INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the prevalence and distribution of hypodontia in the permanent dentition, excluding the third molars, in a sample of Japanese orthodontic patients.
METHODS: Orthopantomograms of 3358 Japanese orthodontic patients (1453 boys and 1905 girls) between the ages of 5 and 15 years were examined for evidence of hypodontia.
RESULTS: The prevalence of hypodontia was 8.5% (7.5% for boys, 9.3% for girls) with no statistically significant difference between the sexes. The average number of missing teeth per child was 2.4 (2.5 for boys, 2

Van der Woude's syndrome (VDW; #OMIM 119300) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by cleft lip and/or palate and lower lip pit (fistula). The precise skeletal characteristics are unclear, and there have been no case reports of orthodontic treatment of patients with VDW. The Japanese girl whose treatment is reported here had VDW, including bilateral cleft lip and palate and bilateral symmetric lower lip pits. Orthodontic treatment started when she was just 3 years old, with a removable maxillary expansion appliance, followed by an edgewise multibracket appliance in both arches. Retent

Recently mutations in single genes have been found to cause dentofacial deviations like hypodontia, cleft lip and palate, as well as some craniofacial malformation syndromes like Aperts/Crouzon syndromes, cleidocranial dysostosis... These findings may lead to an overestimation and oversimplification of the role of genes in our daily life. The "one gene, one disease" principle has been applied too often, while most complex human characteristics are determined by a large number of genes, each leading to an increased liability for a certain condition. Whether this condition is expressed or not de

The aim of this epidemiological study was to assess the prevalence of malocclusion, associated caries experience, and level of oral hygiene in the Hungarian population using the World Health Organisation (WHO) questionnaire designed to assess dentofacial anomalies. A total of 483 adolescents (289 girls, 194 boys), aged 16-18 years, were assessed. Orthodontic anomalies were detected in 70.4 per cent of the sample. Crowding and spacing were observed in 14.3 and 17 per cent, respectively, with the latter being more prevalent in the maxilla than in the mandible (10.4 and 2.9 per cent, respectively

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess nasopharyngeal soft-tissue patterns in patients with ideal occlusion.
METHODS: A sample of 91 patients was selected from the Dental School at Complutense University of Madrid. None of the subjects had a history of sleep disorder, snoring, sleep apnea, upper airway disease, adenoidectomy, or pathology in the pharynx. Lateral cephalograms were digitized, and linear and area measures were made to define the airway pattern. Error analysis was performed to prevent systematic or random errors. The Student t test and the Pearson correlation analysis

OBJECTIVES: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a collection of signs and symptoms seen in children exposed to alcohol in the prenatal period. It is characterized mainly by a distinct pattern of craniofacial malformations, physical and mental retardation. However, with the increased incidence of FAS, there is a great variation in the clinical features of FAS.
DESIGN: Narrative review.
RESULTS: This review describes data from clinical and experimental studies, and in vitro models. Experimental studies have shown that alcohol has a direct toxic effect on the ectodermal and mesodermal cells of the

A patient with atypical Goldenhar syndrome is reported. The characteristic features similar to the other reported cases are facial asymmetry, multiple skin tags, limbal dermoids and posteriorly angulated ear. The atypical intraoral feature is unilateral presence of multiple complex odontomes. The hypotrophy of left hemisphere with localized calcification in the occipital and parietal regions of brain is also an additional finding in this patient.

Atypical dentofacial structures may be the first indicator of other anomalies linked to a syndrome. This case describes the management of a 9-year-old girl referred for the routine management of supernumerary teeth. The anomalous form of her teeth, together with multiple supernumerary units and a history of congenital cataracts, were suggestive of a diagnosis of Nance-Horan syndrome. This is an X-linked disorder, in which females usually demonstrate mild expression; this case was unusual in respect to the marked phenotype expressed. Unusually, the girl developed 2 spontaneous abscesses of her

The success of early orthopedic treatment in patients with Class III anomalies depends on facial skeletal development and type of treatment. This case report describes the treatment of a 12.6-year-old girl who had a severe Class III malocclusion with a 6-mm anterior crossbite, a deep overbite, a narrow maxilla, and unerupted maxillary canines. The treatment plan included rapid palatal expansion to expand the maxilla, reverse headgear to correct the maxillary retrognathia, a removable anterior inclined bite plane to correct the anterior crossbite and the deep overbite, and fixed edgewise applia

Current WHO methods were employed to estimate the prevalence of toothbrush possession, tea drinking, tobacco habits, fluorosis, dentofacial anomalies, periodontal diseases, dental caries as well as treatment needs in schoolchildren in Tunisia, the smallest country in North Africa. Fluorosis was endemic in some regions. Dentofacial anomalies were more frequent than in the other countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). The prevalence of periodontal disease was high despite the high percentage of toothbrush possession. Altogether 60% of 12-year-olds and 70% of 15-year-olds required or

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia has only recently been delineated from other osseo-odontogenic dysplasias. Yet, this seldom-reported developmental abnormality might be diagnosed by a unique combination of clinical, radiographic, and histologic findings. Unilateral maxillary hyperplasia combined with displaced molars and unusual bone trabeculation is quite obvious at an early age. Recognition and subsequent reporting by dental specialists is encouraged to more clearly define the natural progression and the appropriate treatment of this abnormality.

Aberrant tooth positions--such as infraocclusion, mesially ectopic maxillary first molar, palatally displaced canine, tooth transposition, and tooth rotation--are gaining attention as variables in a putative, genetically related pattern of dental anomalies. This study, using panoramic roentgenograms, was undertaken to measure the angular position of the unerupted mandibular second premolar (MnP2) in children. The experimental subjects were 17 children with an unerupted MnP2 and agenesis of the other MnP2, a likely indicator of site-specific genetic disturbance. An age/sex-matched control-refer

High Le Fort I osteotomy and maxillary distraction has become an accepted method for the treatment of maxillary retrusion in children and teenagers with cleft lip and palate or craniofacial anomalies. This procedure effectively corrects the dentofacial deformity in these patients. No major surgical morbidity has been reported. During the past 4 years, 94 cleft patients with maxillary hypoplasia received Le Fort I osteotomy and distraction osteogenesis at the authors' center. Two of them developed blindness after this operation. The first case was a girl with bilateral cleft lip and palate with

An earlier study reported on the delayed dental age in about 50% of patients with palatally displaced canines (PDC), suggesting the possible existence of 2 different PDC phenotypes. The present study aimed to determine whether the PDC subgroup with late dental age displays different dental features from the PDC subgroup with normal dental age, supporting the above assumption. The 3 dental parameters examined were mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth sizes, the presence of anomalous maxillary lateral incisors, and other congenitally missing teeth. Ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly of the tongue characterized by a short, thick, lingual frenum resulting in limitation of tongue movement. The frenum is attached to the tip of the tongue in varying degrees. This study evaluates short lingual frenum and other associated pathologies (dentofacial anomalies and lingual dysglossia) and investigates whether ankyloglossia is related to speech problems. A thorough intraoral examination was carried out using the WHO regulations for dentofacial anomalies and occlusion problems and a new scale of lingual mobility. This article also discusses the

OBJECTIVES: This collaborative study, based on data collected by the network of Italian association of cancer registries (AIRTUM), provides updated estimates on the incidence risk of multiple primary cancer (MP). The objective is to highlight and quantify the bidirectional associations between different oncological diseases. The quantification of the excess or decreased risk of further cancers in cancer patients, in comparison with the general population, may contribute to understand the aetiology of cancer and to address clinical follow-up.

The occurrence of cleft palate in mutant mice offers an opportunity to understand the possible role of specific genes in palatogenesis. Here, cleft palate in mice carrying the chondrodysplasia (cho) defect, which consists of an autosomal-recessive mutation in the collagen gene Col11a1, was investigated. The proposed cause of cleft palate in cho homozygous mice is failure of the palatal shelves to adhere and make contact due to mandibular growth abnormalities. Another cause of cleft palate that has recently been demonstrated in other animal models is failure of the midline epithelial seam formi

The goals of primary closure of cleft lip and palate include not only re-establishing normal insertions for all of the nasolabial muscles but also restoring the normal position of all the other soft tissues, including the mucocutaneous elements. Conventional surgical wisdom, which recommends waiting until growth is complete before undertaking surgical correction of the postoperative sequelae of primary cheiloplasty, carries with it many disadvantages. If, after primary surgery of the lip, orolabial dysfunctions remain, they will exert their nefarious influences during growth and will themselve
