Hypercementosis and odontogenic epithelial hyperplasia associated with a tooth root remnant mimicking a neoplasm. A case report.

Hypercementosis presents as painless, single or multiple non-neoplastic cementum formation beyond the physiological limits of the tooth. It often occurs in the apical area of the involved tooth following infection, chemical or mechanical trauma. We report on radiographic and histopathological findings in a single case of late intraosseous hypercementosis and odontogenic epithelial hyperplasia associated with a minute apical tooth root remnant years after its extraction, mimicking a tumour.

Bone inductive proteins to enhance postorthodontic stability.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the use of bone morphogenetic proteins to enhance postorthodontic stability in sheep and to develop a biological method of postorthodontic retention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: First incisors were extracted in four mature and healthy sheep, and the second incisors were tipped reciprocally toward the midline and then retained. Dried bone matrix was injected into the distal periodontal space of the left second incisor. The right second incisor was left as a control. Both incisors were retained in the tipped position for 4 weeks. Then, the orthodontic appliance was removed an

Effect of eda loss of function on upper jugal tooth morphology.

The Tabby/eda mice, which bear a loss of function mutation for the eda (ectodysplasinA) gene, are known to display developmental anomalies in organs with an ectodermal origin. Although the lower jugal (cheek) teeth of Tabby/eda mice have been extensively studied, upper teeth have never been investigated in detail. However, this may help us to further understand the function of the eda gene in tooth development. In this work, the shape and size of both the crown and the radicular system were studied in the Tabby/eda mice upper jugal teeth. To deal with the high morphological variability, we def

Evaluation of Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry for the Quantitative Determination of Lead in Different Parts of Archeological Human Teeth.

The lead content of teeth or tooth-parts has been used as a biomarker of cumulative lead exposure in clinical, epidemiological, environmental, and archaeological studies. Through the application of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, a pilot study of the micrometer-scale distribution and quantification of lead was conducted for two human teeth obtained from an archeological burial site in Manhattan, New York, USA. Lead was highly localized within each tooth, with accumulation in circumpulpal dentine and cementum. The maximum localized lead content in circumpulpal denti

Extraction of upper first molar resulting in fracture of maxillary tuberosity.

Fracture of the maxillary tuberosity sometimes can happen when pneumatization of the maxillary sinus extends between the roots of upper molars. Some factors may lead to this complication including prominent or curved roots, chronic periapical infection, hypercementosis, root ankylosis and tooth fusion. This paper reports a case with fracture of the maxillary tuberosity following extraction of an upper first molar in general dental practice. Prevention from any complication during extractions of maxillary molars with large antral enlargement is possible with careful preoperative examination and

Paget's disease of bone and osteonecrosis.

UNLABELLED: Paget's disease of bone, although common in the long bones and pelvis, is less common in the head and neck. A 20-year follow-up is reported of a patient who was diagnosed with Paget's disease following the investigation of her initial oral complaint. Following surgical extraction of two teeth in her maxilla, the sockets have failed to heal, despite numerous attempted interventions. This case highlights both the cranio-maxillofacial and oral manifestations of Paget's disease of bone, its effects on surgical exodontia and the possible effects of bisphosphonate therapy. Immunolocalization of matrix metalloproteinases-2 and -9 during apical periodontitis development.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and -9 (MMP-9) during apical periodontitis development. METHODS: Using an experimental design of induced periapical lesions in rats and immunohistochemistry assay as investigative tool, the MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression and distribution were evaluated at 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60 and 90 days after coronary access and pulp exposure of the first left mandibular molar to the oral environment. Two blind observers scored the immunoreactivity. A semi-quantitative analysis was performed. RESULTS: Ex

Sclerostin in mineralized matrices and van Buchem disease.

Sclerostin is an inhibitor of bone formation expressed by osteocytes. We hypothesized that sclerostin is expressed by cells of the same origin and also embedded within mineralized matrices. In this study, we analyzed (a) sclerostin expression using immunohistochemistry, (b) whether the genomic defect in individuals with van Buchem disease (VBD) was associated with the absence of sclerostin expression, and (c) whether this was associated with hypercementosis. Sclerostin was expressed by cementocytes in mouse and human teeth and by mineralized hypertrophic chondrocytes in the human growth plate.

Brief communication: paleopathology of the Kiik-Koba 1 Neandertal.

The Kiik-Koba 1 Neandertal partial skeleton (canine, partial hands, partial leg, and feet), of a approximately 40-year-old probable male, exhibits a suite of pathological lesions, including hypercementosis, minor fibrous ossifications, pedal phalangeal fracture, and pronounced enthesopathies on the patella and calcanei in the context of no articular degenerations. The first two sets of lesions are related to age in the context of advanced dental attrition and physical strains. The third lesion joins a series of healed minor traumatic lesions among the Neandertals. The last represents either pr

Enamel dysplasia with hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia: review of the literature and report of a case.

This article documents an additional case of a rare syndrome, reported only in black persons in South Africa. It is characterised by hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia with central odontogenic fibroma (WHO-type)-like features attached to multiple impacted teeth, and with generalized enamel dysplasia showing features of hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta. Other features associated with the syndrome, but not present in all reported cases, include open-bite malocclusion, gingival overgrowth, hypodontia, pulpal calcifications and aberrant root formation of the unerupted teeth. Enamel dysplasia with hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia (EDHFH) syndrome: suggested pathogenic mechanisms.

The syndrome of enamel dysplasia with hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia (EDHFH) is an unusual syndrome and is unique to black South Africans. Major criteria for the syndrome are enamel dysplasia with generalized amelogenesis imperfecta-like features and atypical hyperplastic dental follicles with microscopic features of central odontogenic fibroma WHO-type (follicle analogue) attached to the crowns of multiple impacted teeth. Minor features of some cases are anterior open-bite malocclusion, supernumerary teeth, pulpal calcification, aberrant roots with hypercementosis, and hypodont

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis.

A poorly described, painful disorder of incisor and canine teeth, variably causing periodontitis, with resorptive or proliferative changes of the calcified dental tissues, has recently been documented in aged horses. No plausible aetiopathogenesis for this syndrome has been recorded. Eighteen diseased teeth from eight horses were examined grossly and microscopically and showed the presence of odontoclastic cells by tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. A chronological sequence of odontoclastic resorption followed by hypercementosis was demonstrated and, consequently, the term eq

A scanning electron microscopic study of hypercementosis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate morphological characteristics of teeth with hypercementosis that are relevant to endodontic practice. Twenty-eight extracted teeth with hypercementosis had their root apexes analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The teeth were divided according to tooth groups and type of hypercementosis. The following aspects were examined under SEM: the contour and regularity of the root surface; presence of resorption; presence and number of apical foramina, and the diameter of the main foramen. The progression of club shape hypercementosis was directly as

Concrescence of teeth: cemental union between the crown of an impacted tooth and the roots of an erupted tooth.

Concrescence of teeth is a condition showing a union of adjacent teeth by only cementum. In all the previously reported cases, the union has been observed between the roots of the affected teeth. Here, we describe the first case that showed a concrescence of the crown of an impacted tooth and the roots of the erupted tooth. In addition, we discuss how this condition, especially the deposition of acellular cementum on the crown, occurred.

Dental benign cementomas in three horses.

Cementoma is a very rare odontogenic neoplasm of mesenchymal origin. Clinically, in 3 horses, multiple bony enlargements of the upper and lower jaw extending into the oral cavity were observed. Radiographically, multiple, well-circumscribed, radiopaque masses surrounding the roots of the upper and lower incisors or an upper premolar tooth were present. Due to malocclusion and local pain, single teeth were extracted in each case. Grossly, a hard grayish-white mass surrounding the root of the incisors and the premolars was identified. Histopathologically, the tumors consisted of excessive deposi

Histological assessment of pulp condition after apical vital root transection in one root of multirooted teeth in dogs: a preliminary study.

One of the most important aspects in surgery is the healing process after the periapical surgery. Past studies have shown occasional encounters with vital root resection and have noted varying degrees of pulpal response after root resection in periodontal disease. The purpose of this investigation was to observe the pulpal and periapical responses to intentional apical vital root transection in one root of multirooted teeth of German-Canadian dogs over a 6-month postoperative period. This is an experimental study performed on left maxillary and mandibular quadrants of four adult German-Canadia
