Cemental tear - a series of 14 cases of surgical periodontal treatments with a follow-up of up to ten years.

Cemental tear is a relatively uncommon condition with low awareness among dentists. It can mimic other periodontal diseases as well as endodontic disease, and it should be part of the differential diagnosis. The total number of cases reported worldwide is still low and knowledge on conservative treatment prognosis is poor. This case series aims to report retrospectively the long-term results of teeth with cemental tear treated consecutively with periodontal surgery. Patients were managed between the years 2012-2023 in a specialist clinic in the north of Sweden. The treatment consisted of perio

Physically Cross-Linked DNA Hydrogel-Based Sustained Cytokine Delivery for In Situ Diabetic Alveolar Bone Rebuilding.

The development of a biodegradable and shape-adaptable bioscaffold that can enhance local cytokine retention and bioactivity is essential for the application of immunotherapy in periodontal diseases. Here, we report a biodegradable, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic ILGel that uses a physically cross-linked DNA hydrogel as a soft bioscaffold for the long-term sustained release of cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) to accelerate diabetic alveolar bone rebuilding. Porous microstructures of ILGel favored the encapsulation of IL-10 and maintained IL-10 bioactivity for at least 7 days. ILGel can be gr

The study of genetic predisposition on periodontitis and peri-implantitis.

BACKGROUND: Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis cases increase in number with the increase of implant applications. Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis are defined as inflammatory diseases with inflammation and loss in soft and hard tissue, similar to the other periodontal diseases. As observed in many diseases, genetic predisposition factors also affect the progress of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. AIM: This study examines if there is any solid genetic predisposition causing periodontitis and peri-implantitis formation in Turkish patients. PATIENTS & METHODS: In order

Emerging Role of MicroRNA-200 Family in Dentistry.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-coding RNAs ~22 nucleotides in length, which have been shown to participate in various biological processes. As one of the most researched miRNAs, the miR-200 family has been found to regulate several factors that are associated with the epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cancer stem cells (CSCs) behavior. In this review, we briefly summarize the background of the miR-200 family and their implication in various dental diseases. We focus on the expression changes, biological functions, and clinical significance of the miR-200 family in oral canc

Oral Microbiota Features in Subjects with Down Syndrome and Periodontal Diseases: A Systematic Review.

Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder associated with early-onset periodontitis and other periodontal diseases (PDs). The present work aimed to systematically review the scientific literature reporting studies in vivo on oral microbiota features in subjects with DS and related periodontal health and to highlight any correlation and difference with subjects not affected by DS, with and without PDs. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane were searched for relevant studies in May 2021. The participants were subjects affected by Down syndrome (DS) with and without periodontal diseases; the

Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oils from Citrus aurantifolia leaves and fruit peel against oral pathogenic bacteria.

Tooth decay is a major public health problem which affects a large number of people in several countries. Even though more than 700 bacterial species have been detected in the oral cavity, Streptococcus and Lactobacillus stand out as the genera that cause tooth decay and other periodontal diseases. In this study, essential oils from Citrus aurantifolia leaves (CL-EO) and fruit peel (CP-EO) were obtained by hydrodistillation by a Clevenger-type apparatus whereas their chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrome

Immunohistochemical analysis of the gingiva with periodontitis of type I plasminogen deficiency compared to gingiva with gingivitis and periodontitis and healthy gingiva.

OBJECTIVE: Type I plasminogen deficiency (Plgdef) is an uncommon chronic inflammation of mucous membranes. Gingival enlargements usually proceed with progressive periodontal destruction and tooth-loss. Plasmin(ogen)-independent enzymatic mechanisms for fibrin clearance have already been discussed in the literature. Our primary objective was to verify, immunohistochemically, the occurrence of different enzymatic factors involved in tissue breakdown of inflamed compared to healthy gingiva. Secondly, we tried to find out, if these patients have a similar microbiological profile to the patients wi

Effects of Lactobacillus reuteri-derived biosurfactant on the gene expression profile of essential adhesion genes (gtfB, gtfC and ftf) of Streptococcus mutans.

BACKGROUND: Streptococci are the main causative agents in plaque formation and mutans streptococci are the principle etiological agent of dental plaque and caries. The process of biofilm formation is a step-wise process, starting with adhesion of planktonic cells to the surfaces. It is now a well known fact that expression of glucosyltransferases (gtfs) and fructosyltransferase (ftf) genes play a critical role in the initial adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to the tooth surface, which results in the formation of dental plaques and consequently caries and other periodontal diseases. A graphene/zinc oxide nanocomposite film protects dental implant surfaces against cariogenic Streptococcus mutans.

Oral biofilms play a crucial role in the development of dental caries and other periodontal diseases. Streptococcus mutans is one of the primary etiological agents in dental caries. Implant systems are regularly employed to replace missing teeth. Oral biofilms accumulate on these implants and are the chief cause of dental implant failure. In the present study, the potential of graphene/zinc oxide nanocomposite (GZNC) against the cariogenic properties of Streptococcus mutans was explored and the anti-biofilm behaviour of artificial acrylic teeth surfaces coated with GZNC was examined. Oral and dental health of non-institutionalized elderly people in Spain.

With aging of the populations, the oral health and hygiene of elderly people has become an important public health issue. In this cross-sectional study we investigated the prevalence of tooth decay and other periodontal diseases in a representative cohort of 480 non-institutionalized adults ≥65 years from the province of Valencia, Spain. Using a World Health Organization standard for an adult oral survey methodology, we obtained data on remnant teeth with the decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index, a Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPTIN), attachment loss, and temporo-m

The PFA-100: a potential rapid screening tool for the assessment of platelet dysfunction.

Osteoporosis is a condition associated with decreased bone strength and an increased fracture risk. It may be defined based on bone mineral density (BMD) with a T-score at the hip or spine of less than -2.5 standard deviations in young healthy individuals or from an osteoporotic fracture (i.e. a fracture occurring after low-energy trauma or no apparent trauma). Risk factors predisposing to fractures include: increasing age; female gender; low BMD; a prior fragility fracture; a family history of fragility fractures; low bodyweight; lack of estrogen in women (i.e. post menopause); corticosteroid

Beyond the specific plaque hypothesis: are highly leukotoxic strains of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans a paradigm for periodontal pathogenesis?

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a facultative anaerobe implicated in a variety of periodontal diseases. Its presence is most closely associated with localized juvenile periodontitis (LIP), although the exact role of the organism in this and other periodontal diseases is not entirely clear. While A. actinomycetemcomitans produces several different putative virulence factors, the most widely studied is the leukotoxin. The leukotoxin selectively kills polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages in vitro, constituting the host's first line of defense. Interestingly, even though all strain

Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis.

Necrotizing periodontal diseases are unique in their clinical presentation and course. Data suggest that the etiology and pathogenesis of necrotizing periodontal diseases may also be distinctive from other periodontal diseases. Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is a type of necrotizing periodontal disease in which the necrosis is limited to the gingival tissues. Three specific clinical characteristics must be present to diagnose NUG, pain (usually of rapid onset) interdental necrosis, and bleeding. Epidemiological and prospective clinical studies have found an altered ability to cope wit
