Association of frailty index with incident complete tooth loss among middle-aged and older Chinese adults: a longitudinal cohort study based on CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss is a severe oral health condition among middle-aged and older adults and is associated with impaired mastication, nutritional problems, and reduced quality of life. Frailty-a state of increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes-may represent an underexplored factor associated with oral health outcomes, but population-based evidence from China remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the 35-item Frailty Index (FI35) and incident complete tooth loss using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). METHODS: A

68Ga-citrate visualization study on ferroptosis through transferrin receptor 1 in periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: The loss of alveolar bone in periodontitis is linked to ferroptosis mediated by Transferrin Receptor 1 (TfR1). This study employed a multimethod approach integrating in vitro and in vivo experiments to investigate the utility of gallium-68 citrate (68Ga-citrate), a high-affinity iron-mimetic tracer, for the non-invasive, dynamic positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging of ferroptosis and periodontal remodeling in vivo. METHODS: In vitro, MC3T3-E1 were stimulated with Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to model the inflammatory microenvironme

Association between conventional cigarette smoking behavior and peri-implantitis: a survey-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although smoking is a well-recognized risk indicator for peri-implantitis (PI), the association between the intensity of current smoking and PI remains insufficiently characterized. This study investigated the association between smoking exposure, categorized according to daily cigarette consumption, and PI in a survey-based cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 1,021 patients with at least one functional dental implant were included. Peri-implant conditions were classified at the patient level according to the implant site showing the poorest peri-implant condition in each p

Cold atmospheric plasma for implant surface decontamination and osseointegration: a scoping review with implications for peri-implantitis management.

BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis is a biofilm-associated inflammatory condition leading to progressive bone loss around dental implants. Effective management requires both implant surface decontamination and re-establishment of osseointegration. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has emerged as a promising approach due to its antimicrobial activity and its ability to modify implant surface properties. METHODS: This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar was performed to identify relevant st

An Efficient Detection Platform Based on Mesoporous Au@Cr2O3 Particles with Schwarz P Surface for Precise Periodontitis Metabolite Profiling.

Matrix materials with high desorption and ionization efficiency are crucial for the sensitive and accurate metabolite profiling in matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). Herein, we develop an efficient detection platform based on Au nanoparticles decorated mesoporous Cr2O3 (Au@mCr2O3) particles with a single primitive continuous structure (i.e., Schwarz P surface) as the matrix. Owing to the low-tortuosity mesoporous pathways and customized chemical composition, the Au@mCr2O3 exhibits high-efficiency light absorption and electron transfer, showing great poten

A Secret Worth Telling: The Salivary Secret (Ory) Affair.

Secretory carcinoma (SC) of the salivary gland is a low-grade, slowly growing tumour. However, cytological diagnosis of SC is often challenging due to its morphological mimics. Characteristic cytoplasmic vacuolation seen in SC can be displayed in many tumours. However, careful evaluation of architecture, cytological content and background can assist in a definite diagnosis on FNAC. Application of immunocytochemistry on cell blocks can further aid in diagnosis.

World Small Animal Veterinary Association Global Dental Guidelines.

Dental, oral and maxillofacial diseases are the most common conditions seen in small animal veterinary practice. They may not only create significant pain but also infection. As such, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association believes that un- and undertreated oral and dental diseases pose a significant animal welfare concern. Dentistry is an area of veterinary medicine, which is still undertaught and thus is subject to many myths and misconceptions. Effective teaching of veterinary dentistry in the veterinary curriculum is the key to progression of the discipline. This will greatly improv

Facial nerve: paralyses, surgical approaches, rehabilitation.

The seventh cranial nerve (also called the facial nerve) is a neuroanatomical structure that arises from the brainstem near the lower part of the pons, enters the facial canal through the fundus of the internal auditory meatus, and finally emerges from the stylomastoid foramen, giving branches to the facial muscles. It innervates not only these muscles but also provides fibers to glands, including the lacrimal, salivary, and sublingual glands; therefore, malfunction of this nerve may result in dire clinical consequences. Because it is located mainly within bone, morphological variations may re

Hemifacial spasm: a nodal, stretch-mediated paradigm beyond neurovascular compression.

BACKGROUND: Hemifacial spasm (HFS) has traditionally been interpreted as a neurovascular compression syndrome, in which arterial contact at the root exit zone induces focal demyelination and hyperexcitability of the facial nerve. Although this framework underpins the clinical success of microvascular decompression (MVD), multiple consistent observations remain difficult to reconcile with a purely compression-based mechanism, including the high prevalence of neurovascular contact in asymptomatic individuals, the rapid and reproducible reversibility of symptoms after surgery, and the limited and

Tissue-Engineered Fibrous Nerve Conduits Link Facial Nerve Repair with Central Network Reorganization.

Peripheral nerve injury leads to persistent motor and sensory dysfunction and is increasingly recognized to induce alterations in central sensorimotor networks. However, most current repair strategies primarily focus on peripheral regeneration, with limited understanding of its relationship to central neural changes. Here, we performed clinical resting-state functional magnetic resonance (rs-fMRI) in patients with facial nerve injury and identified the sensorimotor network alterations associated with the nerve injury. Guided by the results, we developed a tissue-engineered fibrous nerve guidan

Modified apexification with MTA and non-vital bleaching as a comprehensive case management of a necrotic immature tooth: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Apexification for immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulp aims to close the root end without causing canal wall thickening or continuous root lengthening. Traditionally done using calcium hydroxide (CH), recently bioactive materials such as Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) have become a popular alternative due to its superior sealing abilities. While Regenerative endodontic Procedures (REP) offer potential for root development, their outcome remains unpredictable. This case report presents a modified apexification technique using MTA to facilitate continued root end development
