Emulating Clinical Diagnostic Reasoning for Jaw Cysts with Machine Learning.

The detection and classification of cystic lesions of the jaw is of high clinical relevance and represents a topic of interest in medical artificial intelligence research. The human clinical diagnostic reasoning process uses contextual information, including the spatial relation of the detected lesion to other anatomical structures, to establish a preliminary classification. Here, we aimed to emulate clinical diagnostic reasoning step by step by using a combined object detection and image segmentation approach on panoramic radiographs (OPGs). We used a multicenter training dataset of 855 OPGs

Case report: Unilateral transnasal endoscopic marsupialization of nasopalatine duct cyst.

Nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) is the most common type of non-odontogenic cysts of the jaw. It has been treated with complete surgical resection using a sublabial or palatine approach. However, complete removal of the cyst can be accompanied by postoperative complications including oronasal fistula. Recently, endoscopic marsupialization for the disease has been advocated, but there are still few reports regarding the surgery. Herein, we report a case of NPDC that was treated with unilateral transnasal endoscopic marsupialization. A 43-year-old man with no relevant previous medical history was r

Aneurysmal Bone Cyst Plus Lesions: A Case Report and a Literature Review.

The intraosseous osteolytic lesions mainly involving the metaphyseal region of vertebrae and long bones were diagnosed as aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs). Further, an ABC was known as an ossifying hematoma. It is considered an expanding osteolytic lesion consisting of blood-filled spaces of variable sizes separated by connective tissue septa containing trabeculae of osteoid tissue and osteoclast giant cells. It is frequently reported to involve long bones; however, only 1.9% prevalence is seen in jaw bones. It represents a very small percentage of all non-odontogenic tumors. ABC shows variations

Radiomics in bone pathology of the jaws.

OBJECTIVE: To define which are and how the radiomics features of jawbone pathologies are extracted for diagnosis, predicting prognosis and therapeutic response. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using eight databases and gray literature. Two independent observers rated these articles according to exclusion and inclusion criteria. 23 papers were included to assess the radiomics features related to jawbone pathologies. Included studies were evaluated by using JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies. RESULTS: Agnostic features were mined fr

Nasopalatine Duct Cyst with Impacted Inverted Mesiodens: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) is a non-odontogenic, developmental epithelial cyst that accounts for 1% of maxillary cysts. It often arises due to the spontaneous proliferation of the epithelial tissue remnants, although trauma, bacterial infection, and mucous retention may also trigger the proliferation. Owing to its slow-growing, asymptomatic nature, the cyst is often discovered as an accidental finding during routine clinical and radiographic examinations. However, the majority of cases present as a tiny, asymptomatic swelling just posterior to the palatine papillae. Radiographically, it app

Histopathologic spectrum and clinical correlation of lesions of jaw - a series of 60 cases.

Odontogenic tumors have the potential for the development of malformations of the teeth as well as the surrounding tissue. Sound knowledge of various types of jaw lesions and their characteristics will help the clinician with timely measures and management. Our main aim was to study the histopathological nature of various jaw lesions retrieved from biopsies and resected specimens. Consecutive 60 cases of jaw lesions were analyzed. Odontogenic cyst, odontogenic tumor, fibro-osseous lesions, and giant cell lesions were included in this study. Lesions of the oral cavity, soft tissue lesions, seco

Nasolabial cyst in an elderly patient: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Nasolabial Cyst (NC) or Klestadt's cyst is a relatively rare soft tissue developmental lesion of nasal alar region accounting for 0.7% of all non-odontogenic cysts. NC usually presents as an asymptomatic swelling located in the anterior region of the maxilla lateral to midline-resulting in obliteration of nasolabial sulcus, nasal vestibule and maxillary labial sulcus and facial asymmetry-often observed on early stages by most patients due to cosmetics issues. CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of an asymptomatic facial swelling in the left upper lip reg

An atypical presentation of a bilateral nasolabial cyst: a case report.

The nasolabial cyst is a rare, non-odontogenic, soft tissue cyst that develops submucosally in the anterior nasal floor. This cyst accounts for 0.7% of all non-odontogenic cysts. Bilateral nasolabial cyst represents only 10% of the cases. This cyst originates from the remnants of embryonic nasolacrimal duct tissue. Generally, patients present with swelling and facial deformity and rarely local pain. The definite diagnosis should be based on clinical, radiological and above all histopathologic findings. The treatment is enucleation of the cystic tissue. Following is a case report of a bilateral

Use of Cone-beam Computed Tomography as a Critical Component in the Diagnosis of an Infected Nasopalatine Duct Cyst Mimicking Chronic Apical Abscess: A Case Report.

Nasopalatine duct cysts (NPDCs) and other nonodontogenic lesions of the oral cavity may mimic odontogenic pathoses. We present a case of a 22-year-old man with a history of dental trauma and a lesion displaying the typical clinical and radiographic signs of a chronic apical abscess- a buccal sinus tract that was traced to a radiolucent area in the periapex of a maxillary central incisor. A comprehensive diagnostic process that included a cone-beam computed tomographic scan and a histopathologic examination of the lesion after complete enucleation led to the final diagnosis of an infected NPDC.

Clinicopathologic features of nasopalatine duct cysts: A retrospective study in two Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology referral centers.

BACKGROUND: Nasopalatine duct cyst (NDC) is the most common non-odontogenic cyst in the oral cavity. Clinically it is not difficult to suspect these lesions based on clinical and radiographic appearance. However, the histopathological diagnosis may be difficult due to the broad morphological diversity of these lesions. The objective was to analyze the clinicopathological features of NDCs diagnosed in two oral and maxillofacial pathology services in the Brazilian northeast. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective clinicopathologic study was performed. A total of 18,121 clinical records of oral l

The oral lymphoepithelial cyst (OLC) is an uncommon lesion whose pathogenesis remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to report the clinicopathologic features of the OLCs and to verify a possible association between OLCs and subgemmal neurogenous plaque (SNP) in the posterior lateral region of the tongue. A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. A total of 106,282 biopsy records of oral and maxillofacial lesions from six oral pathology services in Brazil were analyzed. All cases of OLCs were reviewed, and clinical and histopathological data were collected

Pediatric Odontogenic and Maxillofacial Bone Pathology: A Global Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although pathology in the maxillary and mandibular bones is rare in young patients, the differential diagnosis is broad. The World Health Organization (WHO) updated its classification of maxillofacial bone pathology in 2017. Using these updated guidelines, a systematic review of common maxillofacial bone lesions in the pediatric population was performed. METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted capturing English language articles from inception to July 2020. Thirty-one articles were identified that described the frequency of maxillofacial bone pathology. Data were extracted and orga

Florid Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia with a Concurrent Glandular Odontogenic Cyst.

The presence of non-odontogenic cysts associated with benign fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws has been well documented. However, literature is scant when describing benign fibro-osseous lesions with associated odontogenic cysts. This case report highlights the presence of a concurrent developmental odontogenic cyst, glandular odontogenic cyst with extensive squamous metaplasia, in a patient with florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD). The postulated pathogenesis of these synchronous lesions is discussed along with a review of current literature. Surgical treatment is discouraged for florid CO
