Quality of life in patients with severe malocclusion before treatment.

The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of oral health impacts among patients with severe malocclusions and dentofacial deformities before treatment. A further aim was to evaluate the effect of gender or the type of malocclusion on the oral impacts. The study comprised 151 adult patients who were referred for orthodontic or surgical-orthodontic treatment to the Oral and Maxillofacial Department, Oulu University Hospital, Finland during the years 2001-2004. The study group consisted of 92 females and 59 males with a mean age of 35.5 years [standard deviation (SD) 11.5 years, range

Assessment of characteristic features and dental anomalies accompanying tooth transposition: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate possible characteristic features and dental anomalies that accompany tooth transposition. METHODS: Several electronic databases were searched. Hand searching was also performed to identify potentially relevant studies. Initially, 409 articles were retrieved (399 by electronic searching, 10 by hand searching). After applying specific exclusion criteria, 5 studies were eligible for this meta-analysis. Meta-analysis was performed by determining the marginal mean proportions and the 95% confidence intervals estimated by the random-effect mode

Diagnosis of dental deformities in cephalometry images using support vector machine.

This paper proposes an automated target recognition algorithm using Support Vector Machine (SVM) to extract landmark points for craniofacial features in cephalometry radiograph. The features are extracted by subjecting the radiograph to the Projected Principle Edge Distribution (PPED) algorithm. Edge flags are accumulated in every four columns and spatial distribution of edge flags are represented by a histogram. The resultants are the front end of support vector machine. Vectors, which possess land marks, are separated from all other vectors. The centroid points, automatically determined from

Investigating the etiology of multiple tooth agenesis in three sisters with severe oligodontia.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the dentofacial phenotypes of three sisters with severe non-syndromic oligodontia, to report on the mutation analysis in three genes, previously shown to cause various phenotypes of non-syndromic oligodontia and in two other suspected genes. Based on the phenotypes in the pedigree of this family, the different possible patterns of transmission are discussed. METHODS: Anamnestic data and a panoramic radiograph were taken to study the phenotype of the three sisters and their first-degree relatives. Blood samples were also taken to obtain their karyotypes and DNA samples.

Interdisciplinary management of a patient with skeletal anteroposterior discrepancy, impacted canine, and missing teeth.

For patients with complex dentofacial problems, orthodontic treatment is often not enough to obtain optimal esthetic and functional results. This case report demonstrates the treatment of a patient with skeletal anteroposterior discrepancy through an interdisciplinary approach and emphasizes the importance of collaboration with other dental disciplines to achieve the desired esthetic results.

Endodontic treatment in three taurodontic teeth associated with 48,XXXY Klinefelter syndrome: a review and case report.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most common chromosomal abnormality in humans. Taurodontism may occur as one of many dentofacial manifestations of KS and can be detected before development of other physical characteristics. Identification of patients with taurodontic teeth may lead to early recognition of the disorder and could substantially improve quality of life. The objective of this report is to review the general characteristics and dentofacial manifestations of KS, specifically taurodontism, and present a patient with the 48,XXXY variant where root-canal therapy was successfully comple

Cephalometric findings in patients with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Literature regarding oral conditions in patients with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) often covers the periodontal aspects, but no literature was found describing specific craniofacial findings in this group. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the cephalometric findings of patients with PLS. METHODS: Lateral cephalograms of 8 patients with PLS were traced, and hard- and soft-tissue variables were analyzed. RESULTS: Class III skeletal relationship was evident (ANB angle, 2 degrees +/- 3.1 degrees ; Wits appraisal, -9.1 mm +/- 3.7 mm). Other findings include m

Follow-up: orthognathic surgery. Is there a future? A national survey.

BACKGROUND: The authors recently documented a significant decrease in orthognathic surgical cases performed by both plastic and oral surgeons in Ohio over a recent 5-year period. The main reason noted was related to third-party reimbursement. This is a potentially serious issue that may affect the quality of health care for patients with dentofacial deformities. Therefore, an expanded survey was conducted to determine whether this was indicative of a national trend. METHODS: A three-page questionnaire was sent nationally to plastic surgeons and oral surgeons who were members of the American S

Four-dimensional analysis of stomatognathic function.

Many researchers have attempted to clarify the complex relationships between stomatognathic function and craniofacial morphology. Most studies investigated the trajectories of incisal or condylar points and measured temporomandibular morphology projected onto 2-dimensional radiographic films. Although these methods provided valuable information, their diagnostic capabilities were limited. We introduce a new 4-dimensional (4D) analysis of stomatognathic function that combines the 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography of the cranium and mandible, dental surface imaging with a noncontact 3D lase

Prevention perspective in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics.

In the present context of the public health directions, considering WHO main objective, that "all people of the world could reach the highest possible health level", in medicine, the accent is put on prevention. In spite of the important progresses achieved in orthodontics field, the treatment still remains a symptomatic one. In this context, we must ask ourselves what are the prevention theoretical and practical coordinates in orthodontics, which measures are available or could be elaborated for preventing the malocclusions development. From the clinical point of view, the most important elem

Hypodontia: an epidemiologic study of American black and white people.

INTRODUCTION: There are numerous epidemiologic studies of hypodontia, but most focus on white populations that, because of small teeth and slow development, might not represent the status of other peoples. The purpose of this study was to contrast the distributions of hypodontia in an adolescent sample of American blacks (n=600) with a comparable sample of whites (n=1100). METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of 1700 unrelated adolescents between 12 and 18 years were scrutinized for hypodontia. Those with syndromes and major genes contributing to congenital absence were omitted. RESULTS: The preva

Oculofaciocardiodental syndrome and orthodontics.

Radiculomegaly of a tooth is a rare condition. When it is associated with other dental abnormalities and congenital cataracts, the condition is called oculofaciocardiodental syndrome, which is characterized by congenital cataracts, dental anomalies, many minor facial dysmorphic features, and congenital heart defects. So far, only 20 cases have been reported. In this article, the case of a 14-year-old girl with congenital cataracts, radiculomegaly of the maxillary central incisors and the maxillary and mandibular canines, dilacerations of the mandibular incisors, and open apexes of many teeth i

A new face by combined surgery for patients with complex dentofacial deformity.

BACKGROUND: This article aims to present and discuss 53 patients who received a new identity because of major changes to the face after treatment with bimaxillary osteotomy, concomitant maxillomalar augmentation, genioplasty, and rhinoplastic procedures for their complex dentofacial skeletal deformity and class 3 malocclusion. METHODS: During a 12-year period (January 1993 to April 2005), more than 500 patients with dentofacial deformities and malocclusions have undergone orthognathic surgery performed by a team consisting of the same plastic surgeons and orthodontists. Among this group, 53 p

Nasolabial aesthetics.

Orthognathic surgery, as it relates to the maxilla, attempts to correct underlying skeletal deformities as well as improve function. In addition, it has the potential to significantly alter the central aesthetic unit of the face, the nasolabial region. A key to achieving a good functional as well as aesthetic result involves both comprehensive surgical planning and an understanding of the effects that orthognathic surgery of the maxilla will have on the soft tissues within the nasolabial region. The LeFort I osteotomy is one of the most commonly performed techniques to correct maxillary dentof

Maxillary tooth transposition: correct or accept?

Among dentitional anomalies, tooth transposition is considered the most difficult to manage clinically. Uncorrected, the results are often both functionally and esthetically unsatisfactory. Acceptance of the malpositions and alignment is nevertheless the predominating treatment strategy in case reports in the literature. Our aims in this article were to present a literature survey on the prevalence and the etiology and to discuss the cost-benefit considerations influencing the treatment strategy and the decision whether to accept or correct. An additional aim was to discuss the treatment of 12

[The suitability of orthodontical groups of indications (OGI) for preventive dental examinations of the public health service].

In the context of the dental preventive medical examinations of the public health service, the orthodontical data-gathering in children's day-care centre and schools, in contrast to the diagnoses of caries disease, was made was based so far on a non-uniform methodology. In order to provide in future, also in the orthodontical sector, data material that is usable for comparative national and local health reporting, a uniform methodology should form the basis for the data acquisition. The present study makes a contribution to this objective. A goal of the work was to test two different collectio

Geometry and cell density of rat craniofacial sutures during early postnatal development and upon in vivo cyclic loading.

Cranial sutures are unique to skull bones and consist of multiple connective tissue cell lineages such as mesenchymal cells, fibroblast-like cells, and osteogenic cells, in addition to osteoclasts. Mechanical modulation of intramembranous bone growth in the craniofacial suture is not well understood, especially during postnatal development. This study investigated whether in vivo mechanical forces regulate sutural growth responses in postnatal rats. Cyclic compressive forces with a peak-to-peak magnitude of 300 mN and 4 Hz were applied to the maxilla in each of 17-, 23-and 32-day-old rats for
