BACKGROUND: Different treatment alternatives are possible in the preprosthetic orthodontic management of missing of lateral incisors. We describe an efficient approach in a 12.11-year-old girl with incisors agenesis.
CASE REPORT: Treatment started with repositioning of the permanent canines in site 2 and the deciduous canines in site 3. After growth completion the deciduous canines will be extracted and replaced by dental implants. Permanent canines will then undergo reshaping in order to look like lateral incisors. The molar and cuspid relationships were finalised in Class I, with correct ov

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between anthropometric lip measurements and dental arch relationships in patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP).
DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study.
PATIENTS: Children with CUCLP.
METHODS: Anthropometric lip measurements, made immediately prior to lip repair, were available for each patient. The dental arch relationships were evaluated on dental study casts (8.6 ± 0.9 years) taken prior to any orthodontic treatment and prior to alveolar bone graft, using the modified Huddart and Bodenham (MHB) scoring system. The presen

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to explore the predictive potential of the preoperative Kushida index score and subsequent outcome following maxillomandibular advancement surgery (MMA). Secondarily we looked at how well the Kushida values of our OSA patients matched the morphometric models diagnostic thresholds.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent MMA for OSA at our institution. Kushida morphometric scores were calculated using the described formula: P + (Mx - Mn) + 3 × OJ + 3 × [Max (BMI - 25)] × (NC ÷ BMI). Regression analysis was performed

This case report describes the successful extraction treatment of a Class II division 2 malocclusion with mandibular posterior discrepancy and a congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor on the left side. The posterior space in the mandibular arch was small, and the mandibular second molars were impacted, with distal tipping. The discrepancies in the maxillary and mandibular arches were resolved by extraction of the maxillary lateral incisor on the right side and the mandibular second premolars on both sides. The mesial movement of the mandibular first molars occurred appropriately, with

A young man, age 18 years 4 months, with a concave profile, a skeletal maxillary deficiency, and a severe alveolar cleft with an unesthetic appearance of the maxillary anterior teeth was referred for orthodontic treatment. After a detailed review of his pretreatment records, both surgical and nonsurgical treatment plans were presented to the patient, who opted for a nonsurgical interdisciplinary approach. His complex 3-dimensional malocclusion required palatal expansion, dental extractions, and periodontal and prosthodontic consultations and treatment, in addition to comprehensive orthodontic

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the nasopharyngeal airway volumes of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) with different GOSLON scores.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 34 patients with UCLP and 20 controls with no cleft history. In the UCLP group, three experienced examiners used the GOSLON Yardstick to rate dental arch relationships, and the sample was divided into three groups as GOSLON 2 (G2) (n = 13), GOSLON 3 (G3) (n = 10), and GOSLON 4 (G4) (n = 11). Airway volumes were constructed using three-dimensional computed tomography data and divided into f

Noonan syndrome (NS) was described by Noonan and Ehmke as a multi-system disorder, which is typically evident at birth. The incidence of this syndrome is estimated to be one per 2500 to one per 1000 and affects both genders. While the clinical manifestations of NS have been well documented, the oral manifestations have not been extensively discussed. The purpose of the present article is to (a) review the oral manifestations of NS reported in the literature, and (b) describe four cases (three females and one male) of NS, who presented with short stature, cardiac problems and various oral findi

INTRODUCTION: Morphological variations in primary dentition are of great concern to a pediatric dentist as it may pose clinical problems like dental caries, delayed exfoliation and also anomalies in the permanent dentition, such as impaction of successors, supernumerary teeth, permanent double teeth or aplasia of teeth. The present study was conducted to investigate the presence of dental anomalies in the primary dentition of 1000 schoolchildren in the 3-5 year-old age group in Faridabad.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-thousand schoolchildren were examined using Type III examination (WHO, 1997) f

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a congenital growth disorder. Children born with BWS develop enlarged organs, including the tongue, a large body, and other signs. A woman with BWS was treated and followed for 30 years. Treatment consisted of tongue reduction, orthopedic and orthodontic treatment, orthognathic surgery, and retention. The patient was first treated when she was 5 years old. Her original orthodontic problems included macroglossia, anterior open bite, anterior crossbite, and a skeletal Class III jaw relationship caused by significant mandibular protrusion. The jaw-base relatio

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Malocclusion, the body posture, and the breathing pattern may correlate, but this issue is still controversial. The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the type of malocclusion, the body posture, and the nasopharyngeal obstruction in 12-14-year-old children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 76 orthodontic patients (35 boys, 41 girls) aged 12-14 years (mean age, 12.79 years [SD, 0.98]). All the patients were examined by the same orthodontist (study model and cephalometric radiograph analysis), the same orthopedic surgeon (body po

OBJECTIVES: As part of efforts to explore the relationship between linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) and dental fluctuating asymmetry (DFA), DFA levels were compared between a hypoplastic group and a non-hypoplastic group. Since both LEH and DFA are pathological indicators of environmental stress which are represented by teeth, it was hypothesized that the hypoplastic group would exhibit higher levels of DFA than the non-hypoplastic group.
DESIGN: Total of 136 sets of Korean skeletal remains from the Joseon Dynasty (mid 15th-early 20th century, South Korea) were used. To test the hypothesis, DFA

This case report describes the orthodontic treatment of an adult patient with iatrogenic absence of the maxillary canines, moderate maxillary and severe mandibular dental crowding, a Bolton discrepancy with a large mandibular anterior excess, a maxillary right lateral incisor crossbite, and Angle Class II molar relationships. The treatment consisted of fixed appliance therapy, mandibular incisor extraction, tooth bleaching, and dental recontouring. This method of treatment maintained the patient's good facial appearance, improved the dental esthetics, and provided a good functional occlusion,

OBJECTIVE: Palate and lip repair have great influence on the sagittal and transverse growth of the maxilla. The correlation between arch widths and sagittal interarch relationships in operated patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) in the mixed dentition is not clear. The aim of this study was to compare the maxillary arch widths of patients with UCLP and different interarch relationships (GOSLON Yardstick index).
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 144 pairs of dental casts of patients with complete UCLP from 8 to 10 years of age, from a single center. These dental

AIM: The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of developmental defects of enamel on maxillary premolars in patients with cleft lip and/or palate. In addition, the relationship with the surgical technique of soft palate closure was studied. Such a relationship could be suspected since formation of enamel occurs around the same time period as soft palate closure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study consisted of three groups. Patients from the first group (n = 123) were recruited from the Cleft Lip and Palate Team of the University Hospitals Leuven (CLPT-UHL). The second group (n =
