Correlation between maxillary cuspid impaction with available space and anomalies of maxillary lateral incisors.

BACKGROUND: Association of cuspid impaction with adjacent lateral incisor anomalies is under controversy. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between maxillary cuspid impaction with dental anomalies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this in vitro experimental study, the material consisted of pretreatment dental records of 102 patients with at least one palatally or buccally displaced impacted permanent cuspid (palatal and buccal impaction groups). They were matched with a comparison control group of 102 patients having normally erupted maxillary cuspids. Available space, mesiodis

Dental and orthodontic follow-up in nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome patient with odontogenic keratocystic tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCS) is a rare genetic condition affecting multiple organs including the maxillofacial and dental region. The surgical removal of the odontogenic keratocystic tumors (OKT), the high rate of recurrence leads to a iatrogenic tooth loss requiring dental care. The aim of this study is therefore to describe the dental and orthodontic management, and to assess the impact of surgery on facial growth and oral development. METHODS: A retrospective study including 14 patients with GGS, followed at the Necker Enfants Malades Hospital. The study was carr

Abnormality in the Morphogenesis of Tooth Development and Relationship with Orthodontic Deformities and Treatment Approaches.

In the process of odontogenesis, a disturbance in the formation of the epithelium and mesenchyme can be observed and this can be manifested by atypical forms of dental development. Such biological phenomena with altered morphology are as follows: dens invaginatus (DI), dens evaginatus (DE), talon cusps, and double teeth (DT) or connate teeth (fusion and gemination). Patients with orthodontic anomalies who also exhibit teeth with morphogenetic disorders are presented in this article. Dens evaginatus and talon cusps pose orthodontic challenges in the treatment finishing phase. These reduce the p

Is the early mixed dentition dental arch relationship related to the anteroposterior alignment of the maxillary segments in infants with CUCLP?

OBJECTIVE: Midface retrusion is a concern in patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP). Maxillary segment alignment may influence the prognosis after corrective surgery. This study assessed the association between maxillary segment alignment and interarch relationship observed in the early mixed dentition. The null hypothesis was that there is no relation between the initial alignment of cleft segments and the width of the cleft in the infant, and the early mixed dentition interarch relationship. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: The sample consists of 352 children with CUCL

Orthodontic treatment of a nine-year-old patient with hypophosphatemic rickets diagnosed since the age of two: A case report.

Hypophosphatemic rickets (HR) is a genetic disorder with various types of inheritance. It results mainly from defects in factors that control mineral ion homeostasis such as 1,25(OH)2D (Calcitriol) and FGF23 (Fibroblast Growth Factor 23). The existing bibliography regarding orthodontic treatment in patients with hypophosphatemic rickets is extremely limited. The aim of this case report is to describe the orthodontic treatment of a 9-year old Caucasian female patient suffering from HR. The patient presented a healthy late mixed dentition and periodontium. She suffered from a mild Class III maxi

Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment of a Patient With Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by a defect in paternally expressed genes in the 15q11-q13 region. Prader-Willi syndrome affects many parts of the body and involves craniofacial and dentofacial abnormalities. We herein report the successful 2-stage orthodontic treatment of an 8-year-old girl with PWS caused by paternal 15q11-q13 deletion. She presented with a skeletal class II relationship with mandibular deviation, a deep overbite, and severe crowding of the lower dental arch. Functional appliance therapy was utilized to improve her skeletal discrepancy. The seco

Differences in dentofacial morphology in children with sleep disordered breathing are detected with routine orthodontic records.

BACKGROUND: Residual snoring in children with obstructive sleep disordered breathing (SDB) may continue post-adenotonsillectomy. This study aims to identify baseline dentofacial differences in children with SDB using routine orthodontic records that might aid effective early intervention for the upper airway to prevent continued obstruction. METHODS: Children (6-16 years) with clinically diagnosed SDB from a paediatric Otolaryngology Clinic who required adenotonsillectomy were participants (n = 10). The control group (n = 9) comprised healthy non-snoring children from the community. Baseline

Localised scleroderma en coup de sabre affecting the skin, dentition and bone tissue within craniofacial neural crest fields. Clinical and radiographic study of six patients.

PURPOSE: When localised scleroderma occurs in the face, neck and scalp area, it is called scleroderma en coup de sabre (SCS) for its resemblance to the stroke of a sabre. Most observed characteristics: abnormal skin and dental development, facial atrophy and neurological complications. The aim was to evaluate the extent of SCS in the underlying subcutis, including teeth/bone tissues. The goal was to solve, how far the external visual skin abnormality extends in depth, and if the condition appears within and limited to craniofacial neural crest fields. METHODS: Photographic and radiographic ma

Anatomical variations in the digastric muscle.

The aim of this study was to investigate anatomical variations in the digastric muscle. Anatomical dissections of the head and neck region were performed in 15 cadavers at the Anatomy Department during a gross anatomy course. Three cadaver heads revealed anatomical variations in the anterior belly of the digastric muscle. The positional relationships among the accessory muscle bundles, the anterior belly of the digastric muscle, and the mylohyoid muscle were examined. Innervating branches from the mylohyoid nerve were also investigated. The remaining 12 cadaver heads without accessory muscle b

Functional stability analyses of maxillofacial skeleton bearing cleft deformities.

The symmetrically stable craniofacial bony structure supports the complex functions and delicate contour of the face. Congenital craniofacial deformities are often accompanied by bony defects and have been repetitively correlated with compromised dento-maxillary stability, but neither the extent nor the pattern of cleft-related maxillary instability has been explored in detail. Furthermore, it is largely unknown if the bony defect and related instability are correlated with secondary maxillary deformity common among patients with orofacial clefts. With the aid of finite element modeling, we st
