Orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOC) are uncommon developmental odontogenic cysts of jaw. It was previously considered as an orthokeratinized variant of Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). OOC differs from OKC of its clinical and histological behavior. A 34-year-old male came for replacement of missing teeth in the right side of lower jaw. History revealed extraction of 46, 47, 48, and enucleation of cyst 15 years before for a radiolucent lesion of right posterior region, which was histologically diagnosed as orthokeratinized variant of OKC. On a radiographic evaluation, unilocular radiolucency

BACKGROUND: Developmental odontogenic cysts (DOCs) of the jawbones with overt luminal keratinization, i.e., odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC), are relatively uncommon in head and neck/oral pathology practice. Notably, atypical verrucopapillary epithelial proliferations (AVPEP) arising from the epithelium of DOCs have rarely been reported and range from verrucous epithelial hyperplasia with or without cytologic dysplasia to verrucous carcinoma (VC). Published examples of intraosseous VC developing ex-DOC are exceptionally limited, previously making assessm

Dentigerous cysts are common developmental odontogenic cysts that may compromise the eruption and morphology of developing teeth. Their management of children increasingly favors conservative approaches, particularly when tooth preservation is possible. Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) introduces additional clinical considerations due to enamel fragility, which may affect patient comfort and complicate postoperative hygiene. An eight-year-old boy with MIH presented with a dentigerous cyst associated with the unerupted mandibular right second molar (tooth 47), incidentally identified on a

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are locally aggressive developmental odontogenic cysts that may complicate diagnosis and management. A 61-year-old male underwent CBCT for implant planning. The scan showed a pericoronal lesion with a scalloped margin and minimal expansion suggestive of OKC. The lesion was enucleated; however, histopathology was inconclusive because of inflammation and recommended clinicoradiologic correlation. Follow-up was advised because of the lesion's recurrence potential. This case highlights the need for a systematic review of the full CBCT volume and multidisciplinary cor

Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) are rare developmental odontogenic cysts that may pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their overlapping clinical and radiographic features with other odontogenic lesions. We report a case of a 29-year-old woman who presented with pain and restricted mouth opening associated with an impacted right mandibular third molar. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a well-defined pericoronal radiolucency attached to the crown of the impacted tooth and extending to the distal root of the adjacent second molar. Based on the characteristic pericoronal locatio

BACKGROUND: Gingival cysts of the adult are rare developmental odontogenic cysts originating from the dental lamina. They usually present as single, small, bluish, noninflammatory swellings on the gingivae or alveolar mucosa. The aim of our study was to present one rare clinical case of a gingival cyst associated with inflammation hyperplasia in an adult.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old woman presented with an 18-month history of labial gingival enlargement and bleeding in her right upper anterior teeth. On intraoral examination, a single, sessile, round, noncystic lesion measuring 10 × 6 ×

Dentigerous cysts are developmental odontogenic cysts commonly associated with impacted teeth; however, their occurrence in young children involving developing premolars is relatively rare. This report describes the case of an eight-year-old male who presented with pain and swelling in the lower left posterior region of the jaw. Clinical examination revealed a grossly carious primary molar with buccal cortical expansion. Radiographic findings showed a well-defined unilocular radiolucency associated with the crown of the developing mandibular second premolar, causing displacement of the tooth b

INTRODUCTION: Odontogenic keratocysts are developmental odontogenic cysts that may occur as solitary lesions or as multiple jaw lesions. Multiple odontogenic keratocysts in young patients should raise suspicion of an underlying syndrome, particularly Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male was referred to the Dental Hospital of Hasanuddin University after a 9-month history of progressive left mandibular enlargement. Clinical and radiographic assessment revealed multiple cystic lesions involving the maxilla and mandible, with impacted teeth in several regions. Chest radiog

OBJECTIVE: This report describes an unusual case of a lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) residing between the roots of a mandibular first and second molar.
BACKGROUND: The LPC is a developmental odontogenic cyst, the majority situated along the lateral roots of the mandibular canines and premolars. The occurrence of an LPC solely confined to the molar region is extremely rare. Limited information regarding the LPC has appeared in the geriatric literature.
PATIENT PRESENTATION: A unilocular cyst-like lesion was incidentally discovered on extraoral and intraoral radiographic examinations involving

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aims to evaluate the relative representation of individual types of developmental odontogenic cysts (DOCs), especially from the perspective of syndromic and non-syndromic multiple DOCs in the Czech population. In addition, we also summarize the previous studies on the occurrence of multiple DOCs and provide a literature review of case reports and case series on non-syndromic multiple DOCs, particularly dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs).
METHODS: The study included histologically confirmed DOCs retrieved between January 1, 2012, and

Dentigerous cysts are the most common type of developmental odontogenic cysts. Multiple devices has been described for decompression. The current case report describes the use of a custom-made decompression appliance, designed through a digital workflow, in managing dentigerous cysts. A 7-year-old male patient with no prior medical history was referred to our oral surgery department due to swelling on the left side of the lower jaw. Upon intraoral examination and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), a provisional diagnosis of an inflammatory dentigerous cyst related to the impacted premolar w

Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental odontogenic cysts. Still, a secondarily infected dentigerous cyst in children that results in an extraoral fistula is rare and can present as a routine odontogenic abscess. In this paper, we present a case of a healthy 10-year-old girl with progressive pain, swelling, and purulent discharge of the left mandibular area documented for one month after outpatient antibiotic treatment. Clinical examination showed a fluctuant facial swelling with an external fistula, while CT revealed a well-defined unilocular cystic lesion with an unerupted mandib

Cystic lesions are more prevalent in jawbones than in other bones. Odontogenic cysts are typically painless and asymptomatic and often reach significant sizes before detection. Unlike odontogenic cysts of inflammatory origin, understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis and progression of developmental odontogenic cysts remains incomplete. This study aimed to elucidate the cause and mechanisms of bone resorption in developmental odontogenic cysts. First, single-cell RNA sequencing was conducted for one of the most common developmental odontogenic cysts, dentigerous cysts (DCs), and the obta

Dentigerous cysts are the second most common developmental odontogenic cysts that develop around the crown of unerrupted teeth with the maxillary canine region being one of the common sites of occurrence. The cystic lining of this lesion has been shown to develop into ameloblastoma, Muco epidermoid carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinomas. However, the development of cholesterol granuloma (CG) in the cystic lining of a dentigerous cyst is extremely rare. CG is a histological observation distinguished by the presence of a conglomeration of connective tissue and granulation tissue. The condition

BACKGROUND: Orofacial cysts are pathologic cavities that could be symptomatic and may cause facial disfigurement. The only epidemiologic report of such lesions in Southeast Nigeria studied jaw cysts from 1987 to 1996. New studies reflecting recent research findings and classifications on the subject in Southeast Nigeria are lacking.
AIM: To determine the prevalence and distribution of orofacial cysts in a tertiary hospital in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria.
METHODS: A 10-year retrospective study of patients with orofacial cysts diagnosed by histology was carried out.
RESULTS: Orofacial cysts cons

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a partial manifestation of Gorlin syndrome (GS), resulting from the abnormal activation of the hedgehog signaling pathway. OKC predominantly occurs in young adults and is mostly asymptomatic at the time of initial diagnosis. As OKC is asymptomatic, GS can be challenging to diagnose in certain instances. In this study, we attempted to identify asymptomatic GS from sporadic OKC cases using a previously developed gene panel for GS.
METHODS: Genomic DNA was extracted from patient samples. These DNA samples were analyzed using the AmpliSeq Custom DNA Pan

Developmental cysts are pathological epithelial-lined cavities arising in various organs as a result of systemic or hereditary diseases. Molecular mechanisms involved in the formation of developmental odontogenic cysts (OCs) are not fully understood yet; the cystogenesis of renal cysts originating from the autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) has been, however, explored in much greater detail. This narrative review aimed i) to summarize molecular and cellular processes involved in the formation and growth of developmental OCs, especially dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic

Among developmental odontogenic cysts, the dentigerous type is the second most prevailing one. It is a benign intraosseous lesion commonly affecting the mandibular region. Dentigerous cysts present a high prevalence in children as they can be caused by the eruption of permanent teeth or the infection of deciduous ones. The adopted treatment modalities include enucleation (cystectomy), marsupialization, and decompression. Decompression maintains communication between the cyst and the oral medium through a sutured fixed device, namely an acrylic stent or a pretrimmed disposable suction tube. In

Odontogenic cysts are categorized as inflammatory and developmental. Of the developmental odontogenic cysts, the dentigerous cyst is the most common and by definition is attached to the cervical region of an unerupted tooth. The cyst envelops the crown forming a sac. However, there are other developmental cysts, and rarely, odontogenic tumors, that can have a similar clinical and radiographic presentation as dentigerous cyst, including odontogenic keratocyst, orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst and ameloblastoma, unicystic type. Understanding the key histologic differences of these cysts will ai

Dentigerous cyst is a type of developmental odontogenic cysts that arises from the crown impacted, embedded or unerupted teeth that standardly managed by Caldwell-luc procedure, which is found to be associated with morbidities and complications. Endonasal endoscopic removal is a minimally invasive approach aiming to prevent morbidities and complications. The aim of this article is to study the advantages of the endonasal endoscopic approach in managing different cases of dentigerous cyst and ectopic teeth. In this article, we reported three different cases (two pediatric and one adult), one pr
