Do sex hormone imbalances contribute to idiopathic condylar resorption?

Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) is an aggressive form of temporomandibular joint disease that most frequently presents in adolescent girls during the pubertal growth spurt. Although numerous studies have indicated that the etiopathogenesis of ICR may be related to estrogen deficiency, the decisive role of estrogens remains controversial, and other sex hormone disturbances have not yet been investigated in this regard. Therefore, the aim of this study was to ascertain the role of serum estrogen levels and also the roles of other sex hormones in the pathogenesis of ICR. Ninety-four ICR pati

Lipofilling of the lower eyelids: A craniofacial tool to postpone the facial advancement in craniofacial syndromes.

PURPOSE: Many genetic diseases are responsible for a defect in the growth of the maxilla. Craniofacial syndromes such as Crouzon syndrome or Apert syndrome are typically associated with a major hypoplasia in the midface responsible for exophthalmos, leading to palpebral malocclusion and frequent corneal complications. Several treatments have been used to manage ocular protection in craniofacial syndromes such as tarsorrhaphy, a fronto-orbital advancement and/or a Lefort III osteotomy with or without distraction. We describe a new approach as a waiting solution to relieve exophthalmos: the auto

Treacher Collins syndrome: Orthodontic treatment with mandibular distraction osteogenesis and orthognathic surgery.

Interdisciplinary treatment for patients with Treacher Collins syndrome is challenging because of the rarity of the condition and the wide variety of phenotypic expression. A 23-year-old male was diagnosed with Treacher Collins syndrome with a history of severe obstructive sleep apnea. He presented with a Pruzansky-Kaban classification grade I mandible, skeletal type II pattern with a hyperdivergent mandibular plane, severe convex profile, and Class II malocclusion with a missing mandibular incisor. Improvement of facial esthetics was achieved by a combination of orthodontics, mandibular distr

Treatment decision-making for a post-traumatic malocclusion in an elderly patient: A case report.

Traumatic dental injuries in elderly patients are a rising trend due to demographic and social changes of the population. Older dentulous patients in good health have become increasingly common. The development of a post-traumatic malocclusion is a common sequela resulting from mandibular condyle fracture, as in the case reported in this paper. The decision-making process led the authors to rule out conservative treatment options and to perform orthognathic surgery on an 81-year-old patient, an unprecedented report in the literature. At one-year follow-up, prophylactic therapy, a specific surg

Identification of malocclusion risk factors after closed treatment of condylar fractures using a novel three-dimensional computed tomography approach.

The condyle is the most common site of mandibular fracture. In the present study, an attempt was made to utilize three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) images to evaluate mandibular condyle fractures and identify prognostic indicators of malocclusion after closed treatment. Accurate morphometric measurements were performed using 3D-CT images obtained before trauma, after trauma, and after healing. Morphometry revealed significant differences in loss of ramus height (LRH) and lateral movement length in patients with malocclusion, and significant LRH differences in patients with other max

Efficacy and morbidity of biodegradable versus titanium osteosyntheses in orthognathic surgery: A systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

Titanium osteosynthesis is currently the gold standard in orthognathic surgery. Use of biodegradable osteosyntheses avoids removal of plates/screws in a second operation. This systematic review aimed to assess the efficacy and morbidity of biodegradable vs. titanium osteosyntheses in orthognathic surgery (PROSPERO CRD42018086477). Patients with syndromic disorder(s) and/or cleft lip/palate were excluded. Randomised, prospective and retrospective controlled studies were searched for in nine databases (February 2021). The time periods perioperative, short-term, intermediate, long-term, and overa

Mandibular Subcondylar Fracture: Improved Functional Outcomes in Selected Patients with Open Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Subcondylar fractures represent 25 to 35 percent of all mandibular fractures, yet the treatment paradigm has remained controversial. Closed treatment relies on the plasticity of the condyle head during recovery, whereas open treatment is challenging and risks facial nerve injury. Perioperative, functional, and patient-reported outcomes were measured to compare methods of open versus closed treatment of subcondylar fractures. METHODS: Selected displaced subcondylar fracture cases with open (open reduction and internal fixation of subcondylar fracture with maxillomandibular fixation
