Prolonged Breastfeeding at 18 Months and Early Childhood Caries at Age 3 Years: A Population-Based Cohort Study From Japan.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is recommended to 2 years or beyond, but its association with early childhood caries (ECC) after infancy remains uncertain, partly because of inconsistent adjustment for confounders and reverse causation. AIM: To examine whether breastfeeding at 18 months was associated with dental caries at age 3 years. DESIGN: Japanese check-up cohort (2014-2019). Logistic regression estimated odds ratios (ORs), adjusting for sex, regular sweetened juice consumption, screen time > 1 h/day, parental tooth-brushing assistance, single-parent household and parental employment; sensiti

A GelMA hydrogel co-loaded with ursolic acid, ferulic acid and naringin facilitates dentin regeneration by providing a multi-component odontogenic microenvironment.

Dental caries is a prevalent bacterial infectious disease, yet current clinical treatments remain limited because conventional restorative materials provide only mechanical filling and fail to induce dental tissue regeneration. Herein, we developed a composite gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel system (Gel/UFN) co-loaded with three active components from traditional Chinese medicine, including ursolic acid (UA), ferulic acid (FA) and naringin (Nar), to remodel the carious microenvironment and promote dentin remineralization and vascularized pulp-dentin-like tissue formation. Gel/UFN showed

The Oral Virome in Dental Caries: From Ecological Disruptors to Therapeutic Opportunities.

Dental caries results from ecological dysbiosis of oral biofilms driven by frequent sugar exposure, yet the role of viruses, particularly bacteriophages, in this process remains underexplored. This review synthesizes current evidence on how the oral virome contributes to caries pathogenesis and examines emerging phage-based therapeutic strategies. The oral cavity harbors diverse viral communities, including eukaryotic viruses (herpesviruses, papillomaviruses) and prokaryotic viruses (bacteriophages). While herpesviruses like EBV, CMV, and HSV-1 do not directly demineralize teeth, they may act

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists in Dentistry: Promise, Pitfalls, and Evidence Gaps.

GLP-1RAs (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) have become one of the fastest-growing drug classes worldwide, with prescriptions for obesity treatment increasing by 587% from 2019 to 2024. While their metabolic and cardiovascular benefits are well established, the implications for oral health remain largely unexamined. Preclinical evidence consistently demonstrates anti-inflammatory and osteoprotective effects on periodontal and peri-implant tissues: GLP-1RAs promote osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells, reduce alveolar bone resorption in animal models of periodo

Effect of moisture control on root caries progression adjacent to different restorative materials in an in-vitro biofilm model.

This study aimed to assess the impact of moisture control on the risk of caries progression to root restorations (CAR) made of resin composite (RC) or glass ionomer cements (GIC) under conditions of absolute or inadequate moisture control in an in vitro model. In each of the sixty caries-free human maxillary premolars, standardized mesial and distal cavities were prepared 5 mm apical to the cemento-enamel junction. The specimens were randomly allocated to the experimental groups RC-Z250 (Scotchbond Universal SE & Z250, 3M, Seefeld, Germany), GIC-DF (DeltaFil, DMG, Hamburg, Germany), GIC-EF (Eq

Effect of high-sucrose intake on the salivary glands of growing rats: histological analysis and assessment of gene and protein expression.

Excessive sugar intake contributes to noncommunicable diseases, including dental caries. According to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) theory, early-life nutrition influences organ development and future disease susceptibility. This study examined the impact of high-sucrose intake during the growth period on salivary gland development in rats and its potential influence on dental caries after growth. Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: a high-sucrose group (HS), receiving a 15% sucrose solution, and a control group (C), receiving distilled water. Measurements

Comparative Evaluation of Composite Resin Bonded with Novel and Conventional Bonding Agents for Cost Effectiveness, Retention, and Secondary Caries: A Clinical Study.

INTRODUCTION: Restoring aesthetics in primary teeth presents a significant challenge for dentists due to factors such as thin enamel, unique pulpal anatomy, and the small size of these teeth. Discolouration, malformation, extensive caries, or damage from trauma in primary teeth often raise considerable concerns for both patients and their parents. Composite resin has become one of the most popular and reliable tooth-colour restorative materials, offering excellent aesthetic outcomes. AIM: To evaluate the cost effectiveness, retention, and secondary caries of universal adhesive Tetric N-Bond V

Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Inhibitors: Oral Health and Orthodontic Considerations.

Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 4.6% of the US population and are frequently managed with immunomodulatory therapies, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors. These biologic agents, such as infliximab, adalimumab, etanercept, golimumab, and certolizumab pegol, target TNF-α, a key cytokine involved in inflammatory signaling and bone remodeling. While TNF-α inhibitors have demonstrated efficacy in reducing disease activity across a range of autoimmune conditions, their impact on oral health and orthodontic treatment remains underexplored. Clinical studies suggest that T
