Mixed dentition space analysis in a Thai population.

This study produced simple linear regression equations to be used for mixed dentition space analysis for males and females, and sexes pooled in a population living in northeastern Thailand. Measurements of teeth were made to within 0.01 mm on the dental casts of 215 boys and 215 girls (mean age 15.7 years). All dentitions were required to be free of any signs of dental pathology or anomalies. It was found that males had significantly larger teeth than females as represented by summations of mandibular incisor, canine, and premolar widths. ANOVA of regression indicated a close relationship betw

An investigation of the dentition of parents of children with cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to identify whether any dental features in parents of children with cleft lip and palate can be useful as predictors of clefting. METHODS: The dentition of 28 pairs of parents of children with complete unilateral (17) and bilateral (11) cleft lip and palate and 21 pairs of parents of noncleft children were evaluated. Clinical and radiographic examinations were carried out to identify abnormalities of tooth number and morphology. Study cast assessment was undertaken to evaluate incisor relationship, overjet, overbite, intercanine widths, and mesiodi

[Panoramic radiography using an intraoral tube. Method, anatomy, radiography and dosimetry].

BACKGROUND: There are two techniques giving a panoramic view of the dental arch: orthopantomography and intraoral tube panoramic radiography. The last one is not very well known because images, with a characteristic and variable deformity if compared with orthopantomography are not useful for routinary use in dentistry. The poor radiographic and pathologic anatomy knowledge of intraoral tube panoramic radiography, and the slight improvements brought to the method particularly in order to reduce the dose, partly depend on the scant attention given to the method by investigators, and partly on t

[Dental anomalies in some hereditary syndromes observed by the authors].

BACKGROUND: The ectodermal hypohidrotic dysplasia, Marfan and Robinson syndromes are hereditary syndromes. They are characterized by teeth anomalies associated with system anomalies. The purpose of the present study is an analysis of single dental anomaly cases in personally observed syndromes. METHODS: The dental arch radiographs of 8 patients suffering from hereditary syndromes characterized by teeth anomalies have been studied. These dental anomalies have been classified--from an anatomic-clinical viewpoint--as to number (missing/exceeding teeth), shape, position, volume (too much/too litt

An American Board of Orthodontics case report: the nonsurgical orthodontic correction of a Class III malocclusion.

This is a case report of a patient with a skeletal Class III malocclusion and maxillary arch length deficiency. The patient was treated without extraction or surgery by increasing the maxillary arch length. Protraction of the maxillary complex and A point was the result. Favorable growth of both the maxilla and the mandible resulted in a functional Class I occlusion and an improved skeletal relationship. [This case report was presented to the American Board of Orthodontics in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the certification process conducted by the Board.]

Clinical relevance of third permanent molars in relation to crowding after orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dental crowding and the clinical presence or absence of third permanent molar teeth. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients were analysed before and after orthodontic treatment and at least three years after the end of retention. The sample consisted of four groups: subjects whose third permanent molar teeth had erupted into the mouth, were non-erupted, were extracted, and were congenitally absent. Arch Length Discrepancy, Irregularity Index and observer bias were examined. Multivariate analysis of variance with repeated m

[Maxillo-mandibular ++disharmonies].

The maxilla and mandible give the face its proportions and equilibrium, while remaining indissociable from the skull. The harmony of these structures is established according to two planes of reference: the base of the skull in a relationship of cranio-facial interdependence, the dental arch making the occlusal relationship a decisive factor in the concept of facial equilibrium. This occlusal obligation, criterion of normality and stability, confers all of the originality of orthognatic surgery, which must also take into account the periods of cranio-facial growth and oro-facial functions. The

Treatment and postretention changes in dental arch width dimensions--a long-term evaluation of influencing cofactors.

The aim of the present long-term follow-up study of orthodontically treated patients was to analyze postretention changes in arch width dimension and to isolate factors that may serve as predictors of long-term prognosis. Pretreatment, end-of-treatment, and postretention (at least 10 years) models of 226 cases with different malocclusions were used to measure intercanine and intermolar width, arch length, sum of the mesiodistal dimension of the incisors, irregularity index, crowding, molar and canine relationship, overjet, and overbite. To assess the influence of initial and end-of-treatment a

[Maximal force measurements of lip and tongue pressures and their significance for the diagnosis of orofacial dyskinesias].

The functioning of the orofacial muscular system essentially determines the shape of the jaw and of the dental arch as well as the position of the axis of the anterior teeth. Disturbances of the normal functioning can cause anomalies of the position of teeth or malformations of the bone structure. With the help of the newly developed device "Myometer 160" we now have the possibility to measure the intra- and extraoral forces. We examined 107 persons aged 8 to 37 years. The maximal force was measured by ventral tongue pressure, when the lips were pressed against each other and when a brass butt

Conservative multidisciplinary treatment approach in an unusual odontodysplasia.

An unusual case of odontodysplasia is presented, involving both primary and permanent dentition, with oligodontia of permanent teeth and hypoplasia, taurodontism and incomplete eruption of a first permanent molar. In order to improve the patient's appearance, occlusion and function, his intra- and inter-arch relationships were altered. To accomplish this, a multidisciplinary treatment approach was adopted, involving restorative and prosthetic treatments by a pediatric dentist, accompanied by periodontal surgery, endodontics and orthodontics.

An orthodontic and cephalometric study on the results of the combined surgical-orthodontic approach of the protruded premaxilla in bilateral clefts.

The anatomical aberration of the premaxilla in bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) gives rise to many problems. Orthodontic and orthopaedic treatment alone often fail to correct this deformity. In this study, the results of a combined surgical-orthodontic approach were analysed. 22 BCLP-patients, who had undergone an osteotomy of the premaxilla in combination with secondary or tertiary bone grafting, were involved in this study. Two cephalograms were analysed from each patient, one prior to and one after osteotomy. Dental casts were made prior to orthodontic treatment, prior and after osteot

A six-center international study of treatment outcome in patients with clefts of the lip and palate: Part 3. Dental arch relationships.

One hundred and forty-nine dental casts of subjects with complete unilateral clefts of the lip and palate from six European cleft palate centers were assessed by means of the Goslon Yardstick. The Yardstick proved capable of discriminating between the quality of the dental arch relationships between the six centers. Two centers showed especially poor results. Three centers obtained satisfactory results although differing surgical techniques were used in these centers. One of the centers showing satisfactory dental arch relationships employed a more complex and expensive treatment program than

Orthodontic treatment in the mixed dentition for the general dentist.

Mixed dentition treatment is an important subject because early treatment could not only correct the occlusion but also may ensure normal development of the teeth. Proper arch form and dental relationships in the mixed dentition lessen the need for additional orthodontic treatment. The objectives in mixed dentition orthodontic therapy are to correct dental arch irregularities, occlusal and jaw relation abnormalities, and to eliminate functional interferences.

Long-term effect of rapid maxillary expansion studied in one patient with the aid of metallic implants and roentgen stereometry.

The articulatory displacement of maxillary bones during and after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) was studied with metallic implants and roentgen stereometry (RSA) for 3653 days in a girl aged 12 at start of treatment. She had a narrow upper dental arch with anterior crowding and a normal incisor relationship, and a normal sagittal molar relationship with bilateral cross-bite. Three implants were inserted in each maxillary bone and they remained stable in the bones during the 10-year observation period. In the 3-D analysis of the articulatory displacement, the left maxillary bone was studied i

[The effect of passive plates on the arrangement of the alveolar arch segments in unilateral total cheilognathopalatoschisis].

Maxillary alveolar arch morphology was studied from birth to palate repair at the age of 19 months in 24 children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) treated with passive orthopaedic plates (treated children). 18 children with the same defect, who received no orthopaedic treatment, served as controls. The surgical procedures and the age at lip and palate repair were similar. Maxillary alveolar arch morphology was described by 15 linear and five angular measurements. No significant difference was found in total alveolar crest length neither between the cleft and the non-cleft m

[Case report of progenie with a congenitally missing mandibular right incisor].

The female in this case was 9 years and 9 months old at the initial visit with a dental stage of III B. The chief complaint was anterior cross bite. Diagnosis revealed a class III angle at the right side and class I at the left. The ANB angle was -3.0 degrees with mandible shifting to the left side. Tooth size was large, and a lack of space, observed, and 2 was congenitally missing. A chin cap was used for treatment to retract and inhibit mandibular growth. The anterior cross bite was corrected within two months when class I angle molar relationship was achieved and the extraction of midline w

The surgical correction of vertical maxillary excess (long face syndrome).

The surgical correction of vertical maxillary excess is a relatively new technique. Vertical maxillary excess (VME) may exist alone or in combination with a horizontal mandibular deficiency with or without an anterior open bite. The facial contour is characterized by a long, tapering face with anterior and posterior maxillary overgrowth, a narrow alar base, and lip in competence. Cephalometric analysis demonstrates steep mandibular and occlusal planes in relationship to the cranial base, and increase in facial height, and retroposition of the mandible. Evaluation of study models exhibits incre

[Orthodontic studies in children with stunted growth].

Biometrical studies on a group of 43 children with stunted growth showed that stunted growth is associated with smaller dimensions of the upper dental arch. The lower dental arch is not involved. The relationship between the variations in the characteristics under examination are explained with the aid of three basic factors of growth which had been established mathematically. The crown diameters of the permanent teeth are not smaller as in children with normal growth.

A clinical study of the relationship between crowding of teeth, plaque and gingival condition.

A clinical trial was undertaken to assess whether crowded teeth were more likely to accumulate plaque and develop gingivitis than non-crowded teeth. A tooth was considered crowded if it was displaced by 2 mm and/or rotated 15 degrees or more from the normal position in the arch. The material consisted of 50 dental students aged 21 to 32 years. An initial examination comprised assessment of Plaque Index, Gingival Index and pocket depths. After this examination the subjects refrained from using interdental cleaning aids but continued with their normal toothbrushing for 40 days. After re-examinat
