[Surgical removal of an atypically large extensive radicular cyst in the mandible: a case report.].

The radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cyst and is caused by inflammation. It can become atypically large, although the size of the radiographic osteolysis says nothing about the entity of the lesion. This case shows an unusually large multilocular radicular cyst expanding buccally from tooth 46 in a patient with severe autism who can only be treated under general anesthesia. The clinical and radiological picture as well as the intraoperative situation was more indicative of an aggressive cyst or benign tumor. The lesion was surgically completely removed and the teeth 46, 47 and 48

Immunohistochemical Comparison of Ki-67 and MCM-3 in Odontogenic Cysts: An Observational Study.

Odontogenic cysts are a diverse group of pathologic entities with different proliferation potential, leading to variations in their biological behavior. One of the most cited proliferation markers used in diagnostic histopathology is Ki-67. Another group of proteins recently investigated is minichromosome maintenance (MCM-3) and its expression has been evaluated in several odontogenic lesions but the results were controversial. Thus, the present study endeavored to compare the expression of MCM-3 and Ki-67 in odontogenic cysts. Furthermore, a pioneer attempt was made to evaluate the sensitivit

A Comparative Immunohistochemical Expression of TRAP in Odontogenic Cysts.

INTRODUCTION: Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is an acid phosphatase metalloprotein enzyme expressed in osteoclasts and is related to bone resorption. The molecular mechanisms involved in the different behavior of odontogenic keratocysts have not yet been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to compare TRAP expression in odontogenic keratocysts, radicular cysts, and dentigerous cysts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we selected 60 samples, including 20 cases of each one of the odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), radicular cysts (RC) and dentigerous cysts

A Case of Respiratory Epithelium-Lined Cyst with Enriched Nociceptor Innervation.

Apical lesions of endodontic origin can be classified as either granulomas or cysts. In rare cases, respiratory epithelium can proliferate and encapsulate a lesion, forming a cyst. Moreover, the innervation of apical lesions has only been previously reported in animal models of apical periodontitis. This report demonstrates an unusual case in which tooth #15 was initially treated with nonsurgical root canal therapy. Still, the patient remained in moderate to severe pain for several days following the procedure. Next, an intentional replantation was performed in which a periapical cyst was cure

Coexistence of a Nasopalatine Duct Cyst and Radicular Cyst: A Unique Clinical Presentation.

This study discusses a case of coexistence of two distinct cysts, a nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) and a radicular cyst, within the anterior region of the maxilla. NPDC is a prevalent non-odontogenic developmental cyst, while radicular cysts are commonly found in odontogenic inflammatory cysts. The clinical and radiographic characteristics of these cysts are explored, emphasizing the importance of accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. In this case, a 51-year-old male patient presented with swelling and pain in the maxillary anterior region. Radiographic examinations revealed a heart-shaped

A bird's-eye view of pathologist over diagnostic confusion of oral cavity lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Oral cavity can be host to multitude of neoplastic, premalignant or non neoplastic pathological lesions. Diagnosis of lesions of oral cavity is always of interest to clinician and pathologist and rely on clinical appearance of lesions. There can be variation in diagnosis of clinical lesion with histopathology. Many oral carcinomas arise within the sites that previously had premalignant lesion. Incidence of oral cancers in population has increased among younger generations related to habits and lifestyle. These lesions during clinical presentation are misleading and create diagnos

Radicular Cyst Associated with Type 3B Dens Invaginatus in a Permanent Maxillary Lateral Incisor.

Dens invaginatus (DI) is a developmental abnormality of the tooth resulting in the invagination of the enamel organ into the dental papilla before the calcification of dental tissues. DI is one of the common dental deformities, but its association with the radicular cyst (RC) is still very uncommon. Oehler's Type 3B DI has a deep invagination that extends apically communicating with the apical area. This allows the entry of irritants predisposing for dental caries, periapical lesions, and pulp pathology if there is a communication with pulp. The sequelae of undiagnosed and untreated coronal in

Surgical management of an odontogenic cutaneous sinus tract misdiagnosed for 4 years.

A cutaneous sinus tract of dental origin may easily be misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated. This paper reported a case of a 20-year-old male patient referred for a productive cutaneous sinus tract misdiagnosed by medical doctors for more than 4 years. The clinical and radiographic examinations confirmed the odontogenic origin related to a mandibular first right molar presenting an infected radicular cyst. Surgical treatment was performed leading to a significant healing of the sinus tract.

ALDH1 expression and potential clinical implications in chronic inflammatory periapical lesions.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH-1) is a marker of stem cells in a variety of diseases, but its role in individuals with chronic inflammatory periapical lesions remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of cells with a stem cell profile based on the immunoexpression of ALDH-1 in periapical granulomas (PGs) and radicular cysts (RCs). A total of 51 cases of periapical lesions (25 PGs and 26 RCs) were subjected to immunohistochemical study. The anti-ALDH-1 antibody was applied using the immunoperoxidase technique. An immunoexpression score (intensity vs. percentage of c

Radiolucent Lesions of the Jaws: An Attempted Demonstration of the Use of Co-Word Analysis to List Main Similar Pathologies.

(1) Background: Many radiolucent jaw lesions exist, and they often show a radiographic resemblance, rendering diagnosis a challenging act. Closely related lesions should be frequently mentioned together in the academic literature, which might be helpful for junior practitioners in determining their differential diagnosis. The usefulness of bibliometric analysis in this respect has yet to be demonstrated. (2) Methods: This study evaluated academic publications on radiolucent jaw lesions, as indexed by the Web of Science Core Collection database. The mentions of radiolucent jaw lesions were extr

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst of Anterior Maxilla - A Rare Case Report.

RATIONALE: Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare type of cyst of the jaws, which shares histological features with that of lateral periodontal cyst, botryoid cyst, radicular cyst with mucous metaplasia, or low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, making it difficult to come to a definitive diagnosis. Not many cases of GOC have been reported in the literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old male patient presented with pain in the upper right front tooth region. Mild extraoral swelling, obliterating the right nasolabial fold, was present. Tenderness on percussion was present in involved teeth.

Application of cone-beam computed tomography in the management of dilacerated maxillary central incisor associated with radicular cyst and external root resorption - A case report.

The maxillary anterior region is the most common site for the occurrence of radicular cyst in permanent dentition, because of a high frequency of trauma in this region. As radicular cyst is categorized as an inflammatory cyst, endodontic treatment of the tooth associated with the cyst becomes a part of the treatment regimen. Management of radicular cyst becomes challenging when it involves tooth with complex root morphology. This report presents the diagnosis and successful management of a dilacerated maxillary central incisor associated with a radicular cyst and external root resorption. Cone
