OBJECTIVE: Articular disc displacement (ADD) is a major pathology of temporomandibular disorders that increases temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) risk. However, its effect on gene expression in the retrodiscal tissue remains unexplored. This research elucidated the genetic alterations in the articular disc-retrodiscal tissue complex (ADRC) caused by ADD and investigated their association with TMJ-OA.
METHODS: ADD was induced in the temporomandibular joints of rats, which were euthanised after 8 weeks post-op. RNA sequencing was performed on the ADRC (n = 3/group), and histologic

INTRODUCTION: Military, police, and firefighter personnel routinely face extreme physical and psychological stress, potentially increasing their vulnerability to Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). While emerging evidence suggests elevated TMD rates in these professions, the collective burden across these services has remained poorly understood, hindering targeted occupational health initiatives. This systematic review and meta-analysis is the first to synthesize global evidence on TMD prevalence in these high-stress uniformed professions. Our primary objectives were to establish a pooled preva

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint, jaw muscles, and surrounding tissues. The major signs and symptoms of TMD include chronic pain and reduced range of jaw movement, adversely impacting the quality of life. Psychological factors, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, contribute to the development and exacerbation of TMD. Yoga, an effective mind-body intervention for physical and psychological symptoms, lacks a standardized module for TMD patients.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to develop, validate, and pilot test a yoga

OBJECTIVES: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is the reference standard for detecting osseous changes in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) but involves ionizing radiation. MRI avoids radiation exposure and enables simultaneous soft and hard tissue evaluation; however, its sensitivity for osseous abnormalities remains limited. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a proof-of-concept two-stage deep learning framework for automated MRI-based TMJ-OA detection.
METHODS: A retrospective dataset of 200 bilateral TMJ MRI examinations (400 condyles; 113 osteoarthritic, 287 non-oste

PURPOSE: Traumatic dental occlusion (TDO) is a multifactorial and dynamic clinical condition that extends beyond localised tooth wear and has been reported to be associated with alterations in temporomandibular joint biomechanics, neuromuscular function and overall masticatory system performance. While acute dental trauma often receives greater clinical attention, chronic occlusal trauma may remain underrecognised in routine practice, despite its potential to influence mandibular movement patterns, modify joint loading and contribute to patient-reported functional complaints.

During food intake, 3 groups of muscles are active in coordinating the movements of the mandible and the hyoid bone: masticatory muscles, suprahyoid muscles and infrahyoid muscles. The mandibular nerve innervates the masticatory muscles. The mandibular nerve, the facial nerve and the cervical plexus innervate the suprahyoid muscles. The cervical plexus also innervates the infrahyoid muscles. Overuse of the masticatory muscles by clenching or grinding teeth, for example can result in temporomandibular dysfunction, which is characterized by muscle pain, and is often paired with limited mouth ope

Chronic pain is linked to accelerated brain aging, often measured through the brain-age gap (BAG), the difference between chronological age and neuroimaging-derived brain age. Whether endogenous pain modulation declines with brain aging remains unknown. We tested this in participants with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in a cross-sectional study with 84 TMD participants and 84 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience database. Temporomandibular disorder participants completed the Graded Chronic Pain Scale and a placebo procedure combin

BACKGROUND: Despite affecting approximately 30% of the population, the pathogenesis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) remains poorly understood. Conditions such as disc displacement and joint degeneration are often associated with biomechanical dysfunction. Identifying and categorizing biomarkers in the articular disc may enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms and progression, potentially improving diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes.
AIM: This review examines patterns among immunohistochemical biomarkers in the articular disc, with a focus on internal derangement and dis

BACKGROUND: The articular eminence is essential for the proper functioning of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), guiding the movement of the mandibular condyle along its posterior slope. Changes in the inclination of the articular eminence (AEI) can occur as a result of tooth loss or aging. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the AEI and the Eichner Index.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study analyzed 162 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images from patients with TMJ dysfunction. These images were categorized into three groups (A, B, and C) according to the
