OBJECTIVES: Demineralized root dentin and cementum is made up of mostly collagen that shrinks significantly upon dehydration or drying with air. During remineralization mineral is deposited on the outside of the lesion creating a highly mineralized surface layer that inhibits diffusion, arrests the lesion and prevents shrinkage. Previous studies suggest that active root caries lesions manifest shrinkage, while arrested lesions no longer manifest shrinkage upon dehydration. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the shrinkage of root caries lesions can be monitored during dehydration

INTRODUCTION: The circumferential 2 mm ferrule during the fabrication of the crown is strongly advocated for the long-term clinical success. During the routine clinical practice, the dentist encounters the endodontically treated tooth (ETT) with inadequacy of the ferrule in some segment due to caries, abrasion, and erosions. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the consequence of inadequate segmental ferrule location on fracture strength of the root canal-treated anterior and posterior teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty each maxillary canine and mandibular premolar intact human

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy, neoplasms, and their complications linked to malabsorption, malnutrition, and metabolic disorders may lead to improper tooth development and frequent severe caries in patients during/after antineoplastic treatment and to a more frequent improper tooth development in patients undergoing chemotherapy during odontogenesis. However, the causes of these abnormalities remain unknown; there are no studies on the impact of antineoplastic treatment and its complications on the chemical composition of mineralised teeth.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To compare the chemical composition o

This in vitro study evaluated the marginal microleakage of a bioactive restorative with other restorative materials in standard Class V preparations. Sixty previously extracted, noncarious human molars were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups (n = 20): a bioactive composite resin, a universal hybrid composite resin, and a resin-modified glass ionomer restorative. Class V cavities were prepared on the facial or lingual surface of each tooth so that coronal margins were located in enamel and apical margins in cementum (dentin). After the cavity preparations were restored with the appropri

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of radiographic densitometry in detecting the early demineralization of human enamel and cementum in irradiated and non-irradiated teeth. Sixty extracted teeth were divided into two groups: irradiated group and non-irradiated group. After irradiation, the groups were subjected to demineralization-remineralization (PH) cycling. Radiographic densitometric measurements (gray values) of a selected area of interest in the enamel and in the cementum of each tooth were performed at baseline and after PH cycling. After PH cycling, there was a signi

Marchiafava Bignami disease (MBD) is a neurological disorder characterized by myelin degeneration and tissue necrosis within the central nervous system. This condition predominantly afflicts individuals with chronic alcohol abuse and malnutrition. The most distinctive pathological feature of MBD is the necrotic degeneration specifically observed in the corpus callosum; however, emerging evidence also indicates the potential involvement of other brain regions. The main pathophysiological mechanisms involve alcohol consumption, which leads to thiamine depletion and disrupts various metabolic pat

Environment parameters, diet and genetic factors interact to shape tooth morphostructure. In the human lineage, archaic and modern hominins show differences in dental traits, including enamel thickness, but variability also exists among living populations. Several polymorphisms, in particular in the non-collagenous extracellular matrix proteins of the tooth hard tissues, like enamelin, are involved in dental structure variation and defects and may be associated with dental disorders or susceptibility to caries. To gain insights into the relationships between tooth protein polymorphisms and den

Variations in organic and inorganic composition and morphology may determine different susceptibilities of root surfaces to caries. Subsequent to gingival recession, root surfaces become exposed and those areas where Sharpey's fibers system was once inserted into the cementum are converted into canals for microbial penetration. In the presence of a cariogenic root biofilm, the fermentable carbohydrate from diet is converted into organic acid, and the root caries lesion is initiated in the exposed root site. We will revisit here the structural, biochemical, and histopathological specificities o

Similar to coronal caries, root caries results from a disequilibrium of the de-remineralization balance in favor of the demineralization process. It mainly involves a bacterial shift in favor of an increase in the proportion of acidogenic and aciduric bacteria. This process permanently damages the dental mineralized tissues, namely the dental cementum and dentin. In addition to the demineralization and exposure of the dentin or the cementum organic matrix, acid production by cariogenic bacteria induces the activation of endogenous (host-derived) enzymes within the dentin and saliva. These enzy

Root surfaces, which with increasing age become exposed to dental biofilms, will react to the intermittent pH fluctuations at the interface between the biofilm and the cementum/dentin surface. If dental biofilm is left undisturbed in stagnation sites in the dentition, the underlying mineral surfaces may gradually develop dental caries characterized by a subsurface loss of mineral. In root surfaces, the demineralization is accompanied by microbial invasion of the cementum and dentin resulting in a pulpo-dentinal defense reaction. Most lesions progress slowly and experimental in situ studies as

Dental caries, the most prevalent oral disease in dental patients, involves the phases of demineralization and destruction of tooth hard tissues like enamel, dentin, and cementum. Dentin is a major component of the root and is also the innermost layer that protects the tooth nerve, exposure of which results in pain. In this study, we used human stem cells from apical papilla (hSCAP), which are early progenitor cells, to examine the effects of recombinant human plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (rhPAI-1) on odontogenic differentiation in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrated that rhPAI-1 promoted

BACKGROUND: Aging population will lead to the increase of incidence of root caries globally. The clinical management of root caries is challenging due to the difficulty in moisture isolation. The root caries is caused by the release of organic acids from cariogenic bacteria which results in the dissolution of cementum and dentin of the root. The purpose of this study is to study the efficacy of modified saturated calcium phosphate solution (CaP) supplement with zinc (Zn(2+)) and/or fluoride (F(-)) in providing root cementum surfaces less susceptible to acid dissolution and bacterial colonizati
