Three new species, Eubacterium nodatum, Eubacterium timidum, and Eubacterium brachy, were described, primarily from subgingival samples taken from patients with moderate and severe adult periodontitis. Except for the isolation of E. brachy from a pleuropulmonary infection, these species have not been reported from other infected body sites. We report on the isolation of these species and an undescribed group (D-6) of asaccharolytic eubacteria also found in periodontal disease from numerous different sites of infection, mostly the head and neck. A similarity in cellular morphological properties

Several studies have indicated that the combination of metronidazole and spiramycin is synergistic against anaerobic bacteria and may be effective against oral infections. The present study sought to determine the efficacy and safety of a commercial preparation of these two antibiotics (Rodogyl) when used adjunctively in the treatment of advanced periodontal disease. In a double-blind parallel randomized trial, 56 patients (mean age = 44 years) with advanced periodontitis (50 of whom completed the study) were assigned to either the Rodogyl or placebo group. Both groups were thoroughly scaled a

In all, 125 individuals, 13-23 years old, with intact dentitions and 163 individuals, 13-20 years old, with dental fillings were included in a series of studies. The results of the studies suggest that subjects with intact dentitions have a lower prevalence and degree of signs and symptoms of mandibular dysfunction than subjects with restorations in the teeth. However, most signs and symptoms in both groups were mild and infrequent. The most common symptoms in both groups were TMJ-sounds, tiredness during chewing, and headache, and the most common clinical signs were TMJ-sounds and muscles ten

Epidermal nevus syndrome is defined as a combination of nevoid skin alterations, epileptic seizures, and psychomotoric retardation. Involvement of other organs, especially the eyes, may also occur, but is not obligatory. The present report is concerned with a case that combined regional odontodysplasia with nevoid skin alterations in the overlying skin area of the face. This observation suggests that odontodysplasia may be the result of aberrations in the development and migration of cells of the neural crest occurring early in embryonic life.

A review of the literature reveals a need to clarify the pathologic physiology of congenital polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) poisoning, which is characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, brown staining of the skin and mucous membranes, as in Addison's disease, natal teeth, widely open fontanelles and sagittal suture and apparent overgrowth of the gingiva. The skull abnormalities may represent irregular calcification, with natal teeth appearing because the bone of the mandible is penetrated more easily than usual. Some fetuses were poisoned at the time the mothers ingested the oil; other

Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent health problems in the world and is the major cause of tooth loss in the adult population. Its two major subdivisions are gingivitis where disease is confined to the gingiva, and periodontitis where disease is present both in the gingiva and the supporting periodontal tissues. During the first stage there is a vasculitis of vessels subjacent to the junctional epithelium which is followed by exudation of fluid from the gingival sulcus and migration of leukocytes. There is variable expression of this stage throughout the mouth with new areas of in

Research into the use of fluorides is dynamic and ongoing. As a consequence, anyone interested in clinical application must be up to date in the current literature. A number of other trace elements have also been found to have impact, particularly on the disease of dental caries. Therefore, to treat oral disease effectively with these products, it is important that the clinician keep current with published studies. Fluorides are, at present, a major therapeutic measure in the treatment of both dental caries and periodontal disease. However, fluorides will only reduce disease, not eliminate it.

Modern periodontal therapy is based on the fundamental realization that accumulation of bacterial plaque at the gingival margin causes the incipient lesion in periodontal disease. Without interference, most lesions will progress to involve deeper parts of the periodontium. Recent research has revealed that dental plaque comprises a multitude of bacteria in various combinations with a variety of pathogenic potentials, that supragingival plaque is significantly different from the subgingival variety and that particular bacterial species are associated with different periodontal disease states. Juveniles and adults from a prehistoric Amerindian skeletal series from Tennessee are compared for differences in the means and variances of the buccolingual dimensions of their permanent teeth. While there are no significant differences in variance, it is found that juveniles exhibit significantly smaller mandibular canines, first premolars, and first molars. The results are similar to those of a previous examination of an Amerindian skeletal collection from South Dakota. There is evidence to suggest that teeth may fail to develop to their maximum genetic size potential when there is interfer

A family with characteristics that have striking similarities to the syndrome of familial osteodysplasia is reported. The inheritance pattern appears to be autosomal dominant. The typical facies has a lack of vertical facial development and a functional prognathism caused by overclosure of the mandible and opening of the gonial angle. Midfacial hypoplasia and a pointed chin are characteristic. Alveolar and sutural bone growth in the face is diminished and associated with partial dental agenesis. Variable cranial digital markings and possible synostosis are also seen. These typical facial chang

The treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta varies with the age of the patients and the severity of disease. Patients with mild disease rarely develop significant deformities; therefore, the care required is mainly limited to periodic fractures or to associated problems, such as erosion of the teeth, decreased hearing, and difficulties in adjustment. It is the patient with severe disease who often requires an unusual amount of attention. Regardless of the immediate problem, the treatment program should be geared toward the long-term function of the patient; in most cases this will be best served

Epidemiological studies have shown that the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease and tooth loss increase with age. Other studies indicate that gingival recession becomes more prevalent as age progresses. In addition, it has been demonstrated experimentally that elderly individuals develop more rapid and severe gingivitis than young individuals following the abstention of oral hygiene. However, to date no one has established which changes associated with ageing are responsible for these clinical observations. A population of elderly patients (60 years or older) has been evaluated at N

A case report is presented of a patient in whom nearly all teeth of the permanent dentition still present had short roots, while some teeth had never been formed at all. It may be concluded from the typical differences in length between the roots of the various teeth that this condition must be due to complete cessation of the growth of the teeth at the age of 7 or 8 years. Since the patient suffered a fulminant attack of erythema multiforme (STEVENS-JOHNSON syndrome) at this age, and since no other possible explanation of the short roots has been found, it is concluded that this clinical cond

Dental disease is frequently accompanied by anxiety and fear of the treatment and of dentists. The etiology of any anxiety is sought in early conditioning life experiences; here it may be related to infants' responses to first teething. The universality of dental anxiety makes it a paradigm of psychosomatic disorders. These are conceptualized as pathologic exaggerated reactions to early traumatizing events, a causality not unlike that of conversive-hysteric symptoms or "normal" bodily characteristics. Psychiatric-etiologic considerations of dental anxiety are not to be found in the literature.

The paper is concerned with a description of an atypical clinical picture of Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuronal amyotrophy in 2 eight-year old monozygotic twins. The traits of the disease were characterized by a deformation of the feet, mild cerebellar symptoms, development of ptosis and other myopathical symptoms, an enlargement of the transversal nerve of the neck and a distribution of the process to the proximal parts. The diagnosis was confirmed by EMG studies. The authors detected a large amount of abortive signs in many members of the family both along the mothers, as well as fathers line. Thi

Dysgnathia (jaw and tooth anomaly, tooth misspacing, macillodento-facial anomaly) influences to a certain degree the development of defects of articulation especially sigmatism. Other factors, such as mild motor system inco-ordination and hearing defects, besides dysgnathia, are frequently observed. Speech therapy is necessary preceding as well as together with the maxillofacial treatment. The dental, prosthodontic and maxillofacial prostheses may likewise interfere with enunciation, but this will disappear spontaneously within 2 weeks or will be compensated for. If necessary the prosthesis wi

The transseptal fibers appear to develop independently in adjacent teeth and course toward each other meeting at the midline. Correction of rotations should be accomplished if possible before the teeth are in clinical occlusion. The thickness of the band of transeptal fibers depends on the anatomy of the interproximal space. The fibers are not continuous but interlace at the midline. In disease the transseptal fibers are destroyed first at the midline and appear to reorganize at that point. A thick fiber bundle was demonstrated to run buccolingually in the interdental space which served to con

The authors present a form of heredodegenerative spinocerebellar ataxia with concomitant involvement of ectodermal structures, different from other variants. The disease was characterized by spinocerebellar ataxia (the complete form); curly, thin, short and dense hair, mikroskopically monilethrix; a characteristic face (hypertelorism, flattened and wide base of the nose, prominent nostrils, large mouth, thick lips); and abnormal teeth which were reduced in number and had gaps inbetween. The psycho intellectual development and the voice of the patient were normal. The first neurological symptom

Many inherited disorders have oral manifestations which can be detected on dental radiographs as alterations in the morphology or chemical composition of the teeth. Thus the dentist may be the first to detect disorders of development and metabolism of importance to the general health of the patient and his family. In one group of conditions the pulp chamber is larger than normal. This may be associated with taurodontism in such conditions as polyploidy of the -X chromosome and trisomy-21 or Down's syndrome. Taurodontism also occurs in a variety of other syndromes including the tricho-dento-oss

The development of teeth, salivary glands, and other oral tissues can be seriously compromised by a deficiency of a number of essential nutrients. Because nutritional stress during critical development periods may decrease the ultimate resistance of the oral tissues to challenge, the prevention of disease and maintenance of oral health are intimately dependent on the nutrient supply during development. Appropriate dietary counseling, particularly with reference to critical developmental times and intake of essential nutrients, can insure optimal oral tissue development.
