INTRODUCTION: Upper airways obstruction can result in the reduction of the transversal dimensions of the maxillary arch which affect the vertical and the sagittal dimensions. The PNIF measure is an objec- tive and cheap way to assess the upper airways permeability. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between PNIF and dental arch sizes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy eight patients (40 girls and 38 boys) age ranged 10-15 years were included in this cross sectional study. The PNIF was measured with a Youlten peak flow meter (Clement Clarke International, London, United Kingd

Two-flap palatoplasty is commonly used to treat cleft palate defects, but only a few reports on outcomes have been published in the literature. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 257 cases of cleft palate treated with two-flap palatoplasty at a single center in Greece over a 13-year period. Our outcomes data included surgical complication rates, the results of speech assessments, midface development, and other parameters. We found a low rate of short- and long-term complications that required revision surgery, such as symptomatic fistula (5.4%) and velopharyngeal insufficiency (5.3%). Sp

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence, distribution, clinical features, and relationship with dental anomalies of maxillary canine impaction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The complete pretreatment records of 1674 orthodontic patients were examined. Subjects with maxillary impacted canines were divided into two study groups: a palatally displaced canine (PDC) group (114 patients) and a buccally displaced canine (BDC) group (37 patients). These were compared to a control group of 151 patients who were randomly selected from the initial sample without maxillary canine impaction. The significance of ass

AIM: To investigate the use of 3D plastic models, printed from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data, for accurate diagnosis and conservative treatment of a complex case of dens invaginatus.
SUMMARY: A chronic apical abscess with a draining sinus tract was diagnosed during the treatment planning stage of orthodontic therapy. Radiographic examination revealed a large radiolucent area associated with an invaginated right maxillary central incisor, which was found to contain a vital pulp. The affected tooth was strategic in the dental arch. Conventional periapical radiographs provided only p

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS) is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by ophthalmologic anterior segment abnormalities and extraocular findings including dental anomalies and redundant periumbilical skin. Intragenic mutations in the homeobox gene PITX2 or the transcription factor encoding FOXC1 were identified, and genomic rearrangements encompassing either gene also cause ARS. A molecular etiology is identified in 40-60%. Extraocular anomalies occur more often with intragenic PITX2 than FOXC1 mutations. We report on a patient with infantile glaucoma presenting at age 21 months with

The aim of the study was to analyse the prevalence and distribution of buccally displaced canines (BDCs) in subjects scheduled for orthodontic treatment and to investigate the association between BDC and sagittal, vertical, and transverse dentoskeletal relationships. A study sample of 1852 subjects was examined, and it was divided randomly into two groups. A first group of 252 subjects served as control group: the 'reference' prevalence rates for the examined parameters were calculated in this group. The remaining 1600 subjects comprised the sample from which the experimental BDC group was der

A tooth is impacted when its apex is formed but does not erupt as expected during the physiological timeframe of eruption. The frequency with which the upper canine is impacted in the sample examined varies from 1% to 5% of the population in the second decade of life. The most frequent causes of inclusion of the upper canine are: lack of resorption or precocious loss of the root of the deciduous, agenesis of the lateral, an anomaly in its shape, lack of space in the arch, presence of a mechanical obstacle to the eruption, and lastly due to hereditary factors. When dental impaction is suspected

Rehabilitation of the edentulous patient with atrophic ridges is a problem especially when compounded with a severe prognathic inter-arch relationship. It is difficult to rehabilitate these patients prosthetically without correction of the malrelation of the jaws. The established surgical techniques for correcting combined sagittal and vertical discrepancies of edentulous jaws are often prolonged and complex with attendant morbidity. This article presents a novel, simple method of correction of severe interarch sagittal discrepancy (more than 15 mm) by performing distraction osteogenesis at Le

The epidemiological data on the prevalence of malocclusion is an important determinant in planning appropriate levels of orthodontic services. The occurrence of occlusal anomalies varies between different countries, ethnic and age groups. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of malocclusion among Lithuanian schoolchildren in the 7-9-, 10-12-, and 13-15-year age groups assessing occlusal morphology. The study included 1681 schoolchildren aged 7-15 years. The crowding, spacing, overbite, overjet, the relationship of the first upper and lower molars according Angle's classificatio

The aim of the present study was to determine the dental and occlusal features that could contribute to the aetiology of palatally displaced canines (PDCs). The material consisted of pre-treatment dental casts of 50 patients (36 females and 14 males) with unilateral and bilateral PDCs aged 14-16 years (mean 15.6 +/- 1.6 years). These were compared with a control group of 50 treated subjects (25 males and 25 females) of the same age with normally erupted maxillary canines. The following parameters were measured on the dental casts: the mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) width of each maxill

A young patient complained of missing inferior second premolars. Clinical and cephalometric parameters suggested the indication for a prosthetic solution, opening the spaces between first premolars and molars, aiming to correct occlusal relationships. Space closure was thus excluded. After full arch alignment a selective conservative channel-like wedge shaped osteotomy, distal to the second molars, was performed, applying a piezo-microsurgery technique, which uses fine inserts (0.5-0.7 mm) and ultrasound. The method allows for good patient compliance, improved rapid healing, and no secondary a
