Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst is a distinct developmental jaw cyst commonly misinterpreted at the clinical and radiographic level due to overlap with other keratinizing and tooth-associated cysts. Hence, 1,200 biopsy specimens were analyzed, identifying 30 histologically confirmed OOC cases. OOC constituted 10.0% of all odontogenic cysts and 2.5% of the total biopsy cohort. The majority of lesions affected males between 21-30 years and were predominantly located in the posterior mandible, frequently involving impacted teeth, especially the mandibular third molar. The study highlights its r

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to evaluate bone healing after enucleation of cystic jaw lesions using region of interest (ROI)-based gray value analysis on panoramic radiographs. Additionally, this study aims to quantitatively assess early postoperative changes in the lesion area and to determine whether grayscale values approach those of the contralateral healthy bone. Furthermore, it seeks to investigate the applicability of panoramic radiography as a reliable and accessible tool for objective radiographic follow-up in routine clinical practice. Therefore, grayscale analysis provides

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, encompassing conditions such as ischemic heart disease and ischemic stroke (IS), remain the leading global cause of death and disability. While traditional cardiovascular risk factors (eg, hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis) are well established, emerging research underscores the critical role of gut microbiota in the development and progression of both cardiac and cerebrovascular events. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication system involving neural, immune, and metabolic pathways that link gut microbial activity to

Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) is a rare and challenging jawbone malignancy often linked to odontogenic cysts. With minimal connection to oral mucosa and a low incidence rate, PIOC presents significant diagnostic difficulties, often mimicking other odontogenic lesions. Histogenesis and the correct classification of the lesion remains debated, with theories suggesting origins from odontogenic epithelium or cysts. Chronic inflammation may contribute to malignant transformation, though genetic predispositions could also play a role in the pathogenesis. This review underscores the current k

Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) is a rare malignant tumor of the jaw, often diagnosed as odontogenic cysts or osteomyelitis. We report a case of a 53-year-old woman who was initially diagnosed with mandibular osteomyelitis resulting from pericoronitis of the left lower third molar. The patient underwent tooth extraction under general anesthesia, and the granulation tissue from the extraction socket was sent for histopathological evaluation, revealing moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Postoperative imaging revealed significant bone resorption, invasion of the mandibular c

BACKGROUND: Despite the comprehensive classifications provided by the WHO, the most common lesions include radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, ameloblastomas, and odontomas. The piezoelectric technique has shown effectiveness in removing intraosseous pathologies by relying on ultrasonic microvibrations, which help preserve soft and vascular tissues. Precision in manipulating intraosseous pathology can impact the prognosis and improve the surgical procedure by controlling hemorrhage and promoting microscopic benefits. While previous research has compared the advantages

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a radiolucent jaw lesion often mistaken for similar conditions like ameloblastomas on panoramic radiographs. Accurate diagnosis is vital for effective management, but manual image interpretation can be inconsistent. While deep learning algorithms in AI have shown promise in improving diagnostic accuracy for OKCs, their performance across studies is still unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of AI models in detecting OKC from panoramic radiographs.
METHODS: A systematic search was perfor

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastic fibroma (AF), ameloblastic fibrodentinoma (AFD), and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) are rare mixed odontogenic tumors. While some authors propose that some cases may evolve into odontomas, other tumors with aggressive clinical features suggest a neoplastic origin. A subset of AF and AFD/AFO harbor the pathogenic BRAF p.V600E mutation. SOX9, known for its role in the differentiation of various cell types, particularly in chondrogenesis, has not been previously studied in odontogenic tumors. In this study, we report the clinicopathologic features of a large internat

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) is also known as Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). In the most common manifestation, GGS is diagnosed based on multiple cysts in the jaw bones, namely OKCs (odontogenic keratocysts). Other features might include major and minor clinical and radiological criteria to confirm this syndrome. Quite commonly, BCCs (basal cell carcinomas), bifid ribs, palmar and plantar pits, and ectopic calcification of the falx cerebri can be found in the majority of patients. Currently, the mutation of the PTCH1 gene seems to be responsible for GGS occurrence, while the male

OBJECTIVES: We propose a multi-scale jaw cyst segmentation model, AConvLSTM U-Net, which is based on bidirectional dense connections and attention mechanisms to achieve accurate automatic segmentation of mandibular cyst images.
METHODS: A dataset consisting of 2592 jaw cyst images was used. AConvLSTM U-Net designs a MBC on the encoding path to enhance feature extraction capabilities. A DPD was used to connect the encoder and decoder, and a bidirectional ConvLSTM was introduced in the jump connection to obtain rich semantic information. A decoding block based on scSE was then used on the decod

UNLABELLED: An odontogenic epithelium-derived developing cyst of the mandible is known as an odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification from 2005, OKCs were referred to as keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs) and were thought to be cystic neoplasms. As of 2017, the WHO again switched KCOT back to OKC, as there was a lack of support for their justification as a tumor entity. This article presents a rare case report of single and multiple OKCs located in both the maxilla and mandible in male and female pediatric patients, demonstrating conser

OBJECTIVES: There are two types of keratinized cystic lesions arising in the jaw - developmental cysts of odontogenic origin (odontogenic keratocyst - OKC and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst - OOC) and epidermoid cyst (EC) of undetermined origin. These lesions have overlapping histopathological features and their treatment depends on the correct diagnosis. The aim of our study was to determine diagnostically relevant differences between these cysts and to establish criteria for diagnosing intraosseous EC.

The jaw bones can manifest various cysts and tumors of different origins and etiologies. Any bone lesions lacking any potential odontogenic origin might require more accurate diagnostics, adequate investigation, and careful patient anamnesis. In cases of sharply demarcated radiolucency or mixed radiolucent-radiopaque radiological appearance lesions, they can sometimes extend between the displaced tooth roots or cause their resorption. The scope of cortical bone in radiographic studies might have a different status, and lesions can spread outside of the bone. If no odontogenic feature is presen

BACKGROUND: Cysts are common pathology in the maxillofacial area. The treatment of choice consists of enucleation, regeneration of the created defect and achieving a primary closure. The platelet rich fibrin (PRF), developed by Joseph Choukroun, has been commonly use in the area of oral regeneration, thanks to its biological properties; some literature suggests the application in cystic cavities to not only avoids the collapse of tissue but also help regeneration be achieved in a shorter time, however, changes in the nature of the cells and lack of evidence in the literature continue to be a c

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, benign, expansile lesions of the jaws, often associated with odontogenic cysts like dentigerous cysts, presenting diagnostic challenges due to their variable radiographic and histopathological features. This case report describes an ABC associated with a dentigerous cyst in the mandible, initially misdiagnosed as central giant cell granuloma (CGCG). A 19-year-old male presented with an asymptomatic semi-erupted right mandibular third molar (#48), and panoramic radiography revealed a multilocular radiolucent lesion (22.9 × 46.5 × 20.4 mm) in the posterior

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is rarely a clinical diagnosis on first take; hence, data pertaining to primary ABC assists in differentiating lesions from related pathologies. The cases of primary ABCs were managed by curettage even with extensive cortical plate expansion, whereas secondary ABCs were managed according to primary pathology. The present review retrospectively studies the case reports of primary ABCs affecting the jaws, reported from the year 2000 (the time when USP6 to CDH 11 gene translocation was detected) to date, to identify cases that were diagnostically confirmed with gene ana

A traumatic bone cyst is a pseudocyst, lacking an epithelial lining, and may contain fluid, connective tissue, or both. The pathogenesis of traumatic bone cyst remains unknown, but the most accepted explanation is the traumatic hemorrhagic theory. A traumatic bone cyst typically presents as a radiolucent lesion. However, it can pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges when it manifests as a mixed entity in an unusual location. The present report describes an exceptional case of a mixed-density traumatic bone cyst involving the mandibular ramus and coronoid process of an 18-year-old man.
