Cellular and Molecular Pathways Leading to External Root Resorption.

External apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment implicates specific molecular pathways that orchestrate nonphysiologic cellular activation. To date, a substantial number of in vitro and in vivo molecular, genomic, and proteomic studies have supplied data that provide new insights into root resorption. Recent mechanisms and developments reviewed here include the role of the cellular component-specifically, the balance of CD68+, iNOS+ M1- and CD68+, CD163+ M2-like macrophages associated with root resorption and root surface repair processes linked to the expression of the M1-associa

Preservation of root cementum: a comparative evaluation of power-driven versus hand instruments.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of three distinct periodontal treatment methods in comparison with hand instrumentation on residual cementum of periodontal diseased teeth. Cementum can influence the activities of periodontal cells and may play an important regulatory role in periodontal treatment. The ideal method for periodontal therapy involves removal of biofilm, calculus and endotoxin while preserving root cementum. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight caries free, single-rooted teeth in patients diagnosed with severe chronic periodontitis were treated using

Drugs that promote dental caries.

Dental caries result from erosion of tooth enamel or cementum by acidic substances produced by bacteria found in dental plaque. Caries can lead to pulp necrosis and tooth loss. Risk factors include certain dietary habits, poor oral hygiene, and dry mouth. Diabetes and Sjogren's syndrome can also promote dental caries. Psychotropic substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and cannabis can promote dental caries. Many medicinal drugs facilitate the formation of dental caries, through various mechanisms; they include formulations with a high sugar content; drugs that cause dry mouth (es

Evaluation of the influence of three different temperatures on microleakage of two self-etch and one total-etch adhesives.

AIM: To evaluate the bonding temperature effect on dentin-restoration microleakage. The null hypothesis of the study is that the score of microleakage is identical among different adhesive bondings at different temperatures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety caries free maxillary premolars were selected. Class V cavities were prepared on the cemento enamel junction (CEJ) of the buccal sides with enamel margins on occlusal sides and cementum margins on gingival sides. The specimens were divided into 3 groups: G1, single bond adhesive + Z250 composite; G2, P90 adhesive + Filtek Silorane composite;

Cervical Interfacial Bonding Effectiveness of Class II Bulk Versus Incremental Fill Resin Composite Restorations.

Cervical interfacial bonding quality has been a matter of deep concern. The purpose of this study was to analyze microtensile bond strength (MTBS) and cervical interfacial gap distance (IGD) of bulk-fill vs incremental-fill Class II composite restorations. Box-only Class II cavities were prepared in 91 maxillary premolars (n = 7) with gingival margin placement 1 mm above the cementoenamel junction at one side and 1 mm below it on the other side. Eighty-four maxillary premolars were divided into self-etch and total-etch groups and further subdivided into six restorative material subgroups used

FTIR and SEM analysis applied in tissue engineering for root recovering surgery.

Gingival recession is defined by the displacement of the gingival margin in the apical direction, which overcomes the cementum enamel junction. The etiology of gingival retraction is related to tissue inflammation caused by the accumulation of biofilm, by trauma from brushing action. Aesthetic periodontal surgery aims to return the root coverage to aesthetic harmony, and reduce the risk of periodontal disease and caries. To assist in the root coverage process, the porcine collagen matrix (PCM) has been widely studied. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of collagen that make

Inflammatory Diseases of the Teeth and Jaws.

The teeth are unique in that they provide a direct pathway for spread of infection into surrounding osseous and soft tissue structures. Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss worldwide, referring to infection of the supporting structures of the tooth, principally the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Periapical disease refers to an infectious or inflammatory process centered at the root apex of the tooth, usually occurring when deep caries infect the pulp chamber and root canals. We review the pathogenesis, clinical features, and radiographic findi

Infundibula of equine maxillary cheek teeth: Part 2: Morphological variations and pathological changes.

Incomplete cemental filling of the infundibula of equine maxillary cheek teeth (CT) is a common feature. Depending on the extent of the defect, three stages of infundibular decay have been suggested. However, histomorphological criteria to identify non-pathological abnormalities and destructive changes have not been defined. Six hundred and eighty eight CT with no evidence of dental diseases and 55 diseased permanent, fully erupted maxillary CT were evaluated on a macroscopic level by assessing the occlusal surface and horizontal sections, including porphyrin assays to detect residual blood wi

Diagnosis and management of cemental tear: a case report.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

A 32-year-old man complained of swelling after an extraction in the vicinity of the left maxillary premolars. The occlusal surface of the first premolar showed no caries while the second premolar was covered with a crown. Radiographic examination revealed a thin radiolucent defect subgingivally below the cementodentinal junction on the distal aspect. During a review of medical history, the patient presented an extracted fragment that was sent for histopathological examination. A root canal was performed and the defect was closed with mineral trioxide aggregate followed by glass ionomer cement.

Effects of fluoridated milk on root dentin remineralization.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of root caries is increasing with greater life expectancy and number of retained teeth. Therefore, new preventive strategies should be developed to reduce the prevalence of root caries. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fluoridated milk on the remineralization of root dentin and to compare these effects to those of sodium fluoride (NaF) application without milk. METHODS: Thirty extracted human molars were divided into 6 groups, and the root cementum was removed from each tooth. The dentin surface was demineralized and then incubated with one of

A mesoporous silica biomaterial for dental biomimetic crystallization.

The loss of overlying enamel or cementum exposes dentinal tubules and increases the risk of several dental diseases, such as dentin hypersensitivity (causing sharp pain and anxiety), caries, and pulp inflammation. This paper presents a fast-reacting, more reliable and biocompatible biomaterial that effectively occludes exposed dentinal tubules by forming a biomimetic crystalline dentin barrier. To generate this biomaterial, a gelatin-templated mesoporous silica biomaterial (CaCO3@mesoporous silica, CCMS) containing nanosized calcium carbonate particles is mixed with 30% H3PO4 at a 1/1 molar ra

A fresh look at the anatomy and physiology of equine mastication.

There have been many significant and interesting developments in equine dental anatomy during the past 20 years that are of major clinical significance in better understanding the physiology of equine mastication, the etiopathogenesis of some dental disorders, and their safe treatment. The many recent significant developments include descriptions of the enamel infolding of cheek teeth and of infundibular anatomy, including the frequent absence of cementum infilling in many infundibulae, which can lead to infundibular caries. Many important developments in equine dental anatomy are summarized i

Reconsidering remineralization strategies to include nanoparticle hydroxyapatite.

Dental caries is a transmissible biofilm-mediated disease of the teeth that is defined by prolonged periods of low pH resulting in net mineral loss from the teeth. Hydroxyapatite, fluorapatite, and the carbonated forms of calcium phosphate form the main mineral content of dental hard tissues: enamel, dentin, and cementum. Active dental caries results when the biofilm pH on the tooth surface drops below the dissolution threshold for hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite. The clinical evidence of this net mineral loss is porosity, whitespot lesions, caries lesions, and/or cavitation. The potential to

Repair of a perforating internal resorption: two case reports.

Internal resorption is a rare condition in permanent teeth, and may result from trauma, caries, or restorative procedures. Internal resorption is usually asymptomatic and is first identified as a round-shaped enlargement of a root-canal space on routine radiographs. Large resorption defects may result in penetration of the tooth into the periodontium through the cementum. The gold-standard treatment consists of debridement and obturation of the pulp space, sealing of the external communication, and restoration of the normal function of the tooth through a nonsurgical or surgical method. In thi
