Detection of proximal secondary caries at cervical class II-amalgam restoration margins in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the performance of LFpen (DIAGNOdent pen) with two different wedge-shaped tips to conventional bitewing radiography (BW) for detecting proximal secondary caries at the cervical margin of amalgam restorations in vitro. METHODS: Seventy-five molars with class II amalgam restorations were selected. Depending on the marginal filling extension, data was subdivided into a crown group (C), when the filling ended in enamel, and into a root group (R), when the filling ended beyond the cementum-enamel junction. Bayesian analysis including calculation of the area under the receive

Oral diagnosis and treatment planning: part 2. Dental caries and assessment of risk.

Dental caries or tooth decay may be defined as a dynamic process causing progressive destruction of hard tooth substance (enamel, dentine and cementum) involving demineralisation of the inorganic portion of the tooth, and dissolution of the organic portion. The onset and progression of carious lesions involves multiple host, micro-organism and substrate factors interacting in a continuous flux. The diagnosis of initial lesions remains a challenge for practitioners and, despite numerous studies, the assessment of future caries risk is still based largely on a patient's past caries experience. I

A histological study of peripheral dental caries of equine cheek teeth.

Peripheral caries of equine cheek teeth is a poorly described disorder and, in particular little is known of its histopathology. Histological examinations of decalcified sections of 21 equine peripheral caries-affected cheek teeth showed two different patterns of cemental lesions; including progressive enlargement of focal, flask-like lesions leading to breakdown of the adjacent cementum, and secondly; a more generalized flaking-off of thin layers of under-run, surface cementum. A thick layer of plaque and food material usually lay on the surface of affected cementum and also within cemental d

Marginal adaptation of indirect restorations using different resin coating protocols.

This study evaluated the influence of material combinations used in the resin coating technique (RCT) on the marginal adaptation of indirect restorations with gingival margins in enamel (EM) and cement (CM). Eighty third-molars were used. Two cavities were prepared in each tooth. The cavities were distributed into 16 groups. Cavities with EM were filled with the following material combinations: G1: Single-Bond 2 (Sb2), G2: Sb2 + Bond/Scotchbond-Multipurpose (Sb2B), G3: Sb2 + Filtek-Flow Z350 (Sb2Fl), G4: Scotchbond-Multipurpose (SBMP), G5: Clearfil-S3 (CS3), G6: CS3 + Bond/Clearfil-SE Bond (CS

In-vitro evaluation and comparison of the anti-microbial potency of commercially available oral hygiene products against Streptococcus mutans.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the destruction of enamel, dentin, or cementum of teeth due to bacterial activities, which if left untreated can cause considerable pain, discomfort, and treatment costs are very high. Of the oral bacteria, Streptococcus mutans is considered to be causative agent of dental caries in humans. AIM: This study aims at screening the antibacterial potential of available oral hygiene products against S. mutans, the primary etiological agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A selective number of toothpaste and mouth rinse available in the nearby local market was subjected to the

Cervical enamel projections and associated pouch-like opening in mandibular furcations.

BACKGROUND: Cervical enamel projections (CEPs) have been listed among the tooth-associated risk factors that could lead to isolated furcation defects around molar teeth. This is more likely when Grade III CEPs are present. However, the histologic aspects of the CEP interface with regard to the presence or absence of cementum over the enamel projection within the furcation have not been well described. This study was initially undertaken to evaluate this relationship. METHODS: Thirty-five mandibular molars with Grade III CEPs were selected from a collection of extracted teeth and evaluated for

Subgingival calculus imaging based on swept-source optical coherence tomography.

We characterized and imaged dental calculus using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). The refractive indices of enamel, dentin, cementum, and calculus were measured as 1.625 ± 0.024, 1.534 ± 0.029, 1.570 ± 0.021, and 2.097 ± 0.094, respectively. Dental calculus leads strong scattering properties, and thus, the region can be identified from enamel with SS-OCT imaging. An extracted human tooth with calculus is covered with gingiva tissue as an in vitro sample for tomographic imaging.

Promise of periodontal ligament stem cells in regeneration of periodontium.

A great number of patients around the world experience tooth loss that is attributed to irretrievable damage of the periodontium caused by deep caries, severe periodontal diseases or irreversible trauma. The periodontium is a complex tissue composed mainly of two soft tissues and two hard tissues; the former includes the periodontal ligament (PDL) tissue and gingival tissue, and the latter includes alveolar bone and cementum covering the tooth root. Tissue engineering techniques are therefore required for regeneration of these tissues. In particular, PDL is a dynamic connective tissue that is

Design and implementation of therapeutic ultrasound generating circuit for dental tissue formation and tooth-root healing.

Biological tissue healing has recently attracted a great deal of research interest in various medical fields. Trauma to teeth, deep and root caries, and orthodontic treatment can all lead to various degrees of root resorption. In our previous study, we showed that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) enhances the growth of lower incisor apices and accelerates their rate of eruption in rabbits by inducing dental tissue growth. We also performed clinical studies and demonstrated that LIPUS facilitates the healing of orthodontically induced teeth-root resorption in humans. However, the availab

Anatomical studies of maxillary cheek teeth infundibula in clinically normal horses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Although clinical disorders of equine maxillary cheek teeth (CT) infundibula are common, anatomical knowledge of these structures is poor. HYPOTHESIS: Anatomical examinations of sectioned CT infundibula will better define their shapes and sizes and allow identification of infundibular cemental variations and changes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cheek teeth were extracted post mortem from 33 horses, aged 3-30 years, without a clinical history of dental disease. The CT were sectioned longitudinally in the bucco-palatal plane through the widest aspects of both infundibul

Has dental caries prevalence some connection with caries index values in adults?

DMF index values have been used for 70 years and were originally meant to describe both dental status and treatment need in elementary school children. Since then its application to caries experience and severity determination has expanded. Today, WHO has standardized its use in oral health surveys in describing past and present caries experience in adults and the elderly as well. This expansion to all age cohorts creates some problems if the index is limited to dental caries, which can be easily avoided when individual values are not combined. This has been performed in some of the 7,187 DMF

The chemistry of caries: remineralization and demineralization events with direct clinical relevance.

Dental caries is a site-specific disease that undergoes many cycles of demineralization and remineralization during lesion development. Because of its developmental characteristics dynamics, the caries lesion can be arrested and even repaired at its early stages without operative intervention by increasing the net mineral gain during the demineralization and remineralization cycles. This result can be accomplished by reducing the effect of etiological factors such as cariogenic biofilms and diet, and increasing the efficacy of remineralizing agents such as saliva and fluoride.

Formation of caries-like lesions in vitro on the root surfaces of human teeth in solutions simulating plaque fluid.

Lesion formation on root surfaces of human posterior teeth was studied in acetate/lactate buffers with a background electrolyte composition based on plaque fluid analyses. Lesion depth after 28 days at 37 degrees C was measured in relation to: the presence or absence of cementum; the concentration of undissociated buffer; the presence or absence of magnesium ions at plaque fluid concentration. Each factor was evaluated at several values of -log(ion activity product for hydroxyapatite): pI(HA). Solutions were formulated to minimize variation in pH, which varied by < or =0.03 for a given compari

Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomographic imaging of artificial demineralization on exposed surfaces of tooth roots.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the potential of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) to non-destructively measure the depth and severity of artificial demineralization on exposed root surfaces and measure the degree of inhibition by topical fluoride. Although PS-OCT imaging studies have demonstrated the utility of PS-OCT for imaging carious lesions on enamel and dentin surfaces the influence of the cementum layer that is present on intact root surfaces has not been investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, extracted human t

The influence of different irradiation doses and desensitizer application on demineralization of human dentin.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different irradiation doses after desensitizer application on the onset of initial demineralization of human dentin in situ. The root surfaces of 45 freshly extracted caries-free human molars were cleaned, thereby removing the cementum. From each tooth two root dentin specimens were prepared. The specimens were distributed among the following experimental groups: 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 5Gy. The irradiation dose was fractionally applied (0.5Gy/day). One dentin specimen of each group was inserted into both buccal aspects of nine intraoral mand
