Oral findings in pediatric patients with allergic rhinitis and asthma: a cohort study of an Italian setting.

Allergic rhinitis and asthma are two frequent respiratory clinical entities commonly encountered in pediatric clinical settings. Previous studies have evaluated the influence of these two conditions on oral health, but conflicting results have been obtained. The present cohort study aimed to record oral findings (i.e., caries, plaque, gingival inflammation and mouth breathing) in 50 pediatric patients diagnosed with allergic rhinitis and/or asthma in an Italian pediatric setting and to compare them to a control group of 50 healthy children. The following oral indexes were calculated: Periodont

Prospective associations between ADHD symptoms and physical conditions from early childhood to adolescence: a population-based longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and physical conditions is frequent but often goes unrecognised. Most available evidence on the links between ADHD and physical conditions relies on cross-sectional studies. Understanding temporal sequences of associations is key to inform appropriate treatment and preventive strategies. We aimed to assess possible longitudinal associations between ADHD symptoms and a broad range of physical conditions, adjusting for several confounding factors. METHODS: Participants came from the population-based Quebec Lon

[Child oral health: A plea for interdisciplinarity].

A child’s oral health has major implications both for their general health and for their quality of life. Even before birth, the mother’s oral health can affect the development of the baby and pregnancy outcomes. From the very first months of life, feeding habits together with non-nutritive sucking ones, early transmission of pathogenic bacteria, and oral hygiene practices prefigure the child’s future health. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of our current knowledge regarding the main oral health issues affecting children, namely dental caries, erosive tooth wear,

Caesarean-section delivery and caries risk of 3-year-old Chinese children: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Caesarean-section (C-section) may influence children's long-term health by affecting bacterial colonization. However, few studies have focused on the association between C-section delivery (CSD) and dental caries, and previous conclusions have been conflicting. This study aimed to explore whether CSD would increase the risk of early childhood caries (ECC) in preschool children in China. METHODS: This study was a retrospective cohort study. Three-year-old children with full primary dentition were included through the medical records system. Children in the nonexposure group were va

Successful complete oral rehabilitation of a patient with osteopetrosis with extensive pre-treatments, bone grafts, dental implants and fixed bridges: a multidisciplinary case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteopetrosis comprises a group of inherited disorders that are rare and result in abnormal bone structure. Bone remodeling is extremely inhibited because osteoclasts are nonfunctional or lacking. This condition causes overgrowth of bone with disappearance of the bone marrow, leading to aplastic anemia; obstruction of nerve passages in the skull leads to blindness and often hearing impairment. In most cases, osteopetrosis results in oral complications such as tooth deformation, hypomineralization, and delayed or absent tooth eruption. The only curative treatment is hematopoietic st

Update of the molar incisor hypomineralization: Würzburg concept.

PURPOSE: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is playing an increasingly important role in dental practice. MIH is defined as hypomineralization of systemic origin of one to four permanent first molars, often associated with affected incisors. Affected teeth are more susceptible to caries and post-eruptive enamel loss and should be diagnosed and treated as early as possible. In 2016, the Würzburg concept was developed for German-speaking countries including a classification index-the MIH Treatment Need Index (MIH-TNI)-and a treatment plan based on it for the use in daily practice. In the mea

Porphyromonas gingivalis infection in the oral cavity is associated with elevated galactose-deficient IgA1 and increased nephritis severity in IgA nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the major periodontal bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN)-particularly with respect to galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1)-has not been fully elucidated. METHODS: Saliva samples from 30 IgAN patients and 44 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were subjected to analysis of P. gingivalis status via polymerase chain reaction using a set of P. gingivalis-specific primers. The associations between P. gingivalis presence and clinical parameters, including plasma Gd-IgA1, were analyzed in each group. RESULTS:

Comprehensive Preventive and Therapeutic Oral Health Care: A Case Report of Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IV A in a Pediatric Patient.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is a metabolic disorder resulting from a deficiency of lysosomal enzymes. It is an autosomal recessive disorder with similar incidences in men and women. Mucopolysaccharidosis type IV A is caused by a deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase, which deficiency is, in turn, caused by alterations in the GALNS gene. It is marked by a short stature, a pigeon chest, frontal bossing, kyphosis, and a flat nasal bridge. Intraorally, macroglossia, hypodontia, dentinogenesis imperfecta, a broad mouth, and an anterior open bite are some of the common features. The presen
