Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a progressive, painful disease, affecting incisors, canines, and cheek teeth. Examination findings include gingival inflammation, gingival recession and/or hyperplasia, subgingival swelling, bulbous enlargement of teeth, associated periodontal disease, pathologic tooth fracture, and/or tooth mobility and loss. Current hypotheses include biomechanical stresses and secondary bacterial involvement. Early recognition allows case management, but it is a progressive disease. Owner education is crucial; horses with complete or multi

Two horses that consumed well water with high fluoride content exhibited clinical signs of chronic dental and skeletal fluoride toxicosis and were later euthanized and autopsied. Both horses had degenerative disease of multiple joints and multiple dental defects. Elevated fluoride concentrations were found in bone and tooth samples of both horses, well water, and feed. Microscopically, abnormalities were noted in bone and tooth samples, and consisted mostly of foci of cement necrosis and hypercementosis. Horses exhibiting bilateral, highly symmetrical dental and/or skeletal lesions, with chron

OBJECTIVE: This report discusses the clinical relevance of a novel case of an odontoma and transmigrated canine in the setting of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD), hypercementosis and moderate to severe periodontitis in a 66-year-old patient.
BACKGROUND: An odontoma may infrequently impede tooth eruption and rarely has been implicated with canine transmigration. COD is a benign fibro-osseous lesion associated with decreased vascularity and poorer surgical intervention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A partially edentulous woman, in no acute distress, underwent clinical and radiographic evaluat

BACKGROUND: Open bite is considered one of the most complicated malocclusions in orthodontic treatment. In this study, the authors successfully treated total open bite involved in hypercementosis using orthodontic miniscrews.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A woman aged 25 years 8 months had total open bite. Her occlusal contact at the maximum intercuspation was present at the right second molars. A panoramic radiograph showed diffuse hypercementosis. The titanium miniscrews were interradicullay implanted between the first and second molars, and intrusion force was applied for 14 months. After active treat

Excessive cementum formation, referred to as hypercementosis (HC), is an uncommon nonneoplastic process that principally occurs with permanent teeth. Widespread tooth involvement has been confined mostly to Paget disease of bone. Only a limited number of reports of HC coincident with periodontitis has appeared in the literature. The aim of this article is to present the clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic findings of a 44-year-old female with moderate to severe periodontitis synchronous with 22 HC-affected teeth. A list of other etiologies associated with HC is provided.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Many studies have explored the prevalence of dental anomalies, with conflicting results, possibly attributed to differences in the ethnicities of the populations evaluated.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental anomalies, using panoramic images, in an Iranian population.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, panoramic radiographs of patients aged 18 years or more, between 2015 and 2017 from three private clinics in Babol and Sari, were evaluated for presence or absence of anomalies (tooth shape, number, structure,

OBJECTIVES: Hypercementosis (HC) is an asymptomatic excessive cementum deposition at the dental root apex. There is a lack of research that determines the pattern and associated factors of HC in Saudi Arabia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 815 Orthopantomograms (OPGs) that was obtained from a total of 14003 female patients archived OPGs. The OPGs were retrieved from the Kodak Carestream-R4 database for the period between 2015 and 2017 at Taibah University Dental College and Hospital (TUDCH), Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, Saudi Arab

The progression of equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) has not been completely evaluated, and currently, the only effective treatment is extraction of severely affected teeth. We aim to describe how the disease relates to the history and clinical findings and to report on the outcome in individual horses. This case series comprises data collected from 20 horses (age 14-29 years old) with radiographic findings of EOTRH in their incisor and/or canine teeth. Most horses affected with EOTRH in this study were admitted for dental problems, but some for other complaints

Previous studies revealed that cementum formation is tightly regulated by inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), a mineralization inhibitor. Local PPi concentrations are determined by regulators, including ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1), which increases PPi concentrations by adenosine triphosphate hydrolysis. Orthodontic forces stimulate alveolar bone remodelling, leading to orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). To better understand how disturbed mineral metabolism and the resulting altered periodontal structures affect OTM, we employed Enpp1 mutant mice that feature reduced PP

Cathepsin K (CTSK) is a member of cysteine proteinase family, and is predominantly expressed in osteoclastsfor degradationof bone matrix proteins. Given the similarity in physical properties of bone and dental mineralized tissues, including enamel, dentin and cementum, CTSK is likely to take part in mineralization process during odontogenesis. On the other hand, patients with pycnodysostosis caused by mutations of the CTSK gene displayedmultipledental abnormalities, such as hypoplasia of the enamel, obliterated pulp chambers, hypercementosis and periodontal disease. Thereforeitis necessary to

Craniometaphyseal Dysplasia (CMD) is a sclerosing osseous dysplasia characterised by hyperostosis of craniofacial and long bones, resulting in distortion and cranial nerve palsies. We present a case report on the management of a 63 year old female with Craniometaphyseal Dysplasia. This report describes an additional clinical manifestation of hypercementosis, which although well recognised in other sclerosing osseous dysplasias, is not reported in the literature for Craniometaphyseal Dysplasia. We discuss established in vivo studies in mice which link the genetic mutations found in Craniometaph

During daily routine oral examinations in a research colony of nonhuman primates (NHPs, Macaca fascicularis), a variety of oral-dental lesions were identified. A dental care program was established based on these findings. Based on the presence of dental clinical signs and their severity, 31 animals were triaged to be examined and treated by a veterinarian. Clinical examination consisted of visual inspection using a periodontal probe/explorer and full or partial mouth dental radiographs. Treatment was performed during the same procedure. Some animals had a follow-up examination including radio

Orofacial changes are frequent in acromegaly. Their evolution is slowly progressive. The lips (everted and thickened), the mandibular morphology (prognathism), the tongue (macroglossia), the soft palate and the uvula (increased and thickened), the parodontis (gingival hyperplasia, paradontitis), the teeth (increased interdental spaces, hypercementosis, increased dental mobility, multiple tooth loss) are concerned. Functional consequences are significant (obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, malocclusion, pain of the oral maxillofacial area, decrease of the quality of life). They are rarely notice
