BACKGROUND: Gingival tissue enlargement is a common side effect of antiepileptic medications (e.g. phenytoin and sodium valproate), immunosuppressing drugs (e.g. cyclosporine) and calcium channel blockers (e.g. nifedipine, verapamil, amlodipine) (Murakami et al. 2018, Clin Periodontol 45:S17-S27, 2018). The clinical and histological appearances of lesions caused by these drugs are indistinguishable from one another (Murakami et al. 2018, Clin Periodontol 45:S17-S27, 2018). Drug-induced gingival enlargement is rarely seen in edentulous patients.

Idiopathic gingival overgrowth can present itself as a part of syndrome or as an isolated entity. This is a case report of a massive gingival enlargement in a 12-year-old female child with nonsyndromic gingival fibromatosis, which was treated by multidisciplinary approach involving surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation and at the same time instilling psychological benefit.

Enamel renal syndrome (ERS) or so-called amelogenesis imperfecta type IG is a very rare disorder characterized by the triad of amelogenesis imperfecta, gingival enlargement and nephrocalcinosis. It is caused by biallelic mutations in the FAM20A gene. Herein, we report two unrelated patients with ERS. Our patients presented with the characteristic features of the syndrome, and amelogenesis imperfecta and gingival hyperplasia were the main complaint. Strikingly, they both had long face, thick lips, notched upper central incisors, and thick alveolar ridge which have never been reported before in

INTRODUCTION: Gingival enlargement (GE) due to anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) shows a high prevalence rate. However, lamotrigine, a newer AED, has not shown to induce GE. The present case report describes a rare case of GE in a patient with epilepsy under lamotrigine therapy for the past 3 years.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, successful management of lamotrigine-influenced GE in a 24-year-old patient with epilepsy by gingivectomy followed by stringent oral hygiene protocol is presented.
CONCLUSION: The present case report suggests that, even this newer AED can cause GE and the oral hygiene

Drugs are being prescribed with more frequency and in higher quantities. A serious adverse drug event from prescribed medications constitutes 2.4% to 16.2% of all hospital admissions. Many of the adverse drug events present intraorally or periorally in isolation or as a clinical symptom of a systemic effect. Clinical recognition and treatment of adverse drug events are important to increase patient adherence, manage drug therapy, or detect early signs of potentially serious outcomes. Oral manifestations of commonly prescribed medications include gingival enlargement, oral hyperpigmentation, or

OBJECTIVES: Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is an uncommon, inherited condition with slow and progressive fibrous hyperplasia of the gingiva. Due to its association with mastication, speech, and occlusion problems, early diagnosis is important. We sought to summarize the available data regarding the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of children with HGF (< 18 years).
METHODS: A systematic literature review of the MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases was conducted with respect to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement (end-o

Development of gingival enlargement and periodontitis is described in a young dwarf mongoose. Repeated treatments resulted in gingival resection and histologic evaluation however gingival enlargement was ultimately responsive to extraction of associated teeth. In cases such as these, surgical extraction of teeth associated with severe recurrent gingival enlargement should be considered to avoid the stress and risk of repeated immobilizations.

Wiesenfeld described orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) as a group of noncaseating granulomatous disorders affecting the different parts of the body including oral and maxillofacial region, which can have variable etiology. The involvement of oral and maxillofacial region can be exclusive or primary before the involvement of other organs. OFG is a multifactorial clinicopathologic disorder, and its clinical manifestation mimics the various systemic conditions making its diagnosis tough for a dentist. Delay in diagnosis and evaluation of OFG may cause indurated, swollen lips that may compromise cosm

Gingival fibromatosis (GF) is a rare condition of fibrous enlargement of the gingivae causing functional or aesthetic problems. We report a case of localized GF in a 51-year-old healthy male patient who presented in our department with localized gingival enlargement. We performed gingivectomy and restored the defect with a novel local transpositional mucosal flap with excellent functional and aesthetic results. This type of intervention is accompanied by short surgical time, provides predictable results, and should be considered in adult patients with large defects from sizable lesions.

In the modern world, men and women are very much concerned about their esthetic appearance. The gingival perspective of esthetics is more often concerned with the soft tissue envelope surrounding the teeth. Gingival enlargement/overgrowth is numerous in nature and often poses a clinical challenge by altering the function, resulting in poor oral health of an individual. Tacrolimus, an immunosuppressive drug, has been broadly used for organ-transplant rejection. It results in much less severe hypertension, hypertrichosis and gingival overgrowth compared to cyclosporine and calcium channel blocke

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a proliferative fibrous lesion causing severe gingival enlargement, affecting the esthetics, as well as posing various periodontal problems. This case report addresses the diagnosis and treatment of one such rare case of HGF where the patient presented with generalized diffuse gingival enlargement involving the maxillary and mandibular arches extending on the buccal and lingual/palatal surfaces and covering the incisal/occlusal third of the tooth, resulting in altered esthetics, difficulty in speech, and mastication. Gingivectomy was carried out in all

Gingival enlargement, although frequently encountered in clinical settings, is rarely associated with systemic diseases or syndromes. Among the diverse pathological conditions of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1), minor manifestations in the orofacial region are occasionally overlooked. Herein, the authors present an unusual case of gingival neurofibroma in a patient with NF-1 associated with characteristic osseous defects in the alveolus in the long-term course of 17 years from the first examination.A 5-year-old boy with NF-1 was referred for the evaluation of gingival enlargement in the poster

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis (GF), also known as gingivomatosis, is a rare condition in childhood, with an unknown aetiology. The oral manifestations of the condition are varied and depend on the severity and age of involvement. This paper describe the case of a 5-year-old male child with extensive gingival enlargement covering almost all the maxillary and mandibular teeth resulted in difficulty with speech, mastication and poor aesthetics. Clinical and radiographic examination along with haematological investigations ruled out any systemic association. The case was managed with convention

Enamel renal syndrome is a unique syndrome associated with kidney agenesis associated with kidney agenesis, amelogenesis imperfecta, and gingival hyperplasia. The prevalence rate of this rare syndrome is <1/1,000,000. A 17-year-old male patient came to the department of periodontics, with a chief complaint of dislodged crown in the anterior teeth region. On clinical examination, the patient had teeth with mottled enamel and gingival enlargement. The orthopantomograph and gingival biopsy revealed pulpal calcification and gingival calcification, respectively. Furthermore, the renal ultrasonograp

Gingival overgrowth (GO) includes gingival enlargement and hyperplasia and may be induced by certain drugs, including calcium channel blockers (CCBs), particularly first-generation CCBs. However, to date, only few cases of GO induced by second- or third-generation CCBs have been reported. The present study reports on a case of a 48-year-old diabetic male who was admitted to the First Hospital of Jilin University (Changchun, China) due to poor blood glucose control. This patient was diagnosed with GO. Review of the patient's medical history revealed diagnoses of type 2 diabetes and hypertension

Gingival enlargements (GEs) can be caused by local, systemic diseases or drugs. Three molecules can be responsible of GEs: ciclosporin, phenytoin and calcium channel blockers (CCBs). We report the case of a 56-year-old male treated by Amlodipine, a CCB, for hypertension for many years and who recently developed a severe GE affecting both mandibular and maxillary arches inducing dental malposition. The histological examination showed non-specific inflammation with a predominance of lymphocytes. Amlodipine was suspected and suspended in agreement with his physician. One month later, the enlargem

Gingival overgrowth is a major and frequent unwanted effect accompanying the chronic usage of antihypertensive, anticonvulsant, and immunosuppressant drugs. The expression and the severity of this tissue-specific condition are influenced by a variety of factors, mainly drug and periodontal variables. Such increased volume of gingiva may compromise normal oral functions, aesthetics in addition to the patients' ability to practice optimal oral hygiene. The management of gingival overgrowth includes nonsurgical approach, surgical approach, or both of them for severe cases of gingival overgrowth a

Drug-induced gingival overgrowth is a condition caused by side effects of treatment with one of three types of drugs: phenytoin (used in epilepsy treatment), cyclosporine A (used in transplantology after allogenic organ transplants) and calcium channel blockers (used in the treatment of hypertension). Gingival overgrowth leads to inflammation within the gums and periodontium and can amplify the existing periodontal disease leading to tooth loss. Patients who have undergone kidney transplant are given immunosuppressants to prevent transplant rejection and mostly it is accompanied with calcium c
