Dental manifestation of primary idiopathic hypoparathyroidism.

Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism (IHP) is a rare endocrinopathic disorder, of idiopathic nature, characterized by a deficiency of parathyroid hormone causing low serum calcium (Ca) and high serum phosphorus concentrations. We present a case report ofa 40-year-old woman with complaint of bleeding gums and tingling sensation in fingers and toes reported to our department in March 2005 with no tangible diagnosis from previous medical examinations. Oral findings included abnormally short roots, cemental hyperplasia, widening of the periodontal ligament space and root resorption. Laboratory investigat

FAM20A mutations can cause enamel-renal syndrome (ERS).

Enamel-renal syndrome (ERS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by severe enamel hypoplasia, failed tooth eruption, intrapulpal calcifications, enlarged gingiva, and nephrocalcinosis. Recently, mutations in FAM20A were reported to cause amelogenesis imperfecta and gingival fibromatosis syndrome (AIGFS), which closely resembles ERS except for the renal calcifications. We characterized three families with AIGFS and identified, in each case, recessive FAM20A mutations: family 1 (c.992G>A; g.63853G>A; p.Gly331Asp), family 2 (c.720-2A>G; g.62232A>G; p.Gln241_Arg271del), and family 3 (c

Lobodontia: the unravelling of the wolf teeth.

Abnormalities of tooth shape and size generally coexist, as both are determined during the morphodifferentiation stage of odontogenesis. This report describes a case of lobodontia exhibiting multiple dental anomalies of which, "fang like" cuspids, multituberculism of molars, hypodontia along with severe generalized microdontia are distinctive. Radiographic features, diagnostic convolutions, differential diagnosis and clinical significance have also been highlighted.

Isolation of Treponema and Tannerella spp. from equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis related periodontal disease.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Red complex bacteria, i.e. Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola and Tannerella forsythia, are involved in the onset and progression of periodontal disease in man, yet seldom inhabit the oral cavity of healthy individuals. Periodontal disease is also encountered in horses, with equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) constituting a particular form of disease. However, only little is known about the oral microbiome of healthy and periodontitis-affected equids. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to test the hypothesis that red complex bacteria ar

A new understanding of oral and dental disorders of the equine incisor and canine teeth.

This article discusses the classification systems for dental fractures and how the assessment affects treatment options. Diagonal incisor malocclusion is discussed in relation to skull asymmetry and how this commonly relates to premolar and molar occlusion. Oral and radiographic assessment of incisive bone fracture and incisor avulsion is reviewed for determining treatment options. A summary of incisor and canine resorption and hypercementosis is presented. Clinical presentations, staging, and classifications of tooth resorption as well as canine odontoplasty are discussed. Excessive plaque an

Advances in the treatment of diseased equine incisor and canine teeth.

Dental therapies for equid incisor and canine teeth have modernized significantly over the last 2 decades. Basic principles in incisor reduction have become more conservative, and extraction procedures more exacting. Periodontal and endodontic treatments are described to save teeth that would have succumbed to extraction in the past. Pathologic impacts on treatment decisions for equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis are significant, and veterinarians and owners need to be aware of treatment options and outcomes. Easy access to equid incisor and canine teeth offers a variety

Finite element analysis of equine incisor teeth. Part 2: investigation of stresses and strain energy densities in the periodontal ligament and surrounding bone during tooth movement.

This study investigated the hypothetical contribution of biomechanical loading to the onset of equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) and to elucidate the physiological age-related positional changes of the equine incisors. Based on high resolution micro-computed tomography (μCT) datasets, 3-dimensional models of entire incisor arcades and the canine teeth were constructed representing a young and an old incisor dentition. Special attention was paid to constructing an anatomically correct model of the periodontal ligament (PDL). Using previously determined Young's mo

Three-dimensional anatomy of equine incisors: tooth length, enamel cover and age related changes.

BACKGROUND: Equine incisors are subjected to continuous occlusal wear causing multiple, age related changes of the extragingival crown. It is assumed that the occlusal wear is compensated by continued tooth elongation at the apical ends of the teeth. In this study, μCT-datasets offered the opportunity to analyze the three-dimensional appearance of the extra- and intraalveolar parts of the enamel containing dental crown as well as of the enamel-free dental root. Multiple morphometric measurements elucidated age related, morphological changes within the intraalveolar part of the incisors. RESUL

Dentoalveolar paleopathology of the early modern humans from Zhirendong, South China.

The fragmentary early Late Pleistocene, early modern human remains from Zhirendong, south China, present a suite of dentoalveolar pathologies and anomalies. The lesions include lower molar buccal alveolar resorption (Zhiren 1), massive dental caries in a mandibular molar associated with hypercementosis (Zhiren 2), and bilateral mesial premolar (P3) periapical lesions (granulomata with a probable left abscess) (Zhiren 3). The Zhiren 3 periapical lesions, given their bilaterality and the non-pathological incisor and canine alveoli, suggest dens evaginatus, although absence of the Zhiren 3 dentit

Occurrence of hypercementosis in a German population.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to assess the occurrence of hypercementosis in a selected German dental school patient population. METHODS: A total of 800 full-mouth periapical radiographic series were screened. The radiographs were evaluated under optimal conditions by using double magnifying glasses. A total of 18,589 teeth including third molars were evaluated. The relative incidence of hypercementosis and the correlation regarding the location (left-side versus right-side occurrence, maxillary versus mandibular, and anterior versus posterior teeth) and between men and women we

Periodontitis with hypercementosis: report of a case and discussion of possible aetiologic factors.

BACKGROUND: Hypercementosis may be idiopathic or secondary to either local factors or systemic disorders. However, periodontitis as an aetiologic factor in the formation of hypercementosis has never been documented in the literature. METHODS: We report a case of periodontitis with hypercementosis, affecting the right mandibular second premolar and first molar teeth. RESULTS: Our patient's maxillary was edentulous and the mandibular teeth #47, #43, #42, #41, #31, #32, #33, #36, #37 were missing. The right mandibular second premolar and first molar had first-degree mobility and second-degree m

Anterior tooth root morphology and size in Neanderthals: taxonomic and functional implications.

Comparing modern humans and Neanderthals, we have previously shown that recent modern humans (RMH) and Neanderthals differ in anterior root lengths, and that this difference cannot be explained by group differences in overall mandibular size. Here, we first document the evolutionary changes of root size and shape of the anterior upper and lower dentition in a broad chronological and geographical framework. We then use the size and shape differences between RMH and Neanderthals to classify several isolated teeth from Kebara cave and Steinheim, and to interpret the anterior tooth roots of the Ta

Early Pleistocene human mandible from Sima del Elefante (TE) cave site in Sierra de Atapuerca (Spain): a palaeopathological study.

Here we present a detailed palaeopathological study of the hominin mandible ATE9-1 found at the Sima del Elefante site (TE), Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain. This fossil represents the earliest hominin remains from Western Europe with an age of ca. 1.3 Ma. The specimen displays several dento-gnathic lesions; the antiquity and geographic location of this fossil justifies a detailed palaeopathological study to determine if the pathologies have significantly altered taxonomically relevant features. Our study reveals severe dental attrition combined with generalized hypercementosis, alveolar root expos

Dental patient with acromegaly: a case report.

Acromegaly is an acquired disorder related to excessive production of growth hormone after epiphyseal closure of bones. It is characterized by progressive somatic disfigurement (mainly involving the face and extremities) and systemic manifestations. The prevalence is estimated at 1:140,000-250,000. Although acromegaly rarely manifests in the orofacial regions, it must be considered in patients who develop malocclusion after adolescence. Here, we present a case of acromegaly with brief review of the literature.

Orthodontic treatment in a patient with sickle cell anemia.

Sickle cell anemia is a common hereditary hematologic disease. It affects many systems and tissues in the body, including the mouth. Delayed tooth eruption, an uncommon degree of periodontitis, alterations in the cells of the tongue surface, hypomaturation and hypomineralization in enamel and dentin, pulp calcifications, hypercementosis, and bone alterations resulting in maxillary protrusion and formation of a thick trabecular pattern are some oral manifestations of the disease. The aim of this study was to report the orthodontic treatment of a patient with sickle cell anemia. Treatment consis

Focal hypercementosis affecting a mandibular molar: a case report.

Hypercementosis is an abnormal thickening of the cementum. Although the etiology of this condition is uncertain, it occasionally is related to disorders of bone metabolism, including Paget disease and hyperthyroidism. The case presented here illustrates localized idiopathic deposition of excess cementum at the apex of the distal root of a mandibular first molar.

Effect of HIP/ribosomal protein L29 deficiency on mineral properties of murine bones and teeth.

Mice lacking HIP/RPL29, a component of the ribosomal machinery, display increased bone fragility. To understand the effect of sub-efficient protein synthetic rates on mineralized tissue quality, we performed dynamic and static histomorphometry and examined the mineral properties of both bones and teeth in HIP/RPL29 knock-out mice using Fourier transform infrared imaging (FTIRI). While loss of HIP/RPL29 consistently reduced total bone size, decreased mineral apposition rates were not significant, indicating that short stature is not primarily due to impaired osteoblast function. Interestingly,
