Application of the horse grimace scale in horses with dental disease: Preliminary findings.

BACKGROUND: Dental disease is a common but often under-recognised condition in horses, possibly due to an inability to recognise clinical signs of oral discomfort. Some dental disorders are reportedly more painful than others, but there is no current metric by which dental pain can be objectively assessed. This study aimed to determine whether a facial expression-based pain scale offered an objective and reliable method for assessing dental pain in horses. It was hypothesised that dental disorders affecting the periodontium would produce high pain scores. METHODS: Twelve horses with dental di

A Rare Case of Cementoblastoma of the Second Right Maxillary Premolar in a 30-Year-Old Man.

Cementoblastoma is a benign odontogenic mesenchymal tumor characterized by cementum production. Cementoblastoma is considered a relatively rare neoplasm with a predilection to the posterior region of the mandible. The main clinical differential diagnoses include hypercementosis, cemento-osseous dysplasia, condensing osteitis, idiopathic osteosclerosis, osteoblastoma, odontoma, and osteosarcoma. Imaging findings may be pathognomonic when demonstrative. Although rather identical histologically, cementoblastoma exhibits unequivocal fusion to the root of the tooth, which distinguishes it from oste

The Grotte du Bison Neandertals (Arcy-sur-Cure, France).

The Grotte du Bison, in Arcy-sur-Cure (Yonne, France), yielded a large assemblage of 49 Neandertal remains from late Mousterian layers, offering critical insights for the study of Middle to Upper Paleolithic populations of Western Europe. Previous studies described the external morphology of 13 isolated teeth and a partial maxilla. Building on this previous work, the current study provides further descriptions and analyses of the remains, including one postcranial fragment, six cranial fragments, two maxillary fragments, and 40 isolated teeth. The dental remains are examined for a more detaile

Loss of β-catenin causes cementum hypoplasia by hampering cementogenic differentiation of Axin2-expressing cells.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although cementum plays an essential role in tooth attachment and adaptation to occlusal force, the regulatory mechanisms of cementogenesis remain largely unknown. We have previously reported that Axin2-expressing (Axin2+ ) mesenchymal cells in periodontal ligament (PDL) are the main cell source for cementum growth, and constitutive activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in Axin2+ cells results in hypercementosis. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to further evaluate the effects of β-catenin deletion in Axin2+ cells on cementogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

The True History of Cementoblastoma.

Cementoblastoma (CB) is unique among odontogenic tumors because its gross pathological anatomy is pathognomonic in most cases, i.e., a rounded calcified growth that is fused to the root of a tooth and completely encapsulated by fibrous tissue. The resulting radiographic appearance is a well-defined, globular mixed radiopaque/lucent or completely radiopaque mass obliterating some details of the root, with a thin radiolucent zone surrounding the central opacity. Although hundreds of publications have covered the clinicopathologic features of CB, almost nothing is known about its true history. Al

Hypercementosis in Late Pleistocene Homo sapiens fossils from Klasies River Main Site, South Africa.

OBJECTIVE: To examine early Homo sapiens fossils from the Late Pleistocene site of Klasies River Main Site, South Africa for evidence of hypercementosis. The specimens represent seven adult individuals dated to between 119,000 and 58,000 years ago. These observations are contextualized in relation to the incidences of hypercementosis among recent human populations and fossil human samples and the potential etiologies of hypercementosis. DESIGN: The fossils were investigated utilizing micro-CT and nano-CT scanning to visualize and measure cementum apposition on permanent incisor, premolar and

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH): microspatial distribution of trace elements in hypercementosis-affected and unaffected hard dental tissues.

Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a common, painful and poorly understood disease. Enamel, dentin and cementum accumulate both essential and toxic trace elements during mineralization. Characterization of the spatial accumulation pattern of trace elements may provide insight into the role that toxic elements play and inform biological processes affecting these hard dental tissues for future research. Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was used to map the distribution of multiple trace elements and heavy metals across equin

An application of the density standard and scaled-pixel-counting protocol to assess the radiodensity of equine incisor teeth affected by resorption and hypercementosis: preliminary advancement in dental radiography.

BACKGROUND: Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) syndrome is a dental disease where the radiographic signs may be quantified using radiographic texture features. This study aimed to implement the scaled-pixel-counting protocol to quantify and compare the image structure of teeth and the density standard in order to improve the identification of the radiographic signs of tooth resorption and hypercementosis using the EOTRH syndrome model. METHODS AND RESULTS: A detailed examination of the oral cavity was performed in 80 horses and maxillary incisor teeth were evalu

The prevalence of equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis and the role of interincisal angulation in disease severity in a representative cohort of horses in Switzerland.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is an increasingly diagnosed degenerative dental disease in aged horses. The primary aim of this retrospective study was to determine the prevalence of EOTRH in horses admitted to the Equine Hospital, University of Zurich, for dental procedures from 2004 to 2017. A secondary goal was to measure and compare interincisal angles on two-dimensional radiographs of horses with EOTRH to determine whether the interincisal angle is associated with age and severity of the disease. Radiographs were assessed for the presence of lysis and/or

Advances in dental management in the equine geriatric patient: strategies for improved welfare.

Geriatric horses have a high prevalence of dental disease, which is a culmination of age-related dental changes and dental disease throughout the life of the horse that may have long-term consequences. Wear abnormalities, diastemata with periodontal disease, pulpitis and endodontic disease, infundibular caries, and equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis become more prevalent with age. Recognition of age-related dental disease at an early stage can help to treat and possibly preserve teeth for longer. With a natural decrease in masticatory efficiency, it is even more importan

Three-Dimensional Segmentation Assisted with Clustering Analysis for Surface and Volume Measurements of Equine Incisor in Multidetector Computed Tomography Data Sets.

Dental diagnostic imaging has progressed towards the use of advanced technologies such as 3D image processing. Since multidetector computed tomography (CT) is widely available in equine clinics, CT-based anatomical 3D models, segmentations, and measurements have become clinically applicable. This study aimed to use a 3D segmentation of CT images and volumetric measurements to investigate differences in the surface area and volume of equine incisors. The 3D Slicer was used to segment single incisors of 50 horses' heads and to extract volumetric features. Axial vertical symmetry, but not horizon

Unusual imaging appearance of cemental tear in the maxillary first molar on cone-beam computed tomography: A case report.

A cemental tear (CeT) is a definitive clinical entity and its radiographic appearance is well known in single-rooted teeth. However, the imaging features of CeT in multi-rooted teeth have not been clarified. We report a case of CeT which arose in the maxillary first molar and exhibited an unusual appearance in cone-beam computed tomography images. The torn structure was verified as cementum by micro-computed tomography and histological analysis. The hypercementosis, most likely induced by occlusal force, might have been torn from the root by a stronger occlusal force caused by the mandibular i
