Chronic periodontitis induces cognitive decline in young adult mice.

PURPOSE: This study investigated whether chronic periodontitis induces cognitive impairment in young adult mice and examined the mechanisms underlying periodontitis-associated cognitive decline. METHODS: Chronic periodontitis was induced in 4-month-old female C57BL/6N mice by bilateral ligature placement around the maxillary molars. Learning and memory were assessed using the Morris water maze (MWM) and novel object recognition tests at 4 and 8 weeks after ligation. At 2 and 12 weeks post-ligation, tissues from the brain, including the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, as well as the trigemi

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis rehabilitation management and non-pharmacological symptomatic treatment: A review.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), such as semaglutide, are widely used in the treatment of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity. These medications primarily function by enhancing insulin secretion; however, emerging evidence suggests that the effects extend beyond metabolic regulation. In this issue of the JCI, Farokhnia et al. evaluated the effects of GLP-1RAs alongside another T2D treatment, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4Is), on alcohol consumption in humans and preclinical models. In humans, GLP1-RAs, but not DPP-4Is, were associated

Versatile Bacillus Serine Proteases: Catalysts for Innovation in Industry, Medicine, and Environmental Sustainability.

INTRODUCTION: Patellar dislocation in children and adolescents, particularly habitual and congenital types, is a challenging condition that can cause significant functional impairment and long-term morbidity if untreated. Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is a critical structure in stabilizing the patella, and its reconstruction has been widely attempted in clinical practice using various tissue autografts. The same has been extensively published for adults; however, not many studies have been published in pediatric patients with habitual patellofemoral instability using the iliotibial ban

Non-surgical periodontal treatment improves mitochondrial bioenergetics in circulating immune cells of patients with chronic periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic periodontitis (CP) is an inflammatory disease associated with local and systemic oxidative stress and leads to mitochondrial homeostasis disruption. Although non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) has been proved to reduce the bacterial load and inflammation, the mechanisms underlying its effects on mitochondrial function and systemic redox balance remain poorly understood. METHODS: Eighty patients with CP underwent NSPT. Clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical parameters were evaluated at baseline and 12 weeks after therapy. Mitochondrial redox status, membrane poten

One-year survival and soft tissue aesthetics of immediately placed implants with immediate provisional crowns for maxillary incisors in patients with or without chronic peri-apical periodontitis: a retrospective study.

Tooth loss in the aesthetic zone, particularly of a maxillary incisor, can substantially affect function, appearance, and patient well-being. Immediate implant placement with provisionalization is widely used, but is traditionally limited to non-inflamed extraction sites. This retrospective cohort study compared the 1-year outcomes of immediately placed dental implants replacing a maxillary incisor in patients with and without chronic peri-apical periodontitis. Clinical records of patients treated between January 2019 and December 2022 were reviewed. Outcome variables included implant survival

The expression profile and clinical relevance of miR-125a-5p in individuals with chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic periodontitis is a prevalent inflammatory disease, and miR-125a-5p's role in its pathogenesis remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We examined the clinical significance and mechanisms of miR-125a-5p in chronic periodontitis by testing two hypotheses: (1) miR-125a-5p expression is altered in chronic periodontitis and correlates with clinical indicators; (2) miR-125a-5p regulates periodontal ligament fibroblast (PDLF) functions by targeting specific genes, contributing to disease pathogenesis. METHOD: Pearson correlation analysis assessed the association between miR-125a-5p expressi

Red Complex Bacteria as a Hidden Cause of Chronic Lung Abscess: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Common oral pathogens such as Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia, which form biofilms in the periodontal pockets, are classified together as Red Complex bacteria in Socransky's subgingival cluster model and are key pathogenic bacteria in periodontitis. Oral pathogens play a critical role in pulmonary infections, particularly in the pathogenesis of lung abscesses. Lung abscesses caused by Red Complex bacteria have rarely been described; to our knowledge, few cases have been reported to date. CASE REPORT We present the first documented case of chro

Therapeutic potency and the related mechanism of deinoxanthin in experimental animal and cell models of periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to the destruction of periodontal tissue, ultimately resulting in tooth loss. Studies have aimed to develop biomaterials that effectively prevent inflammatory responses and oxidative stress in the progression of periodontitis, without adverse side effects. Here, we explored whether Deinococcus radiodurans-derived deinoxanthin (DEIX) protects against alveolar bone loss and connective tissue degradation in an experimental rat model of periodontitis and investigated the related mechanisms using human-derived periodontal ligament cells (hP
