BACKGROUND: Partial sensory rhizotomy (PSR) is an "ultima ratio" procedure for patients with therapy-refractory trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The treatment can be offered to patients without a neurovascular conflict or to patients who did not benefit either from previous microvascular decompression (MVD) or from other interventional procedures. This study presents our experience with PSR.
METHODS: Our prospectively maintained database was searched for patients who underwent PSR. We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients with PSR. Clinical data, MR imaging, surgical videos, and OR not

Tumor-associated macrophages are key components of the tumor microenvironment in oral carcinogenesis; however, their role is not yet fully understood. We aimed to characterize the expression of macrophage (M) markers across the spectrum of oral carcinogenesis, including oral leukoplakias (OL) and oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs). This immunohistochemical study analyzed the macrophage density (cells/mm2) based on the expression of CD68 (pan-macrophage), CD163 (M2), and CD80 (M1) in 81 samples, including healthy mucosa (n = 16), OL (n = 30), and OSCC (n = 35), in both epithelial and subepit

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is an aggressive malignancy with a profoundly immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and persistently poor responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors. Recent evidence highlights dysregulated iron metabolism as a critical yet underrecognized driver of this immunosuppressive state. Excess intratumoral iron perturbs macrophage polarization toward pro-tumoral M2-like phenotypes through iron-sensing pathways, including HIF-1α stabilization, IL-10/STAT6 signaling, and NF-κB-mediated redox programs, driving T-cell suppression, angiogenesis, and extracellular matri

Myelosuppression is common during chemoradiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), but the prognostic impact of multilineage cytopenia remains unclear. This retrospective study evaluated a three-lineage cytopenia score in 576 patients with locally advanced NPC. The score (0-3) was defined as the number of lineages (leukocytes, hemoglobin, platelets) below normal limits. During a median follow-up of 74 months, higher cytopenia grades were significantly associated with worse overall survival, locoregional relapse-free survival, and distant metastasis-free survival (all P < 0.001). The score

BACKGROUND: Lip and oral cavity cancer (LOCC) accounts for a significant proportion of the overall burden of head and neck cancers, yet long-term sex-specific trends remain unclear. This study aimed to analyse sex-specific LOCC incidence trends in Spain from 1994 to 2023.
METHODS: An ecological study was conducted using modelled incidence data from the Global Burden of Disease 2023 (GBD). Age-standardised incidence rates (ASIRs) were calculated using the European Standard Population. Joinpoint regression was used to estimate annual percent changes (APCs) and average annual percent changes (AA

BACKGROUND: Post-radiation nasopharyngeal necrosis (PRNN) is a rare but life-threatening late complication in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been reported as a risk factor for PRNN; however, the impact of long-term glycaemic control on PRNN risk and severity remains unclear.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of diabetic patients with newly diagnosed NPC treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) between 2019 and 2022. Long-term glycaemic control was assessed using hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels obtained within 3

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is biologically and prognostically distinct from HPV-negative disease, and staging directly impacts treatment. The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and Union for International Cancer Control version 9 TNM staging system incorporates unequivocal imaging-detected and/or clinically detected extranodal extension (iENE) into clinical nodal staging and definitive pathologic extranodal extension into pathologic nodal staging. Additionally, it provides more explicit anatomic definitions for advanced local dise

OBJECTIVES: Postoperative complications remain a major challenge in the surgical management of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), particularly in the context of extensive resections and microvascular reconstruction. While comorbidity indices are commonly used for risk stratification, their predictive value relative to functional and procedural factors remains uncertain.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 401 consecutive patients undergoing curative-intent surgery for OSCC between 2017 and 2024. Postoperative complications within 30 days were graded according to

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus mutans modulates local immune responses in the oral mucosa and has been implicated in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) pathogenesis. Emerging evidence suggests that certain oral bacteria can influence viral infections through immune modulation. This case-control study aimed to determine whether the correlation between S. mutans and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) differs between OSCC patients and non-tumor controls, thereby elucidating potential bacterial-viral association in the tumor microenvironment.
METHODS: Unstimulated whole saliva samples were collected

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of tumours of the maxilla and hard palate is often associated with persistent functional and psychosocial impairment, making quality-of-life assessment an important component of rehabilitation evaluation. The objective of the present study was to assess the applicability and psychometric characteristics of an adapted bilingual (Russian-Kazakh) version of the UW-QOL v4.1 questionnaire in patients after surgical treatment of tumours of the maxilla, hard palate, and adjacent anatomical regions, as well as to analyse quality-of-life outcomes depending on the method o

Combined alterations of TP53 and CDKN2A are frequently observed in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC); however, their cooperative roles in oral carcinogenesis remain unclear. To investigate their interaction under carcinogenic stress, we generated Cdkn2a knock-in (KI) mice harboring a human-relevant R80X truncating mutation, along with Trp53 loss-of-function (LOF) mutants and exposed them to 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO). Partial loss of Cdkn2a combined with Trp53 heterozygosity was associated with increased STING-related inflammatory signaling and enhanced T-cell/NK-cell-associat

BACKGROUND: Xerostomia is a common and clinically relevant complaint in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), adversely affecting oral health, nutrition, and the quality of life. Neuroendocrine and autonomic dysregulation associated with MS may contribute to salivary gland dysfunction. It was hypothesized that MS patients with xerostomia would indicate higher salivary cortisol levels compared to individuals without xerostomia, the independent of self-reported anxiety.
METHODS: In this comparative cross-sectional study, 39 MS patients were enrolled, including 23 with xerostomia and 16 without

Immunotherapy has emerged as a cornerstone in the management of both recurrent/metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (R/M NPC) and locoregionally advanced NPC (LANPC). Evidence indicates that programmed death-1/programmed death ligand-1 (PD-1/PD-L1) inhibitors, whether administered as monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapy or antiangiogenic agents, can significantly improve outcomes in R/M NPC. For LANPC, incorporating immunotherapy into induction, concurrent chemoradiotherapy, and adjuvant phases has demonstrated potential benefits in enhancing antitumor immune responses and reducing t

High-precision tumor theranostic systems capable of real time monitoring are imperatively required for optimizing the spatial targeting accuracy during radiotherapy and surgical resection across clinical management of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the clinical application of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is impeded by the suboptimal reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation efficiency and inadequate visualization of redox procedure. In this study, we developed a theranostic platform HSF, featuring integrated tumor-specific near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging and photodynamic ROS ge

INTRODUCTION: Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) present a remarkable public health challenge worldwide. They are the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in low-resource regions. In rural and underserved populations, access to diagnostic facilities is limited, and delays in confirmation often result in late-stage presentations. Field screening camps frequently serve as the first and sometimes only point of contact for many at-risk individuals; however, conventional cytology relies on laboratory infrastructure and specialist

A rapidly growing palatal swelling poses a diagnostic challenge due to its wide differential, including odontogenic, epithelial, salivary gland, mesenchymal and haematolymphoid pathologies. We report the case of an elderly female with a history of treated breast carcinoma who presented with a solitary palatal mass. Clinical and radiographic findings initially raised suspicion of a metastatic lesion because of the patient's previous malignancy, rapid lesion enlargement, firm fixation, bone erosion, sinus extension and cervical lymphadenopathy. However, histopathological examination and immunohi
