GAND classification and volumetric assessment of unilateral cleft lip and palate malformations using cone beam computed tomography.

The aim of this study was to propose a classification for unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) malformations based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, as well as to estimate the amount of bone necessary for grafting, and to evaluate the relationship of this volume with scores obtained using the classification. CBCT images of 33 subjects with UCLP were evaluated according to gap, arch, nasal, and dental parameters (GAND classification). Additionally, these defects were segmented and the amount of graft needed for alveolar bone grafting was estimated. The reproducibility of GAND cl

Orthodontic management of missing lateral incisor by miniscrew-anchored device.

Congenitally missing teeth are one of the most common tooth anomalies associated to therapeutic sets of problems. Orthodontists should consider these clinical cases because management often requires an integrated orthodontic and restorative approach. In the present study authors reported a therapy note referred to a 14-year-old male patient affected by missing maxillary lateral incisors, bilateral dental Class II and deep bite, treated in 2009 at the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Messina. An orthodontic treatment has been planned with the aim of distalize maxillary molar and

Relationship between Orthodontic Treatment Plan and Goslon Yardstick Assessment in Japanese Patients with Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: One-stage vs. Two-stage Palatoplasty.

The present study targeted patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) undergoing either one - (Wardill technique) or two-stage palatoplasty (Perko technique). Correlations between Goslon Yardstick scores and orthodontic appliances used and whether an osteotomy was performed were investigated. No differences were observed between the two types of palatoplasty in terms of Goslon Yardstick scores. A palatal expander and protraction facemask were used in Phase I of orthodontic treatment. The palatal expander was selected for most patients with UCLP in Phase I, regardless of the surgical

Self-reported oral behaviour habits in hyperdivergent and normodivergent facial types.

The relationship between facial morphology and jaw function remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in self-reported oral behaviour habits between individuals with normodivergent and hyperdivergent facial types. Some 80 cases and controls were individually matched on age, sex ethnicity and treatment stage. The participants were recruited from an orthodontic clinic, and included both adolescents and adults. Habitual oral activity was assessed using the Oral Behaviour Checklist (OBC) based on their experiences in the past 4 weeks. Univariate and bivariate

Influence of tonsillar grade on the dental arch measurements.

INTRODUCTION: The role of the palatine tonsils in the development of dental intra-arch and interarch abnormalities is often brought up in the literature, but it remains controversial. Data on the probable relationship between enlarged tonsils and the occurrence of orthodontic abnormalities are subjective. The purpose of this study was to seek an association between the space occupied by the palatine tonsils and the dental arch measurements. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on a group of children subdivided into 5 groups according to the standardized tonsillar hypertrophy grading

Effects of breast-feeding duration, bottle-feeding duration and non-nutritive sucking habits on the occlusal characteristics of primary dentition.

BACKGROUND: Early transition from breastfeeding and non-nutritive sucking habits may be related to occlusofacial abnormalities as environmental factors. Previous studies have not taken into account the potential for interactions between feeding practice, non-nutritive sucking habits and occlusal traits. This study assessed the effects of breast-feeding duration, bottle-feeding duration and non-nutritive sucking habits on the occlusal characteristics of primary dentition in 3-6-year-old children in Peking city. METHODS: This cross sectional study was conducted via an examination of the occlusa

Mild hypodontia is associated with smaller tooth dimensions and cusp numbers than in controls.

OBJECTIVE: The associations seen clinically between variations in tooth number, size and shape reflect the repetitive genetic interactions occurring between the epithelium and mesenchyme during the initiation and morphogenetic stages of the Complex Adaptive System that is dental development. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical relationship further by comparing multiple crown parameters, including cusp numbers, between patients with mild hypodontia and controls in a Romanian sample. DESIGN: Digital images of dental casts of the permanent dentition from 28 patients with mild h

Maxillary lateral incisor agenesis and its relationship to overall tooth size.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisor has been linked to differences in the size of the remaining teeth. Thus, the mesiodistal space required for definitive esthetic restoration in patients with missing maxillary lateral incisors may be reduced. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a tooth size discrepancy exists in orthodontic patients with agenesis of one or both maxillary lateral incisors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty sets of dental casts from orthodontic patients (19 men and 21 women; mean 15.9 years of age; all of European origin) were col

Permanent Tooth Agenesis and Maxillary Hypoplasia in Patients with Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary growth in patients with clefts is highly variable. The authors' aim was to investigate whether severity of maxillary hypoplasia is associated with the presence of permanent tooth agenesis in children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate. METHODS: Fifty children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate were divided into two groups of 25 children. One group had tooth agenesis of the cleft maxillary lateral incisor, whereas the other did not. Panoramic radiographs, lateral cephalometric radiographs, and dental casts were available for all children in the mixed

Predicting Agenesis of the Mandibular Second Premolar from Adjacent Teeth.

Early diagnosis of agenesis of the mandibular second premolar (P2) enhances management of the dental arch in the growing child. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship in the development of the mandibular first molar (M1) and first premolar (P1) at early stages of P2 (second premolar). Specifically, we ask if the likelihood of P2 agenesis can be predicted from adjacent developing teeth. We selected archived dental panoramic radiographs with P2 at crown formation stages (N = 212) and calculated the likelihood of P2 at initial mineralisation stage 'Ci' given the tooth stage of adja

A Geometric Classification of Jaw Deformities.

In the United States, the most widely used classification system for jaw deformities is the one provided by the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM), a taxonomy scheme that is based on the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The last iteration of ICD-CM, version 10, sorts jaw deformities according to geometry, into 3 groups: anomalies of jaw size, anomalies of jaw-cranial base relationship, or unspecified. Yet these deformities can affect 6 different geometric attributes: size, position, orientation, shape, symmetry, a
