Wesselsbron virus at the livestock-human interface: A practical guide to disease recognition and diagnosis.

Wesselsbron virus (WSLV) is a mosquito-borne Orthoflavivirus of the yellow fever virus (YFV) serocomplex, widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. It is neglected, and its true impact is likely underestimated. WSLV causes abortion, congenital malformations, and neonatal mortality in sheep, the primary recognized vertebrate host, but infections have also been documented in goats, cattle, camels, wildlife, and humans. The virus is maintained in complex cycles predominantly involving Aedes mosquitoes and incompletely defined domestic and wild vertebrate hosts. Direct infection via the placen

SNX17 facilitates entry and infection of Rift Valley fever virus and related bunyaviruses.

Bunyaviruses are a group of multisegmented, negative-sense RNA viruses. Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a representative member that can cause sporadic human outbreaks. We previously identified low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) as a host entry factor for RVFV and several bunyaviruses. This screen also identified additional factors as proviral host proteins, including sorting nexin 17 (SNX17). Here, we describe efforts to characterize SNX17 in bunyaviral infection. Our findings reveal that the removal of SNX17 results in a substantial reduction of RVFV infection in SNX

Zoonotic arboviruses and associated risk factors in donkeys from northeastern Algeria.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), and several zoonotic flaviviruses represent an emerging threat to animal and human health. In Algeria, particularly in the northern regions, data on the circulation of these viruses remain limited, especially for RVFV and CCHFV. In this context, we aimed to assess the seroprevalence of these arboviruses among donkeys across three provinces in northeastern Algeria and to identify factors associated with seropositivity. Between 2019 and 2024, 183 serum samples were collected and analyzed by ELISA. Binary logistic regr

Facilitators and barriers to community-based livestock abortion reporting for Rift Valley Fever surveillance in Uganda: A COM-B analysis.

Rift Valley Fever Disease (RVFD) causes substantial economic losses via livestock abortion storms, yet community-based abortion reporting for early warning remains suboptimal in endemic settings. This study analysed the behavioural determinants of livestock abortion reporting to inform RVF surveillance interventions in Uganda. We conducted a cross-sectional study using qualitative data collection methods in Isingiro District, Uganda, employing the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) framework. We conducted 29 key informant interviews with national/district policymakers and te

Rift Valley fever seroprevalence and associated factors in non-vaccinated livestock (cattle and small ruminants) in Arua, Lira and Apac districts, Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic viral disease of major veterinary public health and economic importance, transmitted primarily by mosquitoes and associated with significant livestock losses and human infections. Despite its epidemic potential and its demonstrated endemicity in western Uganda, data on its seroprevalence and associated factors from northern Uganda remain limited. This study determined the seroprevalence of RVF and its associated factors in unvaccinated livestock in Apac, Arua, and Lira districts. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A cross-sectional study was conducted i

Imported mosquito-borne infectious diseases in travellers and migrants: Global patterns, clinical overlap, and prevention gaps-an umbrella review of 21 systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND: Imported mosquito-borne infectious diseases (MBIDs) pose public health challenges in nonendemic regions, but cross-disease evidence remains fragmented. We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews to identify gaps and inform clinical practice and research priorities. METHODS: Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library) were searched from inception to December 3, 2025, for systematic reviews on nine imported MBIDs, including chikungunya, dengue, Rift Valley fever, yellow fever, Zika, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, Japanese encephalitis

Lack of evidence for arthropod or vertical transmission of Hepacivirus bovis in a persistently infected dairy herd.

Hepacivirus bovis (BovHepV) has been detected globally since its initial description in 2015, but its transmission routes remain largely unknown. Arthropod-borne or vertical transmission is a common route for several livestock viruses, including Rift Valley fever virus and bluetongue virus. Moreover, many members of the genus Orthoflavivirus (family Flaviviridae) are transmitted by hematophagous arthropods, raising the possibility that hepaciviruses such as BovHepV, which also belongs to the Flaviviridae family, could share similar transmission routes. In this study, we examined possible trans

Climate-informed surveillance for climate-sensitive infectious diseases in Somalia: early warning systems, policy gaps, and preparedness priorities.

Climate variability is reshaping infectious disease risk through ecological, environmental, social, and health-system pathways. However, its operational implications remain insufficiently defined in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Somalia is a critical case because recurrent droughts and floods intersect with displacement, food insecurity, weak water and sanitation infrastructure, disrupted immunisation, livestock dependence, and constrained health-system capacity. This narrative review synthesises evidence on climate-sensitive infectious disease risks in Somalia, examines existing sur

Hyperendemicity of Rift Valley Fever in Southwestern Uganda Associated With the Rapidly Evolving Lineage C Viruses.

BACKGROUND: Recent Rift Valley fever (RVF) epidemiology in the eastern Africa region is characterized by widening geographic range and increasing frequency of small disease clusters. Here we conducted studies in the southwestern (SW) Uganda region that has since 2016 reported increasing RVF activities. METHODS: A 22-month long hospital-based study in 3 districts of SW Uganda targeting patients with acute febrile illness or unexplained bleeding was followed by a cross-sectional population-based human-animal survey. We then estimated RVF virus (RVFV) force of infection and yearly cases using ag

Differential innate immune activation by wild-type and NSs-deficient RVFV strains in human blood monocytes.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a Phlebovirus causing febrile and haemorrhagic illness in ruminants and humans. The viral protein NSs is a major virulence factor that suppresses the IFN-β response in various hosts. Hence, RVFV variants lacking functional NSs, such as Clone 13, are highly attenuated. It is speculated that from the sites of infection, the virus disseminates to the target organs via the bloodstream. We hypothesized that primary infection of circulating immune cells and their response to infection are critical factors determining systemic RVFV spread and pathogenesis. Human PBMC

Attenuated viral strains of priority pathogens for potential use in controlled human infection model studies: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: There are several known pathogens and families identified as high risk for pandemic potential. It is essential to study these pathogens and develop medical countermeasures to mitigate disease prior to potential pandemics. Controlled human infection models (CHIMs) using attenuated viral strains may offer an efficient and safe way to do this. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to systematically examine the literature for attenuated, but replication competent, strains of Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) identified priority pathogens (Ebola, Lassa virus, Nipah virus, Rift Va

Molecular diagnosis of arboviruses (dengue, Chikungunya, yellow fever, Rift Valley fever, Mayaro, West Nile, and Zika viruses) in non-malaria acute febrile illnesses in Kenya's Garissa County, July 2023, and Mombasa County, July 2024.

BACKGROUND: Viral haemorrhagic fever outbreaks can have a devastating impact on local populations. In Mombasa County, and also remote Kenyan areas, such as Garissa County, where health centres have limited diagnostic capacity, the causes of non-malaria, febrile illnesses are often unknown. In particular mosquito-borne, arboviral infections, which can lead to severe disease manifestations, are difficult to detect without molecular diagnostics. The present study aimed to establish the prevalence of selected arboviral agents in blood samples from patients presenting with non-malarial febrile illn

Investigating the Sudan virus outbreak in Uganda through the deployment of a mobile laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Uganda faced its sixth reported Ebola outbreak between September 2022 and January 2023, the fifth to be recorded as Sudan Virus Disease (SVD) in the country. In response to this, the Ugandan Ministry of Health (MoH), rapidly deployed a mobile laboratory from the National Health Laboratory and Diagnostics Services (NHLDS) within one week of the declared outbreak. Here we describe the deployment of the mobile laboratory to Mubende, the outbreak epicentre, as part of the national response. This provided (1) efficient diagnostics and characterization of Sudan virus cases to support nat

Interepidemic Rift Valley fever in East Africa: the recent risk landscape and projected impacts of global change.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease that causes sporadic, multi-country epidemics. However, there is limited understanding of RVF virus circulation during interepidemic periods and the potential impacts of global change on interepidemic RVF. To address these knowledge gaps, we built a predictive model using recent interepidemic RVF outbreak data from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We then projected interepidemic RVF risk for three future time periods (2021-2040, 2041-2060, 2061-2080) under three global change scenarios representing different trajectories for climate and human population

Altered histone modifications in Aedes aegypti midguts following Rift Valley fever virus exposure.

When arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are delivered to vector mosquitoes in infectious bloodmeals, viral components interact with host proteins to hijack cells and initiate replication. The extent to which arbovirus infection alters mosquito host transcriptional regulatory processes is currently unknown. We hypothesized that histone modifications would be altered in mosquitoes exposed to Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV MP12). H3K27ac and H3K9me3 marks were interrogated using CUT&RUN in a mosquito species that has a predicted dissemination barrier, Aedes aegypti. Global H3K27ac peaks showed

Entropy-based analysis of Rift Valley fever transmission dynamics using delay differential equations.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a vector-borne, transmissible zoonotic disease in animals and humans caused by RVF virus and transmitted primarily by mosquitoes and biting flies. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), RVF outbreaks have great public health and economic impact, with up to 90% mortality in lambs and approximately 10% in adult sheep. Besides small ruminants, RVF affects cattle, camels, and goats and induces abortion storms and neonatal mortality at high rates, whereas humans develop severe febrile illness, hemorrhagic fever, or encephalitis in extreme cases. In this study,
