating intact C-fibres, but disturbed A delta-fibres. Laser stimulation of the hand resulted in both late and ultralate components, in

[A gait disorder caused by hereditary motor-sensory neuropathy].

Two sisters suffering from a hereditary motor-sensory neuropathy (HMSN) are described. A walking disturbance, deformations of foot, muscle atrophy, areflexia of the legs with disturbance of sensibility are detectable of them. Each of them, their motor nerve conduction velocity (NCV) of all extremities was slowed. The younger of the two sisters had graver symptoms and her sural nerve biopsy exhibited a reduced number of myelinated nerve fibres, some distinguished axon-calibre and onion bulb-formations. The relation of those findings to the classification of HMSN is demonstrated and the importan

[Stomatologic developmental abnormalities causing speech defects, their incidence in hereditary syndromes].

Inherited disturbances of development of the mouth and the surrounding oral environment: lips, tongue, teeth palate as well as lesion of the central motoric kernels of certain brain nerves may cause grave speech defects. In the report a number of hereditary syndromes are listed among the symptoms of which the speech defect has dominant significance. Short description is given of dental methods by means of which the defects can be eliminated or, at least, are curable.

[Gardner syndrome].

Three patients, sisters of B, 12 and 14 years of age with a diagnosis of Gardner's Syndrome are reported. The family history indicated that their mother died of a carcinoma of the intestine at the age of 30. This Syndrome, which is of dominant autosomic inheritance, can be seen in aur city, with so heterogeneous hereditary features. Dentists must know the oral cavity characteristics of this disease (odontomas, cementomas, cysts, supernumerary teeth) that accompany gastric, intestinal, skeletal and tissular disturbances an of other organs (polyps, osteomas, cysts, adenomas), being intestinal po

[Ulcero-mutilating acro-osteopathy in hereditary neuropathies. Differential diagnosis and pathogenesis].

Two patients, aged 51 and 70 years, had indolent ulcerations at the sole of the foot with destructive osteolysis in the bones of the feet, lesions characteristic of mutilating ulcerative acro-osteopathy. Patient 1, who had pes cavus, developed ulcerations on the balls of the feet along the second metatarsal bones, and patient 2 with pes equinovarus developed ulcers in the area of the calcaneus. Sock-like hypesthesia/hypalgesia from the toes to the ankles was present in both patients, and electrophysiological tests confirmed the presence of axonal sensory-motor neuropathy. Diabetes mellitus and

[Epidural anesthesia for a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, bronchial asthma and hypothyroidism].

The patient was a 75-year-old male with a history of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), bronchial asthma and hypothyroidism simultaneously. Epidural anesthesia was planned for the open reduction of a femur fracture. CMT is one of the hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies, and there may be no report in Japan that epidural anesthesia was applied to a patient with CMT. It has been suggested that neuromuscular disease is a contraindication to epidural anesthesia, but the patient had such a severe gait disturbance that he might not be able to walk by himself postoperatively without any aggravat

[Progressive ataxia and distal muscular atrophy--differential diagnostic considerations on Roussy-Lévy syndrome].

The Roussy-Lévy-Syndrome ist generally considered a pheno-typic variant of the hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I (HMSN I), i.e. the classic Charcot-Marie-Tooth-neuropathy, and is thus nosographically distinguishable from Friedreich's ataxia. While posterior column symptomatology, dementia and rapid progression are recognized as diagnostic criteria for Friedreich's ataxia and HMSN I is clinically defined by the typical features of a progressive polyneuropathy, the symptom triad "gait disturbance, areflexia and pes cavus" of the Roussy-Lévy-Syndrome has comparatively little diagnost

[Ballerina steps, symptom disclosing hypertrophic Charcot-Marie disease with dominant transmission. Value of electrophysiological studies].

Three children referred for electromyographic investigations presented difficulty in standing upright and in walking. They walked on the points of the feet. The disorder had appeared several years after the development of normal walking. Electrophysiological tests demonstrated a severe peripheral neuropathy with slowing of motor conduction in all four limbs and severe disturbances of sensory conduction. The purely peripheral nature of the lesion was confirmed by studying cortical somatesthetic potentials. E.M.G. and stimulus-detection examinations in family ascendants free from any clinical di

Thirteen-year-old boy with dentinogenesis imperfecta - pedodontic and orthodontic treatment.

Dentinogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary condition characterized by disturbance in tooth formation. The colour of the teeth vary from opalescent greyish-blue to an amber-like colour on the teeth with splitting of the enamel. On the roentgenogram the marked obliteration of the pulp chambers is a characteristic feature. This case report describe a 13-year-old boy with dentinogenesis imperfecta. High caries activity resulted in extensive caries on the first permanent molars. The boy had to be treated orthodontically to create acceptable occlusion. The treatment was carried out with fixed applian

[Cleido-cranial dysplasia. Contribution to study of this disease on the basis of four cases (author's transl)].

First described in 1898 under the name of cleido-cranial dysostosis by Pierre Marie and Sainton, this hereditary disease is highly polymorphous and progressive, hence the multiplicity of its manifestations. These involve not only the skull and clavicle, but also the hands, the spine and the teeth. In fact, it is disturbance of growth rather than a dysostosis in the strict sense of the term. Its mode of transmission is dominant. Its pathogenesis is totally unknown.

[Renal excretion of glycosaminoglycans under normal conditions and in several nervous system diseases in children].

The authors studied 101 children with diseases of the nervous system (with hereditary and acquired pathology) and 205 practically normal children. The urine excretion of specific components of the connective tissue (glycosaminoglycanes) was higher than in normals. Lesions of the connective tissue stroma in such forms of pathology is expressed not only in quantitative changes of glycosaminoglycane, but in their qualitative characteristics. Disturbances of the fractional compounds of glycosaminoglycane in the urine of patients differs from the parameters of chromatograms of normals by a high con

Uninherited dentinogenesis imperfecta.

The rare hereditary disease, dentinogenesis imperfecta, is a disturbance of dentin formation in both the deciduous and permanent dentitions. It may be associated with osteogenesis imperfecta, though it is probably that the two diseases are carried by different genes. This association was recognized in a 19-year-old man. Dentinogenesis imperfecta had been diagnosed at the age of 6 and had been regarded as a mutation; 11 years later, an atypical form of osteogenesis imperfecta developed. The case is atypical because of the apparent absence of dentinogenesis imperfecta in the patient's family. Th
