Invasive guests: the role of non-oral bacteria in oral dysbiosis and systemic health.

BACKGROUND: The human oral cavity harbors a diverse microbiota essential for maintaining oral and systemic health. While most resident microorganisms are commensals adapted to specific oral niches, increasing evidence highlights the presence of non-oral bacteria, including Helicobacter pylori, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridioides difficile. Traditionally associated with other body sites, these bacteria may enter the oral cavity and, under favorable ecological conditions, persi

Interaction of hydrolysable tannins with Streptococcus mutans lipid liposomes.

Streptococcus mutans is one of the main pathogens responsible for dental caries, necessitating an urgent search for new effective strategies against this bacterium. Hydrolysable tannins, including 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-β-d-glucose (PGG), 1,2-di-O-galloyl-4,6-valoneoyl-β-d-glucose (dGVG), and 2-O-bis-digalloyl-4,6-valoneoyl-β-d-glucose (b-dGVG), exhibit antibacterial activity against S. mutans but their direct molecular interactions with bacterial lipids remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the binding mechanism of these tannins to liposomes prepared from lipids isolated directly

Effects of a silver nanoparticle and fluoride solution on enamel remineralization: an in situ study.

This in situ study evaluated the remineralizing effect of a silver nanoparticle and fluoride solution (NanoF) compared with silver diamine fluoride (SDF) on dental enamel with initial caries lesions. This blind, randomized, crossover in situ study was conducted in two experimental phases (10 days each), separated by a 10-day washout period. Eighteen volunteers (n = 18) used palatal devices containing six bovine enamel blocks: one sound enamel (SE), one initial caries lesion (IC), two treated with NanoF, and two treated with SDF. Initial caries lesions were formed in situ before treatment, and

Oral Candida colonisation and cariogenic bacteria in children and adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) face a disproportionate cariogenic burden, yet the role of oral Candida and its partnership with cariogenic bacteria remains poorly quantified. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesised observational evidence on oral Candida colonisation, cariogenic bacterial carriage, and clinical caries outcomes in non-syndromic CL/P, with GRADE-rated certainty. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 and the Cochrane Handbook (PROSPERO CRD420261402624), six databases were searched from inception to 27 May 2026. Eligible studies were observational desi

Mycobacterium mageritense submandibular lymphadenitis in children: diagnostic challenges and the role of metagenomic next-generation sequencing: two case reports and literature review.

Mycobacterium mageritense is an extremely rare, rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM). Pediatric cases are rarely reported worldwide, and the non-specific clinical manifestations, low sensitivity of conventional microbiological tests, and limited specimen volume from children often lead to diagnostic delays. We describe the clinical data of two immunocompetent children with submandibular lymphadenitis caused by Mycobacterium mageritense, both diagnosed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). We also systematically reviewed the relevant literature and performed a pooled a

Adverse oral effects of GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and dual incretin receptor agonists such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) are increasingly being prescribed for type 2 diabetes and obesity due to their efficacy in glycaemic control, weight loss and cardiovascular risk reduction. Emerging pharmacovigilance data suggest potential oral adverse effects, including xerostomia, dysgeusia, oral hypoesthesia and throat discomfort. Therefore, alterations in salivary function may compromise oral homeostasis and increase susceptibility

Mass Spectrometry-Based Oral Meta-Omics Analysis-What We Know and What We Don't.

According to the World Health Organization, dental caries and periodontal disease are the most prevalent oral health conditions worldwide, usually linked with oral microbiome dysbiosis. It is assumed that oral microbiota alterations are also associated with immune challenges, beyond the oral cavity, thus having implications in the progression of various systemic diseases, but the mechanism by which the plaque biofilm microbiota contributes to the development of such diseases is not entirely clear. In this context, metaproteomics and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics can reveal essential inf

CBCT features of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia with coexisting lesions at different maturation stages: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FLCOD) is a begin fibro-osseous lesion occurring in the tooth-bearing regions of the jaws and is characterized by replacement of normal bone with fibrous connective tissue and cementum-like mineralized material. Most patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally during radiographic examinations, and the condition may be misdiagnosed because of overlapping imaging features with other jaw lesions. Because the disease is usually asymptomatic and exhibits imaging features that overlap with those of several odontogenic and inflammatory lesion
