[Miniscrews during the retention phase: indications, therapeutic means and effects].

Even if miniscrews are mainly used in the active phase, their uses during the contention have been reported for a few years either by installation of miniscrews de novo or by taking advantage of miniscrews inserted during the active phase. The objective of this article is to describe the uses - reported in the literature - of miniscrews during the retention phase. We have conducted a research from the database PubMed with keywords associations. Nineteen articles were found with three indications: to temporarily replace toothlessness while awaiting the final prosthetic solution at the end of gr

Influence of lingual plate fracture pattern on remodelling site during the healing process of sagittal split ramus osteotomy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether differences in the pattern of the lingual plate split in sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) affect the remodelling of the split site. Sixty-one patients with mandibular prognathism (122 sides) underwent SSRO. Computed tomography (CT) was performed at 1 week and 1 year after SSRO. Bone splits were classified according to the lingual split scale (LSS) and the lateral bone cut end (LBCE) by evaluating CT images at 1 week. The remodelling at the split sites was evaluated by superimposing the CT images obtained at 1 week and 1 year. Regarding

Individualized 3D-Printed Bone-Anchored Maxillary Protraction Device for Growth Modification in Skeletal Class III Malocclusion.

Bone-anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP) is effective for skeletal Class III malocclusion. However, infection, screw and plate loosening, and device failures occur with conventional plates. This pilot prospective study analyzed the feasibility of individualized BAMP using preoperative simulation and 3D titanium printing in patients referred by the orthodontic department for four BAMP miniplates. Preoperative cone beam computed tomography data were analyzed using CAD/CAM software to fabricate the individualized 3D-printed BAMP device. The customized plates were printed using selective laser s

Orthodontic treatment for posterior crossbites.

BACKGROUND: A posterior crossbite occurs when the top back teeth bite inside the bottom back teeth. The prevalence of posterior crossbite is around 4% and 17% of children and adolescents in Europe and America, respectively. Several treatments have been recommended to correct this problem, which is related to such dental issues as tooth attrition, abnormal development of the jaws, joint problems, and imbalanced facial appearance. Treatments involve expanding the upper jaw with an orthodontic appliance, which can be fixed (e.g. quad-helix) or removable (e.g. expansion plate). This is the third u

Juvenile/Adolescent Idiopatic Scoliosis and Rapid Palatal Expansion. A Pilot Study.

The question of whether orthodontic therapy by means of rapid palatal expansion (RPE) affects the spine during development is important in clinical practice. RPE is an expansive, fixed therapy conducted with heavy forces to separate the midpalatal suture at a rate of 0.2-0.5 mm/day. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of RPE on the curves of the spine of juvenile/adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients. Eighteen patients under orthopedic supervision for juvenile/adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and independently treated with RPE for orthodontic reasons were included in the study

Effects of Invisalign (G5) with virtual bite ramps for skeletal deep overbite malocclusion correction in adults.

PURPOSE: Intravenous regional anesthesia (IVRA) using lidocaine provides effective localized analgesia but its duration is limited. The mechanism by which dexmedetomidine enhances lidocaine IVRA is unclear but may involve modulation of hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lidocaine IVRA with varying dexmedetomidine concentrations was performed in the tails of Sprague-Dawley rats. Tail-flick and tail-clamping tests assessed IVRA analgesia and anesthesia efficacy and duration. Contributions of α2 adrenergic receptors and HCN channels were ev

Fibromyalgia Pain and Depression: An Update on the Role of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal pain of different parts of the body, which is also associated with fatigue, lack of sleep, cognition deficits, family history, gender bias, and other disorders such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is generally initiated after trauma, surgery, infection, or stress. Fibromyalgia often coexists with several other conditions or disorders such as temporomandibular joint disorders, bowel and bladder syndrome, anxiety, depression, headaches, and interstitial cystitis. While there is no permanent cure for fibromyalgia, some interventions are available w

Initiation and progression of dental-stimulated temporomandibular joints osteoarthritis.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ), a site that is often impacted by osteoarthritis (OA), is biomechanically linked with dental occlusion. Tissue responses in TMJ condyle to biomechanical stimulation could be investigated by intervention of the dental occlusion in animals. Unilateral anterior crossbite, an experimental malocclusion, has been demonstrated to induce TMJ-OA lesions, showing primarily as enhanced cartilage calcification and subchondral cortical bone formation at the osteochondral interface, causing the osteochondral interface thickening and stiffening. The changed interface would worse

Cell-mediated injectable blend hydrogel-BCP ceramic scaffold for in situ condylar osteochondral repair.

The existing approaches for healing mandibular condylar osteochondral defects, which are prevalent in temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), are sparse and not reparative. To address this, regenerative medicine in situ has transpired as a potential therapeutic solution as it can effectively regenerate composite tissues. Herein, injectable self-crosslinking thiolated hyaluronic acid (HA-SH)/type I collagen (Col I) blend hydrogel and BCP ceramics combined with rabbit bone mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs)/chondrocytes were used to fabricate a new bi-layer scaffold to simulate specific structure

Impact of Fibromyalgia Phenotype in Temporomandibular Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence suggests that central nervous system amplification, similar to that seen in fibromyalgia (FM), contributes to the pain experience in a subset of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS: In this prospective observational study, patients with TMD completed the 2011 FM survey questionnaire, a surrogate measure of "centralized" pain. The influence of centralized pain on TMD pain, dysfunction, and disability was assessed dichotomously by determining the incidence of FM-positive cases in the sample and by using FM survey scores as a continuous measure

Long-term effect of bilateral anterior elevation of occlusion on the temporomandibular joints.

OBJECTIVE: Incisors tubed prosthesis with bilateral anterior elevation (BAE) relation had been reported to stimulate the proliferative response in the mandibular condylar cartilage of mice, thus the prosthetic occlusion elevation had been proposed to treat cartilage degeneration. Currently, we aimed to detect the long-term effect of BAE on temporomandibular joints (TMJs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve 6-week-old female mice were assigned to age-matched control and BAE groups (n = 6). Micro-CT images and the macro- and micro-morphology of the mandibular condyles were analyzed at 29 weeks. RES

Temporomandibular Myofascial Pain Syndrome-Aetiology and Biopsychosocial Modulation. A Narrative Review.

This review elaborates on the aetiology, diagnosis, and treatment of temporomandibular (TMD) myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) regulated by psychosocial factors. MPS impairs functioning in society due to the accompanying pain. Directed and self-directed biopsychosocial profile modulation may be beneficial in the treatment of MPS. Moreover, nutrition is also a considerable part of musculoskeletal system health. A fruit and vegetable diet contributes to a reduction in chronic pain intensity because of its anti-inflammatory influence. Cannabidiol (CBD) oils may also be used in the treatment as they
