Sagittal Skeletal Malocclusions and Sleep Quality in Children Without Orofacial Dysfunction.

This study examined whether sagittal skeletal malocclusions influence sleep quality in children independently of orofacial functional disorders. A total of 164 children (7-13 y) without orofacial dysfunction were classified as class I, II, or III according to cephalometric analysis. Sleep quality was assessed with the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). For each group, age, family income, SNB angle (mandibular position), SN-GoGn and FMA angles (vertical dimensions), and 2D airway measurements were compared. Correlations between CSHQ scores, SNB, and vertical dimensions were also eval

Association of anterior crossbite and open bite with the number of remaining teeth: A cross-sectional study from the Tohoku medical megabank cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Malocclusion, particularly anterior crossbite and open bite, contributes to abnormal occlusal stress distribution, potentially leading to tooth loss. We examined the association between anterior malocclusions and tooth loss-related outcomes in a large-scale, community-based sample of Japanese adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study targeted 17,349 participants aged ≥ 40 years from the Tohoku Medical Megabank Cohort Study (2013-2017). Based on overjet and overbite, participants were classified into normal occlusion (n = 16,790), anterior open bite (n = 177), anter

Assessment of pre-treatment diagnostic characteristics in patients with borderline bimaxillary protrusion: A pilot comparison of bi-jaw distalization versus premolar extraction.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bimaxillary protrusion often seek orthodontic treatment to improve facial aesthetics. Treatment planning is complex and may involve premolar extractions or bi-jaw distalization using temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and third molar extractions. Choice of modality is partly subjective, particularly in borderline cases. OBJECTIVE: To assess pre-treatment arch forms, dentoskeletal, and soft-tissue characteristics for guiding treatment selection between bi-jaw distalization and premolar extraction in borderline bimaxillary protrusion. The secondary objective was to com

Effects of rapid palate expansion on body posture and motor functions in children with monolateral posterior crossbite are test and task-related.

Stomatognathic apparatus and the postural system interact through biomechanical chains, whose neuromuscular properties influence both gross and fine motor coordination. To evaluate changes in body posture and motor functions in children with malocclusion who are treated with palatal expanders, 8 right-handed children (6-12 years) with unilateral posterior crossbite were enrolled in this non-randomized pragmatic longitudinal study. Fine motor skills tests, handgrip strength, 3D body posture analysis, electromyography, thermography and stabilometry were performed before and after the treatment w

The Role of Digit- and Pacifier-Sucking Habits on Malocclusion Development in Children: Anterior Open Bite and Posterior Crossbite-A Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Malocclusion is one of the most prevalent oral health concerns in paediatric dentistry, with anterior open bite (AOB) and posterior crossbite (PCB) being among the most common forms. Non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSHs), including digit-sucking habits (DSHs) and pacifier-sucking habits (PSHs), have been linked to malocclusion development. While both habits are known to impact dental and skeletal development, their comparative effects remain unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to determine the difference in the development and prevalence of anterior ope
