Function of Orofacial Stem Cells in Tooth Eruption: An Evolving Perspective.

Tooth eruption is closely linked to the normal development of dentition and proper establishment of occlusion. Disturbances in tooth eruption may affect oral physiological functions, facial contour and aesthetics; it is therefore important to understand the eruption process. This process is a complex biological event involving dynamic changes at the tissue and cellular levels. It is guided by anatomical structures as well as biological and molecular factors that result in the movement of the tooth to its final functional position in the oral cavity. Evidence increasingly suggests that stem cel

Epidemiological Profile of the Pathologies of the Oral Cavity in a Peruvian Population: A 9-Year Retrospective Study of 18,639 Patients.

AIM: To determine the epidemiological profile of oral diseases in a marginal urban Peruvian population. METHODS: A 9-year retrospective study was conducted, analysing 18,639 clinical records from the María Auxiliadora Hospital between 2006 and 2015 with diagnoses of oral lesions using ICD-10 criteria. Clinical records were analysed for sex, tumour, periapical abscess and sinus, cysts of the oral region, other lesions of the oral mucosa and cavity, gingivitis and periodontal disease, dentofacial anomalies, diseases of pulp, etc. RESULTS: Of 18,639 cases, the prevalence was higher in women for

Management of a Compound Odontoma in the Primary Dentition.

Odontomas are the most common benign odontogenic tumors of the oral cavity; however, their occurrence in the primary dentition is an extremely rare condition. When associated with primary teeth, odontomas may lead to disturbances in tooth eruption, which often requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on odontomas of the primary dentition and discuss the management of a compound odontoma in a pediatric patient.

Multidisciplinary management of a child with severe open bite and amelogenesis imperfecta.

AIM: To present a case of multidisciplinary management and fixed rehabilitation of a young girl with amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), a severe open bite and occlusal instability. BACKGROUND: AI is a genetic disorder characterized by enamel malformations, disturbances in tooth eruption and significant attrition. Early diagnosis is essential, since rapid breakdown of tooth structure may occur, giving rise to acute symptoms and complicated treatment. As AI is frequently accompanied by unesthetic appearance, open bite deformity and malocclusion, a multidisciplinary approach is often required. CASE

Compound odontoma in deciduous dentition.

Odontomas are benign tumors containing all the components of the odontogenic tissue. Disturbances in tooth eruption are one of the most common complications associated with odontomas. They are generally asymptomatic and are usually seen in second and third decades of life, rarely seen below 10 years of age. Herewith, we report an unusual occurrence of compound odontoma in a 4-year-old child visualized as a swelling of the cortical bone in the anterior maxilla.

The etiology of eruption disorders - further evidence of a 'genetic paradigm'.

The clinical spectrum of tooth eruption disorders includes both syndromic and non-syndromic problems ranging from delayed eruption to a complete failure of eruption. A defect in the differential apposition/resorption mechanism in alveolar bone can cause conditions such as tooth ankylosis, primary failure of eruption, failure of eruption due to inadequate arch length and canine impaction. As our knowledge of the molecular events underlying normal tooth eruption has increased, so too has our understanding of clinical eruption disorders. The recent finding that one gene, parathyroid hormone recep

A retrospective analysis of the characteristics, treatment and follow-up of 26 odontomas in Greek children.

Odontomas represent the most common type of odontogenic jaw tumors among patients younger than 20 years of age. Clinically, they are often associated with eruption failure of adjacent permanent teeth, and are classified as compound and complex. The aim of the present retrospective study was to present the characteristics, treatment approach and outcome of odontomas in Greek children, over a ten-year period. Twenty six patients, 2 to 14 years of age (mean 9.3 years), with odontomas treated during the years 1999-2008 at the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of a Children's Hospital, wer

Indications for digital volume tomography in orthodontics.

Disturbances in tooth eruption and tooth impactions make great demands on radiographic diagnostics. There is often need for radiographic images in various projections to assess the exact position of unerupted and impacted teeth. Digital volume tomography (DVT) is a method for localizing hard tissue structures such as bone and teeth on various planes. Moreover, it makes a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jaws and the viscerocranium possible. From an orthodontic point of view, digital volume tomography is indicated to detect impacted and ectopic teeth and to demonstrate the amount of bone a

Delayed tooth eruption: pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. A literature review.

Delayed tooth eruption (DTE) is the emergence of a tooth into the oral cavity at a time that deviates significantly from norms established for different races, ethnicities, and sexes. This article reviews the local and systemic conditions under which DTE has been reported to occur. The terminology related to disturbances in tooth eruption is also reviewed and clarified. A diagnostic algorithm is proposed to aid the clinician in the diagnosis and treatment planning of DTE. The sequential and timely eruption of teeth is critical to the timing of treatment and the selection of an orthodontic trea

Hereditary and environmental dental findings in identification of human remains.

The paper presents the results on hereditary and environmental dental findings in identification of human remains exhumed from mass graves in the Republic of Croatia. The total of 17,880 teeth from all the categories (incisors, canines, premolars and molars) was examined. Hereditary findings of the teeth such as shape, size, position, as well as age were used in all of the cases confirming and completing the identification. In only 15% of the cases they were the starting points for the identification that would be later confirmed with another 3-5 traditional identification procedures. Disturba

Tooth anomalies associated with failure of eruption of first and second permanent molars.

The occurrence of tooth anomalies in association with failure of the first and second molars to erupt was assessed in a sample of 1520 nonsyndromic subjects with uncrowded dental arches (mean age, 14 years 4 months) and compared with the prevalence rate calculated in a matched control group of 1000 subjects. The tooth anomalies examined included infraocclusion of deciduous molars, palatal displacement of maxillary canines, rotation of maxillary lateral incisors, aplasia of second premolars, and small size of maxillary lateral incisors. Associations among arrested eruption of first and second p

Nature and frequency of dental changes in idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Eleven patients with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism were examined orally and medically. All patients had a history of tetanic and/or epileptic manifestations. Correspondingly, disturbances in the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus had been present in all. Dental anomalies were demonstrated in all patients but one. Enamel hypoplasia was observed in six cases, disturbances in tooth eruption in eight, root defects in five and hypodontia in seven. Dental anomalies were more frequent than could be expected from the literature, probably because the dental aspects of hyp

[Appearance and diagnosis of odontomas].

Odontomata are relatively seldom encountered. The diagnosis is made accidentally or from abnormal findings such as persistance of a milk tooth, disturbances in tooth eruption, diastema and others. Localisation is established by X-ray.
