Predictors of Developmental Defects of Enamel in Primary Maxillary Central Incisors Using Bayesian Model Selection.

INTRODUCTION: Localized non-inheritable developmental defects of tooth enamel (DDE) are classified as enamel hypoplasia (EH), opacity (OP), and post-eruptive breakdown (PEB) using the enamel defects index. To better understand the etiology of DDE, we assessed the linkages amongst exposome variables for these defects during the specific time duration for enamel mineralization of the human primary maxillary central incisor enamel crowns. In general, these two teeth develop between 13 and 14 weeks in utero and 3-4 weeks' postpartum of a full-term delivery, followed by tooth eruption at about 1 ye

Oral findings in children with congenital cholestatic disease: A systematic review of case reports and case series.

Multiple causes of congenital neonatal cholestasis have been identified, and are classified as extrahepatic or intrahepatic. Biliary atresia (BA), Alagille syndrome (AGS), and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) are the most common of these. Many factors associated with cholestatic diseases are known to degrade the oral health of these children. What are the oral manifestations associated with these diseases in the pediatric population? The aim of this article was to evaluate the impact of congenital cholestasis on oral health in pediatric patients. A systematic review of case

Unexpected lower level of oral periodontal pathogens in patients with high numbers of systemic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is associated with systemic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease, all diseases with large inflammatory components. Some, but not all, reports show periopathogens Porphyromonas gingivialis and Tannerella forsythia at higher levels orally in people with one of these chronic diseases and in people with more severe cases. These oral pathogens are thought to be positively associated with systemic inflammatory diseases through induction of oral inflammation that works to distort systemic inflammation or by directly inducing inflammation a

Iron oxide nanozymes stabilize stannous fluoride for targeted biofilm killing and synergistic oral disease prevention.

Dental caries is the most common human disease caused by oral biofilms despite the widespread use of fluoride as the primary anticaries agent. Recently, an FDA-approved iron oxide nanoparticle (ferumoxytol, Fer) has shown to kill and degrade caries-causing biofilms through catalytic activation of hydrogen peroxide. However, Fer cannot interfere with enamel acid demineralization. Here, we show notable synergy when Fer is combined with stannous fluoride (SnF2), markedly inhibiting both biofilm accumulation and enamel damage more effectively than either alone. Unexpectedly, we discover that the s

Association between dental diseases and oral hygiene care and the risk of vertebral fracture: a nationwide cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Periodontal disease and increased missing teeth were associated with incident vertebral fractures. In contrast, professional dental cleaning and frequent tooth brushing, was associated with a lower risk of vertebral fracture. Better oral hygiene care attenuated the risk associated with dental diseases. PURPOSE: To investigate the association between oral health and the risk of vertebral fractures. METHODS: We included 2,532,253 individuals aged ≥40 years who underwent the Korean National Health Insurance Service health examinations in 2008 and followed up until December 31, 2017.

Saccharibacteria (TM7), but not other bacterial taxa, are associated with childhood caries regardless of age in a South China population.

BACKGROUND: Human microbiome dysbiosis is related to various human diseases, and identifying robust and consistent biomarkers that apply in different populations is a key challenge. This challenge arises when identifying key microbial markers of childhood caries. METHODS: We analyzed unstimulated saliva and supragingival plaque samples from children of different ages and sexes, performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and sought to identify whether consistent markers exist among subpopulations by using a multivariate linear regression model. RESULTS: We found that Acinetobacter and Clostridiales

Beneficial modulation of human health in the oral cavity and beyond using bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance-producing streptococcal probiotics.

The human oral cavity contains a diversity of microbial habitats that have been adopted and adapted to as homeland by an amazingly heterogeneous population of microorganisms collectively referred to as the oral microbiota. These microbes generally co-habit in harmonious homeostasis. However, under conditions of imposed stress, as with changes to the host's physiology or nutritional status, or as a response to foreign microbial or antimicrobial incursions, some components of the oral "microbiome" (viz. the in situ microbiota) may enter a dysbiotic state. This microbiome dysbiosis can manifest i

Evaluation of Anti-plaque and Anti-gingivitis Efficacy of Two Commercially Available Herbal and Non-herbal Toothpastes.

BACKGROUND: Plaque-associated oral disease affects a considerable portion of the population and is considered one of the major causes of tooth loss. The presence of plaque may be the reason for dental caries, gingivitis, periodontal problems, and halitosis. Many mechanical aids are used to control plaque, including toothbrushes, dental floss, mouth rinses, and dentifrices, and the most effective method of controlling gingivitis is supragingival plaque control. AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis efficacy of commercially available herbal toothpaste (M
