Ehlers Danlos syndrome type I with novel dental features.

The clinical, radiographic and histologic findings are described in two cases of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Type I with novel dental features. Defective dentinogenesis principally affecting the mandibular incisors result in aplasia or hypoplasia of root development predisposing to localized periodontal disease. A striking radiographic appearance with a bulbous enlargement of the roots together with pulp stones is seen in other teeth. 'Giant channels' and vascular inclusions resembling 'intermediate cementum' are prominent within this area. No evidence of Type III procollagen or collagen was detect

[Polyneuritis, polyradiculoneuritis, polyneuropathies: development of a concept].

The concept of polyneuritis, polyradiculoneuritis and polyneuropathy has changed considerably since the last century. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease has been dismembered into hypertrophic, neuronal and spinal forms. Within the group of hereditary sensory neuropathies, to Thévenard's ulcero-multilating acropathy have been added recessive forms of early onset and various types of congenital analgesia. Other hereditary polyneuropathies result from inborn errors of metabolism; in adults, these are chiefly Refsum disease, Fabry's disease, porphyria, amyloidosis and adrenoleucodystrophy. Orthodontic abnormalities in patients with eating disorders.

Many anorexic and bulimic patients induce vomiting by inserting their fingers in the oral cavity. We hypothesized that finger pressure could lead to tooth movement, eventually resulting in the development of orthodontic abnormalities, particularly open-bite. Twenty-four females with eating disorders and 24 matched controls underwent orthodontic examination and completed a dental questionnaire. Orthodontic abnormalities were more commonly found in the eating disorder group and open-bite was the most common abnormality seen. The presence of open-bite or other orthodontic abnormality was not asso

Delayed motor development in relation to nutritional status among children under two years of age in two districts of Simbu Province.

The median ages of attainment of independent sitting, crawling, standing and walking were investigated in relation to nutritional status in 866 children aged under 24 months in Gumine District and 270 children in the same age range in Karimui District of Simbu Province. Sitting ability in these children was found to be comparable to western children of the same age but subsequent development was delayed in relation to western standards. This is particularly the case for Karimui children, who are almost 18 months old before they walk independently. Growth retardation, particularly the manifesta

Dental disease and health behaviour: the development of an interactional model.

This paper describes the development of an interactional model in which both the clinical and the socio-psychological aspects of dental disease and its prevention are considered. Clinical and social data were collected from two separate samples, and the interrelationships between antecedent, motivational and preventive health behaviour variables and their influences on each other and on dental health outcomes were measured by regression analyses. A complex pattern of significant interrelationships was revealed, in which direct and indirect influences on dental health and behaviour operated at

The severity of dental fluorosis in children exposed to water with a high fluoride content for various periods of time.

Inhabitants of the Ikeno district of Japan were accidentally exposed to drinking water containing 7.8 ppm fluoride (F) for 12 years, after which water with 0.2 ppm F was substituted. Dental examinations of local inhabitants revealed that only children aged seven years or less at the introduction or aged 11 months or more at the removal of the high-F water had fluorosis. Regular inspections were made of the 86 children between those age limits. The severity of fluorosis in three tooth types (first permanent molars, upper central incisors, and first premolars) was assessed and related to the per

Structural abnormalities of the craniofacial complex and congenital malformations.

This article was meant to be a very cursory survey of the multiple defects that abnormal development can produce in all areas of the craniofacial complex. Careful examination for these abnormalities should lead the clinician to earlier referral of patients for additional examination by a genetics team. This often enables more focused care for the individual and better counseling concerning future pregnancies. Aase points out that "funny looking face" or "syndromic facies" is no longer helpful. Accurate assessment of the face with measurement leads to better diagnosis and ultimately better pati

The effect of neuromuscular diseases on the development of dental and occlusal characteristics.

Fourteen patients suffering from primary muscular disease (myopathies), including seven with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, were compared to 11 patients whose neuromuscular disorders were of neuropathic origin. Mesioclusion was observed only in the group with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. Posterior crossbite, anterior open bite, mouth breathing, and large tongue were also more prevalent in the group with myopathies, especially the Duchenne's patients, than they were in the group with neurogenic disorders. The Duchenne's patients exhibited a statistically significant delay in dental emergence,

The role of functional occlusal relationships in temporomandibular disorders: a review.

This review highlights the consensus existing in past research on the role of functional occlusal factors in the pathophysiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The functional occlusal relationships considered are balancing and working occlusal contacts, length and symmetry of retruded contact position-intercuspal position (RCP-ICP) slides, occlusal guidance patterns, parafunction, and dental attrition. Controlled studies fail to demonstrate any association between occlusal interferences and TMD signs or symptoms. Temporomandibular joint condylar autorepositioning secondary to intracapsu

Dental radiology and oral pathology.

This article represents an overview of normal and pathological findings of the oral structures for the practicing radiologist. Some of the disease processes discussed are of dental etiology, whereas others are manifestations of systemic diseases. Normal tooth development is described followed by an overview of radiolucent, radiopaque, and mixed lucent-opaque lesions. In the radiolucent category, normal anatomical landmarks of the jaws include the mental foramen, manidbular canal, incisive canal and maxillary sinuses. Other lucencies that represent normal structures or variations include develo

Metabolism and effects of epidermal growth factor and related growth factors in mammals.

The initial observations of Stanley Cohen in the 1960s established that EGF induced in vivo effects such as precocious eyelid opening and tooth eruption. Subsequently the actions of EGF have been extensively explored in cell culture systems. The receptor for EGF was characterized as a prototype model for other growth factors and the now extensive in vitro data indicate multiple functions for EGF. Moreover, EGF and EGF receptors have been characterized in many tissues, and EGF has been identified in most body fluids of several mammalian species. Interestingly, neither EGF antibody administratio

Conserved loci on the X chromosome confer phosphate homeostasis in mice and humans.

Several genes expressed in kidney and other tissues determine phosphate homeostasis in extracellular fluid. The major form of inherited hypophosphatemia in humans involves an X-linked locus (HPDR, Xp22.31-p21.3). It has two murine homologues (Hyp and Gy) which map to closely-linked but separate loci (crossover value 0.4%-0.8%). Both murine mutations impair Na(+)-phosphate cotransport in renal brush border membrane; an associated renal disorder of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D) metabolism has been characterized in Hyp mice. Whereas experiments with cultured Hyp renal epithelium indicate

Anterior open bite treatment with magnets.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of repelling magnets on the treatment of anterior open bite and compare them with the effects of acrylic posterior bite-blocks. Twenty patients, aged 9-16 years with skeletal anterior open bite, were randomly divided into two groups. In one group the patients wore posterior repelling magnet splints and in the other they wore acrylic posterior bite-blocks of the same thickness as the magnet splints. The patients were instructed to use their appliance as much as possible (the minimum accepted being 18 hours daily) during a 6-month period. Dental c

Periodontitis and angular alveolar lesions: a critical distinction.

Modern anthropologic and epidemiologic studies reveal that the incidence of periodontitis is low in both ancient and modern populations. The distribution of plaque and gingivitis has little or no correlation with the distribution of pathologic alveolar bone loss or with periodontitis. The assumption that a distance from cementoenamel junction to alveolar crest (CEJ-AC distance) greater than 2 mm equates with disease overlooks the interrelationship between the CEJ-AC distance and continuous eruption in compensation for tooth wear and growth of the lower face height. [Dental study of hypophosphatasic child].

Hypophosphatasia is a hereditary disease characterized by congenital deficiency of tissue alkaline phosphatase. One of its dental features is the shedding of teeth. We have experienced a case which was referred to our clinic with the chief complaints of loss and shedding of lower deciduous central incisors and was diagnosed to be highly suspected of hypophosphatasia as a result of hematological examination at the pediatric clinic. As a result of close systemic and dental examination and further study of changes in the course for two and a half years, the following findings were obtained: 1. Lo

Developmental enamel defects in primary teeth in children with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, or hearing defects: a review.

Developmental enamel defects in primary teeth have been found at least twice as frequently in children with cerebral palsy or mental retardation as in control children, and frequently also in children with sensori-neural hearing deficits. The developing tooth germ is sensitive to a range of systemic disturbances, some of which may also affect neurologic development. Because the enamel cannot recover once it is damaged, it may provide a repository of information on the timing and nature of insults potentially affecting other ectodermally derived structures, including the brain. Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome. Ultrastructural study and successful treatment with acitretin.

Four siblings affected by Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) ranged in age from 2 to 11 years. The parents were unaffected and parental consanguinity was present. The 2-year-old girl showed the early manifestations of PLS; that is, slight gingival swelling and erythema occurring simultaneously with minimal scaling of palms and soles. The other siblings, aged 5, 8, and 11 years, showed severe periodontopathy with tooth loss and marked palmoplantar keratoderma with a centripetal extension of the keratoses to the limbs and trunk. These three older siblings were treated with acitretin (Ro 10-1670), t

Development of periodontal disease in a single flock of sheep: clinical signs, morphology of subgingival plaque and influence of antimicrobial agents.

The clinical development of broken mouth over a single reproductive year and the effect of two broad spectrum antibacterial agents upon it was followed in 72 Scottish Blackface ewes aged between two and three years. Using a number of dental health indices especially developed for the purpose, the amount of gingivitis, tooth movement, gum recession and pocketing were quantified and graphed for both the whole population and each group in the drug trial. All clinical features except movement fluctuated significantly with time, the fluctuations often being associated with nutritional or other envi

Improvement of dental development in osteopetrotic mice by maternal vitamin D3 sulfate administration.

Utilizing the microphthalamic mouse, (mi/mi) as a model of osteopetrosis, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) was administered prenatally and postnatally to study its effects on tooth development and subsequent eruption. It has previously been reported that vitamin D3 crosses the placental barrier and is absorbed into mammary gland milk. Fifteen heterozygotes (+/mi) were used as breeders. There were three study groups: A) 5.0 ng/gm cholecalciferol sulfate; B) 2.5 ng/gm cholecalciferol sulfate; and C) no therapy. Intraperitoneal injections were administered three times per week, beginning when pregnan

Dental and occlusal characteristics of children with neuromuscular disease.

Seventy-nine pediatric patients with neuromuscular diseases were examined for dental and occlusal characteristics. Fifty-six patients suffered from primary muscle disease (myopathies) including 43 with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. The neuromuscular disorders in 19 patients were of neuropathic origin, while four were caused by a fault in the neuromuscular junction. Posterior crossbites occurred more often in the myopathies (57%) as compared with the neurogenic dystrophies (14%) (P less than 0.003). Although not statistically significant, the prevalence of open bite was also higher in the comb
