Bilateral Dentigerous Cysts of the Permanent Mandibular First Molars Treated with Marsupialization.

Bilateral dentigerous cysts (DC) associated with unerupted mandibular first molars in a non-syndromic pediatric individual are rare. Secondary infections may lead to complications, such as discomfort due to pain, disfigurement caused by enlargement of the cyst with cortical expansion of the jawbone, displacement of teeth and paraesthesia of the adjacent nerve. This case report describes the occurrence of bilateral DC in an eight-year-old patient. Marsupialization was the treatment of choice to preserve the permanent teeth and other adjacent tissues.

The Temporary Mental Nerve Paresthesia as an Outcome of Dentigerous Cyst Removal during Preparation for Dental Implant Placement: A Case Report.

The usage of xenograft material is widely used in almost all oral cavity bone defects for regenerative and reconstructive purposes. The presented xenograft usage in the following care report enabled good bone defect healing and enabled the preservation of affected premolars. It is quite common to use any possible variations of bone materials to ensure bone defect improved healing. In some cases, the scope of surgeries requires the removal of each cyst within close proximity to various nerves and vessels. The inferior alveolar, infraorbital, lingual, and mental nerves are those most commonly ad

Prominent osteolysis in the maxilla: case report of an odontogenic fibroma mimicking a cyst.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic fibroma (OF) is a rare benign odontogenic tumor of ectomesenchymal origin, mostly affecting the tooth-bearing portions of the jaws in middle-aged patients. Whilst small lesions tend to be clinically asymptomatic, varying unspecific clinical symptoms occur with an increase in size and may mimic odontogenic or other maxillofacial bone tumors, cysts, or fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old female patient presented with a hard, non-fluctuating protrusion in the vestibule of the upper right maxilla. It was visualized on cone beam computed tomo

Whole-Exome Sequencing Identified Two Novel Pathogenic Mutations in the PTCH1 Gene in BCNS.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS, OMIM 109400) is a familial cancer syndrome characterized by the development of numerous basal cell cancers and various other developmental abnormalities, including epidermal cysts of the skin, calcified dural folds, keratocysts of the jaw, palmar and plantar pits, ovarian fibromas, medulloblastomas, lymphomesenteric cysts, and fetal rhabdomyomas. BCNS shows autosomal dominant inheritance and is caused by mutations in the patched 1 (PTCH1) gene and the suppressor of the fused homolog (SUFU) gene. In a few cases, variants of patched 2 (PTCH2) have been found in p

Differential expression of PEA3 in odontogenic cysts and tumors.

BACKGROUND: PEA3 transcription factor has been identified as a downstream target of the MAPK and PI3K pathways, and PEA3 overexpression has been observed in a variety of tumor types. We aimed to evaluate PEA3 expression in odontogenic cysts and tumors and compare the expression among odontogenic lesions. In addition, the correlations between PEA3 expression and clinicopathological characteristics of conventional ameloblastoma and unicystic ameloblastoma were investigated. METHODS: This study was performed on 165 samples of odontogenic cysts and tumors including 20 dentigerous cysts, 20 odonto

Odontogenic myxoma: A case report of a rare tumor.

Odontogenic myxoma is a rare and aggressive tumor. Identifying the tumor based on imaging characteristics can pose a challenge due to similarities in features with other tumors, such as ameloblastomas and aneurysmal bone cysts. We report a 33-year-old female who presented with a palpable, tender mass in the lower right jaw. A computed tomography scan revealed a multicystic tumor which was proved to be an odontogenic myxoma. The patient underwent partial surgical resection followed by CO2 laser-assisted evaporation. During 1-year follow-up, the patient showed satisfactory results and no signs o

Natural bone inspired core-shell triple-layered gel/PCL/gel 3D printed scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

Despite technological advancements in bone tissue engineering, it is still a challenge to fabricate a scaffold with high bioactivity as well as high mechanical strength that can promote osteogenesis as well as bear load. Here we developed a 3D printed gel-polymer multi-layered hybrid scaffold. The innermost layer is porous gel-based framework made of gelatin/carboxymethyl-chitin/nano-hydroxyapatite and is cryogenically 3D printed. Further, the second and middle layer of micro-engineered polycaprolactone (PCL) is infused in the gel with controlled penetration and tuneable coating thickness. The

Evaluation of EWSR1/FUS rearrangements by FISH and NKX2.2 immunoexpression in simple bone cysts of the jaw.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have identified recurrent rearrangements of EWSR1 or FUS with NFATC2 in extragnathic simple bone cysts (SBCs). We investigated the presence of EWSR1 or FUS rearrangements and the immunophenotypic expression of NKX2.2 and CD99 in a series of SBCs of the jaw. STUDY DESIGN: We retrieved 10 cases of SBC of the jaw from the University of Pittsburgh archives. Of the 10 cases, we were able to evaluate 8 by immunohistochemistry for CD99 and NKX2.2 and 7 by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for EWSR1 and FUS rearrangement using EWSR1 and FUS break-apart probes. Telangiectatic osteosarcoma of maxilla in a young child.

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TO) is an uncommon variant of osteosarcoma that primarily afflicts young adults. In this case report, we describe a unique instance of TO occurring in a young child's maxilla. Under microscopic examination, it reveals abundant blood-filled spaces, extensive hemorrhagic regions, alongside atypical pleomorphic tumor cells and osteoid. It is crucial to conduct a meticulous histopathological examination to distinguish TO from other lesions, such as aneurysmal bone cysts and Ewing sarcoma.

Building Automation Pipeline for Diagnostic Classification of Sporadic Odontogenic Keratocysts and Non-Keratocysts Using Whole-Slide Images.

The microscopic diagnostic differentiation of odontogenic cysts from other cysts is intricate and may cause perplexity for both clinicians and pathologists. Of particular interest is the odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), a developmental cyst with unique histopathological and clinical characteristics. Nevertheless, what distinguishes this cyst is its aggressive nature and high tendency for recurrence. Clinicians encounter challenges in dealing with this frequently encountered jaw lesion, as there is no consensus on surgical treatment. Therefore, the accurate and early diagnosis of such cysts will b

Clinicoradiopathologic Analysis of Odontomas: A Retrospective Study of 242 Cases.

Odontomas are considered hamartomatous lesions and are one of the two most common odontogenic tumors of the jaw. Odontomas are classified as compound or complex. Recently, ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) and ameloblastic fibro-dentinoma were reclassified as developing odontomas. Though clinically odontomas are usually asymptomatic, they have adverse effects on adjacent teeth such as tooth impaction, delayed eruption, displacement of teeth, over-retention of teeth, and can give rise to odontogenic cysts within the jaw. We sought to evaluate the clinicoradiopathologic presentations of odontoma

Enucleation of jaw cyst combined with intentional replantation to retain cyst-involved teeth.

BACKGROUND: Jaw cysts often deeply involve adjacent tooth roots, making it difficult to preserve them. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the effectiveness of an intentional replantation (IR) strategy combined with cyst enucleation in preserving cyst-involved teeth during jaw cyst removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with jaw cysts and deeply involved teeth were treated with IR and cyst enucleation. All patients received root canal therapy prior to surgery, except for one patient who received it during surgery. The involved teeth were extracted, and the roo

Osteoma of the Jaw as First Clinical Sign of Gardner's Syndrome: The Experience of Two Italian Centers and Review.

Gardner's syndrome (GS) is a combination of polyposis, osteomas, fibromas, and sebaceous cysts. The aim of the study is to highlight whether maxillofacial osteoma could represent an early detection symptom of GS. Patients with suspected osteoma of the jaw underwent genetic and radiographical examinations. The database gathered 19 patients with oral osteoma that was histologically diagnosed; the whole sample was positive for APC gene mutation. Other cranial and peripheral locations were reported. Osteoma of the jaw is a crucial predictive factor of GS, and dentists and oral and maxillofacial su

Dermoid Cyst of the Hard Palate: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Dermoid and epidermoid cysts are congenital or acquired benign developmental cysts that uncommonly occur in the head and neck region. These cysts represent less than 0.01% of all cysts of the oral cavity and can be found on the tongue, lips and other oral mucosa locations. The palate is less frequently affected with most reported cysts being limited to the soft palate. In this study, we report a case of a dermoid cyst of the hard palate, and discuss its management with a review of the literature.
