Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a congenital growth disorder. Children born with BWS develop enlarged organs, including the tongue, a large body, and other signs. A woman with BWS was treated and followed for 30 years. Treatment consisted of tongue reduction, orthopedic and orthodontic treatment, orthognathic surgery, and retention. The patient was first treated when she was 5 years old. Her original orthodontic problems included macroglossia, anterior open bite, anterior crossbite, and a skeletal Class III jaw relationship caused by significant mandibular protrusion. The jaw-base relatio

Collagen XII, largest member of the fibril-associated collagens with interrupted triple helix (FACIT) family, assembles from three identical α-chains encoded by the COL12A1 gene. The molecule consists of three threadlike N-terminal noncollagenous NC3 domains, joined by disulfide bonds and a short interrupted collagen triple helix toward the C-terminus. Splice variants differ considerably in size and properties: "small" collagen XIIB (220 kDa subunit) is similar to collagen XIV, whereas collagen XIIA (350 kDa) has a much larger NC3 domain carrying glycosaminoglycan chains. Collagen XII binds to

Patients with cleft lip and palate frequently develop dento-facial deformity requiring orthognatic surgery. The origin of this deformity is therapeutic and surgeons are currently trying to prevent this iatrogenicity. The maxillary dento-facial deformity in these patients is a retrognathia with infragnathia, associated with endognathia, obliquity of the occlusal plane, with deviation of the superior incisive midline in case of unilateral clefts. The difficulties in the treatment of these skeletal deformities are due to the palatal, labial, and pterygomaxillary scar tissue. Orthognathic surgery

The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome in the general childhood population is 1-2% and the most common cause is adenotonsillar hypertrophy. However, beyond adenotonsillar hypertrophy, there are other highly prevalent causes of this syndrome in children. The causes are often multifactorial and include muscular hypotonia, dentofacial abnormalities, soft tissue hypertrophy of the airway, and neurological disorders). Collaboration between different specialties involved in the care of these children is essential, given the wide variability of conditions and how frequently diffe

INTRODUCTION: The association of sella turcica bridging and various dental anomalies has been an area of interest for researchers. Based on the evidence of a common embryologic origin between sella turcica and the teeth, the objectives of this study were to measure the dimensions of sella turcica and to test whether an association exists between sella bridging and impacted canines.
METHODS: Orthodontic records comprising standard-quality lateral cephalograms and dental panoramic radiographs were selected. Thirty-one patients with palatally impacted canines (20 female, 11 male; mean age, 18.4

Radiculomegaly of a tooth is a rare condition. When it is associated with other dental abnormalities, facial dysmorphism and congenital cataracts, the condition is named as oculofaciocardiodental (OFCD) syndrome. This is an X-linked dominant trait, reported only in women, suggesting that it is lethal in males. The most consistent and pathognomic dental finding of OFCD is radiculomegaly (extremely long roots), particularly of the canines and occasionally of other teeth including premolars and incisors, which can easily be diagnosed on dental panoramic radiographs by a dentist or an orthodontist

AIMS: The aim of the present study was to evaluate if cranial dysfunctions felt by osteopaths could correlate with sagittal dysmorphologies diagnosed by orthodontists, using cephalometric traces in the sagittal plane. Metholology: One hundred and six children between 6 and 12 years old (42 boys and 64 girls) were tested by an osteopath to determine if the cranial movement felt was considered to be eased in flexion or extension. To test reproducibility intra-operator, 27 randomly selected subjects were tested twice, at a one-month interval by the same osteopath before the start of their orthodo

Ameloblastic carcinoma and ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma are rare malignancies arising in odontogenic epithelium within the jaws. Gardner syndrome is a multifaceted autosomal dominant condition, which results in multiple dentofacial anomalies along with premalignant colon polyp formation and tumor formation in the skin and other organs. We report a case of ameloblastic carcinoma with features of ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma and extensive clear cell change and melanin pigmentation in a patient with clinical features of Gardner syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, odontogenic carcinoma

The kinetics of metal ions release from orthodontic appliances in in vitro, in in vivo on pigs, and in vivo trials on patients (where hair samples were taken) was discussed. We have evaluated (by means of ICP-OES and ISO 17025) and compared the mass of Cr and Ni ions released. Not all the metal ions released from the appliance were transferred to hair tissue. The transfer factor was expressed as coefficient ω and evaluated as: ωCr(patients) 33.0%, ωCr(pigs) 17.2%, ωNi(patients) 49.8%, ωNi(pigs) 0.553%. The kinetics was described by a power function. Coefficient ω was used to combine the models

Hemangiomas are tumors identifed by rapid endothelial cell proliferation in early infancy, followed by involution over time. All other abnormalities are malformations resulting from anomalous development of vascular plexuses. The malformations have a normal endothelial cell growth cycle that affects the veins, the capillaries or the lymphatics and they do not involute. Hemangiomas are the most common tumors of infancy and are characterized by a proliferating and involuting phase. They are seen more commonly in whites than in blacks, more in females than in males in a ratio of 3:1.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this research was to identify the etiologic factors associated with palatally impacted canines and buccally impacted canines in a Chinese population by using the cone-beam computed tomography technique.
METHODS: Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography scans of 170 Chinese subjects with impacted maxillary canines and 170 age- and sex-matched subjects without impaction were used. Impacted canine subjects were divided into 2 groups: those with palatally impacted canines and those with buccally impacted canines. One rater analyzed the cone-beam computed tomography data

The interceptive orthodontic treatment of patients with complex dentofacial abnormalities is frequently inefficient and produces less than ideal outcomes. Therefore, postponing therapy to a single-phase surgical-orthodontic approach might be considered a reasonable option. However, other relevant aspects of the patient's quality of life, such as possible psychosocial problems and functional impairments, should also be considered before deciding whether to intercept a severe dentofacial malocclusion while the patient is still growing, or wait and treat later. This case report describes the nons

INTRODUCTION: The characteristics of patients who seek and accept orthognathic surgery appear to be changing over time but have not been well documented in the 21st century.
METHODS: Records for patients who had orthognathic surgery at the University of North Carolina from 1996 to 2000 and from 2006 to 2010 were reviewed to collect data for changes in the prevalence of patients with mandibular deficiency (Class II), maxillary deficiency or mandibular prognathism (Class III), long face, and asymmetry problems. The changes were compared with those in previous time periods and at other locations

Cone-beam computed tomography provides orthodontists with 3-dimensional images of the craniofacial region and valuable information for diagnosis and treatment planning of craniofacial or dental anomalies. However, a narrow focus on the skeletal and dental contributions to malocclusion can cause failure to identify skeletal or soft-tissue pathologies of the craniofacial structures unrelated to the orthodontic concerns. Two cases are presented that demonstrate skeletal and soft-tissue anomalies identified as incidental findings on cone-beam computed tomography scans of asymptomatic orthodontics

Triple X syndrome (47,XXX) is a numerical chromosomal alteration that affects 1/1,000 women, in which the woman is born with an extra X chromosome. Some oral changes have been reported in the literature, as hypodontia, influence on deposition of crown enamel and discrepancies in cephalometric measurements. Other systemic complications may lead to oral abnormalities similar to those seen in triple X patients, such as congenital hypothyroidism (CH). This paper reports a triple X syndrome case associated with CH later treated. Besides delay in cognitive and intellectual development, the patient h

The essential feature of paediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is increased upper airway resistance during sleep presenting clinically as snoring. Paediatric SDB is a continuum ranging from primary snoring (PS), which is not associated with gas exchange abnormalities or significant sleep fragmentation, to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) with complete upper airway obstruction, hypoxaemia, and obstructive hypoventilation. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy, obesity and craniofacial disharmonies are important predisposing factors in the development and progression of paediatric SDB. Clinical symptom

OBJECTIVE: This prospective cross-sectional study design was performed to define reference values for the facial surfaces of 3-6-year-old boys and girls using three-dimensional surface cephalometry.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 2290 standardized three-dimensional facial images from 3 to 6-year-old preschool children were separated by gender and assigned to four age categories. All children were Caucasian and revealed no evidence of dentofacial abnormalities. On each image, 31 cephalometric landmarks were marked, resulting in 35 (19 frontal, six lateral, 10 paired) distances and eight angl
