Tooth agenesis patterns in Japanese orthodontic patients with nonsyndromic oligodontia.

INTRODUCTION: Tooth agenesis is the most common dental anomaly in humans and is often found in orthodontic patients. However, severe tooth agenesis (oligodontia) is rare and its characteristics are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate tooth agenesis patterns of Japanese orthodontic patients with nonsyndromic oligodontia. METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of 228 orthodontic patients (141 females, 87 males) with nonsyndromic oligodontia were selected and permanent tooth agenesis excluding third molars was evaluated. Influence of cutoff age was tested, tooth agenesis patterns for each

Biomonitorization of metal ions in the serum of Iranian patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances in comparison with controls in eastern Iran.

The present study aimed to assess the level of metal ions [chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn)] in the serum of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. One hundred samples (32 males, 68 females) were collected from patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment for different periods. A reference (control) group (24 males, 16 females) who had no appliances was used to properly evaluate the changes in the level of these elements in orthodontic appliance users. The element concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectro

Allergic rhinitis, rather than asthma, might be associated with dental caries, periodontitis, and other oral diseases in adults.

BACKGROUND: The association between asthma (AS), allergic rhinitis (AR) and oral diseases remains inconclusive in adults. AS and AR often coexist. However, studies that investigate AS, AR together and their association with oral diseases are scarce. METHODS: Data from 22,898 men and 28,541 women, aged 21 to 25 years, were collected from a national database in Taiwan. Five common oral diseases: dental caries, periodontitis, pulpitis, gingivitis, and stomatitis/aphthae were studied. Differences in the incidence of the five oral diseases in AR vs. non-AR, and AS vs. non-AS groups were compared.

No association between types of unilateral mandibular condylar abnormalities and facial asymmetry in orthopedic-treated patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Dentofacial asymmetries are often observed in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvements. The aim of this split-face study was to associate types of radiologic TMJ abnormalities with the degree of dentofacial asymmetry in patients with unilateral TMJ involvements assessed with cone-beam computed tomography. METHODS: Forty-seven JIA patients and 19 nonarthritic control subjects were included in the study. Normal condylar radiologic cone-beam computed tomography appearance in at least 1 TMJ was the inclusion criterion for all p

Cleft Rhinoplasty: Strategies for the Multiply Operated Nose.

Rhinoplasty, as a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the nose while preserving or improving function, is complicated and difficult to master. Revision cleft rhinoplasty offers another tier of challenge. The symmetry, proportions, and definition of the nose are affected by the native cleft deformity but also previous surgical scars, cartilage grafts, and skin excisions. Our preferred approach is to use structural cartilage grafting to establish septal and lower lateral cartilage resiliency. Internal lining deficiency is addressed with skin or lining transfer, while excess nasal tip

Using XRF and ICP-OES in Biosorption Studies.

In this work, a method of recalculation of results of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique to Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) method was elaborated for biosorption studies. Equations that calibrate XRF to ICP-OES were determined, as a biosorbent strawberry, blackcurrant and raspberry seeds after supercritical CO₂ extraction were used. ICP-OES showed a better precision and lower detection limits than XRF. The latter technique is cheaper, requires minimal sample preparation and gives faster results. Linear regression of the data gave almost 1:1 correlations witho

New perspective for evaluation of tooth widths in patients with missing or peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors: Quadrant analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Missing or peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors can affect the mesiodistal dimensions of the dentition. METHODS: The pretreatment casts of patients with bilateral (BMLI, n = 35) or unilateral (UMLI, n = 29) missing maxillary lateral incisors or bilateral peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors (BPLI, n = 16) were evaluated. The mesiodistal widths of all permanent teeth except the second and third molars were measured, and the sums of total and quadrant tooth widths were calculated. The results were compared with a control group (n = 32) with normal maxillary lateral incisors. A q

Multiple impacted permanent teeth, an indicator for early detection of hypoparathyroidism: A rare case report.

Eruption is a process of continuous movement of the developing tooth bud from its developmental location to functional location. Teeth that cease to erupt before emergence to their functional position in the oral cavity are termed as impactions. In permanent dentition, third molars are the most frequently impacted teeth followed by the canines. When impaction involves few teeth, the condition is localized but when it involves multiple teeth, the condition becomes generalized and is often associated with some derangement of the normal physiological processes. Factors causing impactions may be l

Interdisciplinary Approach to Treat Patients With Tooth Agenesis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Tooth agenesis is a type of dental anomaly in which individuals are missing teeth due to developmental failure as a result of genetic or environmental factors. With approximately one fourth of the population missing ≥1 third molar, tooth agenesis is considered a common dental anomaly. However, the severity of tooth agenesis can range from a missing single tooth to multiple teeth. When suffering from severe tooth agenesis, the patient's health and social relationships are often affected. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient in this report congenitally lost 11 teeth and suffered from co
