Nonsurgical Management of Drug-induced Gingival Enlargement in a Young Adolescent with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Drug-induced gingival enlargement represents a well-documented adverse effect of medications utilized in treating systemic conditions. This case reports a 13-year-old female with chronic kidney disease and hypertension who was under the medication of atenolol and amlodipine for 5 years. Despite well-controlled blood pressure, the child developed a gingival enlargement, which is a documented side effect of amlodipine. The management included counseling, oral hygiene maintenance, full-arch scaling, and transition to alternate antihypertensive clonidine; the patient was reverted back

Idiopathic Gingival Enlargement: A Report of a Rare Case.

Gingival fibromatosis is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by the progressive enlargement of the gingiva, caused by an increase in subepithelial connective tissue elements. Idiopathic gingival enlargement (IGE) is a diagnosis by exclusion when no causative agent is identified and there is no family history. This case report presents the diagnosis and treatment of a 23-year-old female patient with IGE. The patient reported a generalized diffuse gingival enlargement for the past seven years, with currently extraoral swelling on the right side and difficulty in chewing with tooth m

Unusual co-occurrence of cheilitis granulomatosa and plasma cell gingivitis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Cheilitis granulomatosa (CG) and plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) are uncommon inflammatory conditions affecting the oral regions. CG manifests as chronic lip swelling with granulomatous inflammation, while PCG presents as erythematous gingiva or gingival enlargement linked to hypersensitivity reactions. Their simultaneous occurrence is exceedingly rare, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. METHODS: A 32-year-old woman presented with recurrent upper lip swelling and gingival enlargement. Clinical examination revealed erythematous gingiva with a cobblestone texture and angular

Gingival Enlargements: Clinical Implications.

Gingival enlargements (GEs) are a commonly observed clinical entity in dentistry. The etiology maybe local, systemic, or a combination. Having a good diagnostic certainty of the type of GE helps the clinician to not only manage the entity locally but facilitates a thorough workup of the systemic factors. This article offers an in-depth look at the diagnosis and subsequent clinical management strategies for various forms of GE. It emphasizes the importance of accurately recognizing the diverse clinical presentations of GE, guided by its etiopathogenesis, clinical features, and other investigati

Localized gingival enlargements: clinical, histopathological and surgical evaluation in five cases.

BACKGROUND: Localized gingival enlargements (GEs) are frequently encountered reactive lesions with various etiologies, including chronic irritation, trauma, systemic conditions, hormonal influences, and medication use. Despite their benign nature, these lesions can significantly affect oral function and aesthetics and may occasionally mimic neoplastic processes. This case series aims to present the clinical and histopathological (HP) features of five patients with localized GEs, describe different surgical approaches including scalpel and diode laser excision, and report short-term clinical ou

Drug-Induced Gingival Overgrowth Associated With Cyclosporine Therapy: A Case Report of a 23-Year Periodontal Follow-Up in a Heart Transplant Recipient.

Drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) is a common adverse effect of cyclosporine therapy, which is widely used as an immunosuppressive agent in solid organ transplant recipients. This case report describes the 23-year follow-up of a male patient with a history of orthotopic heart transplantation, performed two years prior to his first dental visit in 2002, who developed DIGO under long-term cyclosporine therapy. At the initial periodontal evaluation, a diagnosis of localized Stage I, Grade A periodontitis associated with gingivitis was made, and nonsurgical mechanical debridement, scaling an

Acute myeloid leukemia presenting with gingival enlargement masked by a normal complete blood count: A case of delayed diagnosis and literature review.

RATIONALE: Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a lethal hematological malignancy whose oral manifestations are frequently misdiagnosed as inflammatory periodontal disease. This case exemplifies the diagnostic challenges associated with AML, particularly when initial blood counts appear normal and conventional periodontal treatment proves ineffective. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 45-year-old male patient presented with a 3-month history of progressive gingival bleeding, swelling, and occlusal discomfort. DIAGNOSES: The preliminary hematological analysis yielded no significant findings. Not with standing

Intraoral Giant Cell Fibroma in a Young Patient with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex: A Case Report of a Rare Occurrence.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by multisystem hamartomas. Oral manifestations in the form of gingival enlargement, enamel pitting, and fibromas are a common finding. The most common form of fibromas reported in these patients has been angiofibromas, predominantly located on the anterior gingival mucosa. Here, we report a case of an intraoral giant cell fibroma, which, to the best of our knowledge, has not been reported to date. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 12-year-old girl, prediagnosed with TSC, presented with a soft tissue swelling origi

Prevalence of Amlodipine-induced gingival enlargement in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Administration of certain drugs such as anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, and calcium channel blockers leads to well-known sequalae of gingival enlargement. Apart from esthetic consequences, gingival enlargement also hinders proper oral hygiene and may be painful for the patient. Determination of primary etiology and subsequent treatment for the same is pre-requisite in the management of gingival enlargement. Therefore, this study was intended to determine the prevalence of gingival enlargement in patients under amlodipine therapy in a tertiary care hospital. METHODS: A descr

Gingival overgrowth approached using recent mechanical and laser technologies: A case report.

Gingival enlargement is a side effect of different drug classes, with calcium channel blockers being among the most often cited examples. Most often accompanied by a disruption in the oral biofilm, this form of gingival overgrowth, with histological signs of hyperplasia and hypertrophy, becomes a chronic inflammatory condition with the oral biofilm a primary cause. This periodontal disease is now classified as 'dental biofilm-induced gingivitis', and its preferred name is drug-influenced gingival expansion. The present study presented the case of a patient with gingival enlargement while being

The Management of Drug-Induced Gingival Enlargement in a Patient With Preexisting Periodontitis.

Antihypertensives such as amlodipine, which is a family of calcium channel blockers (CCBs), possess a limitation by causing gingival enlargement on long-term use. Gingival enlargement hinders the patient's oral hygiene maintenance and causes more plaque accumulation and inflammation. The severity of the condition is dependent on dose and duration. When untreated, this leads to functional and esthetic disabilities. This is a case report of amlodipine-induced gingival enlargement in a young, chronic periodontitis patient who was under 5 mg of amlodipine for six months. Upon diagnosis, the patien

Zimmermann-Laband syndrome-associated hereditary gingival fibromatosis.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is an uncommon slow-growing fibrous overgrowth characterized by connective tissue accumulation. It presents as an isolated feature or as a manifestation of any syndrome. Various syndromes associated with HGF are inherited by autosomal dominant/recessive/X-linked traits. Zimmermann-Laband syndrome (ZLS) is a rare, autosomal dominant inherited disease manifested with gingival fibromatosis (GF), nose and ears abnormalities, and hypoplastic/dysplastic nails or terminal phalanges of hand and feet. Although the pattern of inheritance was found to be both autoso

Giant cell angiofibroma of gingiva in tuberous sclerosis complex: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare, complex genetic disorder characterized by hamartomas and neoplastic lesions in various organ systems. With the development of radiology and gene testing, the diagnostic criteria for TSC were updated in 2012 at the International Consensus Conference. Intraoral fibromas have long been associated with TSC. However, the incidence of giant cell angiofibroma (GCA) in TSC patients is extremely rare. Here, we report the first case of GCA in the gingival tissue of a patient with TSC. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old woman first visited the Depart

Chronic Inflammatory Gingival Enlargement: A Case Report.

Gingival enlargement can be referred to as an increased size of the gingival tissues. It might have originated because of inflammation, induced by certain drugs, linked to generalized illness, malignant, or pseudo enlargement, based on its etiology and pathogenesis. Enlargements may be widespread, papillary, or marginal, depending on the location. It affects the patient's masticatory, functional, aesthetic, and psychological health. Diagnosing the condition and its underlying cause through a detailed history is the mainstay for management. Diagnosis is based on a careful clinical examination i
