Five Years Follow-up of a Spontaneous Eruption of an Impacted Mandibular Premolar Associated with a Dentigerous Cyst Treated by Marsupialization.

Dentigerous cysts (DC) are developmental odontogenic cysts associated with impacted or partially erupted teeth; they can occur at any location of the jaw. Being generally asymptomatic, they are fortuitously discovered when radiographs are taken to investigate a tooth eruption failure. In this report, we present a case of a 10-year-old girl presented with the absence of the right second mandibular premolar and retention of the right second primary molar. After clinical and radiological examinations a preliminary diagnosis of the DC was made and confirmed later histopathologically. The lesion wa

Giant follicular cyst with maxillary sinus and pterygomaxillary space extension.

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous, follicular, cysts are developmental odontogenic cysts of reduced adamantine epithelium origin, associated with an impacted tooth. They are the second most frequent cystic pathology after inflammatory cysts. Although the frequency of dentigerous cysts associated with upper third molars is far lower than the mandibular ones, their complications are nothing but ordinary. Most of the times asymptomatic, being discovered during routine x-ray examinations, maxillary follicular cysts can grow to important size, altering the position of adjacent teeth, producing osteolysis of

Multiple Orthokeratinized Odontogenic Cysts: A Report of Two Cases and Review of the Literature.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOC) are developmental odontogenic cysts characterised by an orthokeratinized stratified squamous epithelial lining. They were originally believed to be part of the spectrum of Odontogenic Keratocyst, but are now considered to be a distinct entity. They are rare, making up approximately 1% of all odontogenic cysts and they usually occur singly. In this paper we present two new cases of multiple OOCs, and compare them to previous case reports of multiple lesions. The clinical and pathological features are discussed, along with possible diagnostic pitfalls.

Relative frequency of dentigerous cyst in Iranian population: A 20-year retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Dentigerous cyst (DC) is the most common type of developmental odontogenic cysts which apparently develops via accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and crown of the tooth. The aim of this study is to analyze the frequency of DC in Iranian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The files of oral pathology, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, served as the source of the materials from 1992 to 2012 for this study. All lesions diagnosed as DCs were subjected to microscopic reevaluation. Patient's age, sex, location, and microscopic characteristics were reco

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst with calcification: A rare case report of a distinct entity.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a relatively rare odontogenic cyst, distinct from odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). In the 4th edition of WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumors (2017), OOC has been included as a separate entity in the category of developmental odontogenic cysts. It presents as a unilocular radiolucent lesion in the posterior mandible and is frequently related to impacted teeth, thus mimicking dentigerous cyst. Due to low local aggressiveness and no association with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, it does not show tendency to recur. When compared to OKC, OOC ex

Expression of Ki-67 in odontogenic cysts: A comparative study between odontogenic keratocysts, radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic cysts are the most common cysts of the jaws and are formed from the remnants of the odontogenic apparatus. Among these odontogenic cysts, radicular cysts (RCs) (about 60% of all diagnosed jaw cysts), dentigerous cysts (DCs) (16.6% of all jaw cysts) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) (11.2% of all developmental odontogenic cysts) are the most common. The behavior of any lesion is generally reflected by its growth potential. Growth potential is determined by measuring the cell proliferative activity. The cell proliferative activity is measured by various

Conservative Treatment of Dentigerous Cyst by Marsupialization in a Young Female Patient: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Dentigerous cysts (DCs) are the most prevalent developmental odontogenic cysts that occur in middle-aged individuals. They frequently originate from the epithelial remnants of tooth-forming organs. Hereby, we present a case of a 13-year-old young female patient presenting with DC that was treated successfully by marsupialization. The patient's chief complaint was the crowding of the anterior teeth. Clinical examination showed that the patient had all her permanent teeth present with a retained mandibular left second primary molar that was previously treated by pulpectomy. The radiographic exam

Association between tooth impaction and odontogenic lesions: A matched case-control study.

Background: Impacted tooth is common in dental practice. Dentists usually remove them if they are associated with any pathologic sign or symptom. The challenge is whether to extract the asymptomatic tooth or not. This study was conducted to determine the association between developmental odontogenic cysts and tumors and impacted and unerupted teeth, if left untreated. Methods: In this matched case-control study, 262 participants were recruited in case and control groups to evaluate the association between the presence of odontogenic cyst and tumors and unerupted and impacted teeth in patient r

Non syndromic synchronous multiple odontogenic keratocysts in a western Indian population: A series of four cases.

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are developmental odontogenic cysts affecting the maxillofacial region and their association with a syndrome especially Naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is a common occurrence in comparison to non syndromic multiple OKCs. In a first, we present a series of four non syndromic cases with multiple OKCs in western Indian population. The presence of multiple OKC in our present case series may be because of the multifocal nature of the lesion rather than its association with any syndrome. Thus, a comprehensive evaluation of any patients reporting with mult

Bi-maxillary dentigerous cyst in a non-syndromic child - review of literature with a case presentation.

Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental odontogenic cysts of the jaw, which usually occur in the second and third decade of life. It is most frequently associated with impacted mandibular third molar teeth and impacted canines. Bilateral/multiple dentigerous cysts are rare and typically associated with developmental syndromes. Non-syndromic dentigerous cyst occurring bilaterally or involving both arches at the same time is very rare. Here, we discuss the review of literature with a case of unusual occurrence of non-syndromic bi-maxillary dentigerous cysts in a child.

Treatment of Maxillary Glandular Odontogenic Cyst Involving the Same Place of Previously Treated Traumatic Bone Cyst.

Glandular odontogenic cyst is a rare developmental odontogenic cysts of the jaws having an aggressive behavior. The most common site of occurrence is the anterior mandible, and it is widely seen in middle-aged people. It is suggested that trauma could be a precipitating factor for its occurrence. This article presents the diagnosis and treatment of a case of glandular odontogenic cyst at anterior maxilla that occurred at the same localization of a traumatic bone cyst, 5 years after its management.

Vegetable Granuloma in Pindborg's Tumor: A Rare Encounter.

Vegetable granuloma (VG) or pulse granuloma is an enigmatic lesion in terms of its designated nomenclature and etiopathogenesis. It is less often reported in the walls of inflammatory and developmental odontogenic cysts. It can present different histological characteristics, possibly related to the length of time in the tissue and its location. Due to its deceptive appearance, it can often mislead the pathologists. Here, we report an unusual encounter of VG in a Pindborg's tumor, which is the first of its kind in the literature.

Bilateral orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst: A rare case report and review.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a developmental cyst of jaw and was initially considered by the World Health Organization (1992) as the uncommon orthokeratinized variant of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). However, studies have shown that OOC has peculiar clinicopathologic aspects when compared with other developmental odontogenic cysts, especially OKC. So orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst now stands out to be a distinct entity. Clinically, it occurs as a single cyst, shows a predilection for males and is most often found in the second to the fifth decade. Its bilateral occurrence is e

Eruption of impacted permanent teeth after treatment of a dentigerous cyst: a case report.

Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental odontogenic cysts. It is a benign and asymptomatic intraosseous lesion that affects the bones of the maxillofacial complex, interfering with tooth eruption. Although enucleation is the treatment of choice, marsupialization is the better option for large cysts involving unerupted permanent teeth. The purpose of this article is to report the eruption of impacted permanent mandibular right canine and first and second premolars after marsupialization of an infected dentigerous cyst. Two years after marsupialization and orthodontic treatment, the

Automated classification of four types of developmental odontogenic cysts.

Odontogenic cysts originate from remnants of the tooth forming epithelium in the jaws and gingiva. There are various kinds of such cysts with different biological behaviours that carry different patient risks and require different treatment plans. Types of odontogenic cysts can be distinguished by the properties of their epithelial layers in H&E stained samples. Herein we detail a set of image features for automatically distinguishing between four types of odontogenic cyst in digital micrographs and evaluate their effectiveness using two statistical classifiers - a support vector machine (SVM)
