Clinicopathology and Recurrence Analysis of 44 Jaw Aneurysmal Bone Cyst Cases: A Literature Review.

In the past half-century, considerable attention has been paid to oral and maxillofacial skeletal cyst, however, aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), unlike other common bone diseases, still contours numerous unanswered questions in terms of classification, etiology and pathological mechanism. The purpose of this article was to evaluate the proportion of primary ABC and secondary ABC, and to assess the recurrence of ABC and related factors. A methodical search of Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science was conducted for well-documented jaw aneurysmal bone cyst (JABC) cases. One hundred thirty

Role of Carnoy's solution as treatment adjunct in jaw lesions other than odontogenic keratocyst: a systematic review.

Carnoy's solution (CS) is routinely used as adjuvant therapy in the management of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and a few other benign lesions. The purpose of this study was to explore the evidence of its application and efficacy in benign lesions other than OKC. We have systematically reviewed published articles to identify the evidence of CS in benign jaw lesions other than OKC following the PRISMA guidelines. The search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and Cochrane Library database, to find relevant articles from 1980 to March 2020. Finally, 39 studies were analysed

Evaluation and Management of Impacted Teeth in the Adolescent Patient.

The most common oral and maxillofacial surgical procedure in adolescents is excision of impacted third molars. Adolescent patients should be evaluated for third molars starting around age 16 years unless symptomatic at an earlier age. The dental examination should include panorex imaging to assess development, pathologic condition, and possibility of eruption versus impaction. Various classification systems are available to identify the position and difficulty of the proposed surgical procedure. Retained impacted teeth increase the patient's risk of various morbidities including recurrent infe

What factors differentiate dentigerous cysts from other pericoronal lesions?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the histopathologic outcomes of pericoronal radiolucencies and identify factors predictive of diagnosis. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study of 258 patients with 280 radiolucent pericoronal lesions undergoing treatment at our institution between 2005 and 2019. The primary predictor variable was lesion size (≥2 cm and <2 cm). The primary outcome variable was histopathologic diagnosis (dentigerous cyst vs other pathologic entity). Descriptive, bivariate, and multiple logistic regression statistics were computed to measure the association between clinical and radiog

Minimally Invasive Two-Staged Surgery in the Treatment of Large Cystic Lesions of the Jaw.

BACKGROUND: Cystic lesions of the jaw are commonly found in clinical practice. Large, expansive cysts raise challenges for the clinician from both diagnostic and surgical perspectives. The aim of our work is to present a combined, two-staged surgical approach in histologically confirmed non-aggressive cystic lesions of the jaw. METHODS AND RESULTS: We report the case of an extensive mandibular cyst, associating a high risk of bone fracture, that is treated in the initial stage by cystic decompression through marsupialization with concomitant histological diagnostic confirmation, followed in t

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst: A Diagnostic and Management Dilemma.

The glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare odontogenic cyst that can develop in the maxillofacial region with aggressive behavior. It tends to develop into enormous proportions with high recurrence rates. The mandibular anterior area is the common site of occurrence of GOC, and it appears as an asymptomatic slow-growing swelling. GOC mimics other odontogenic cysts and tumors both clinically and radiographically, thus posing difficulty in diagnosis. Due to the aggressive potential of GOC, precise diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial. Both conservative and aggressive surgical therapies

Microdeletion of 9q22.3: A patient with minimal deletion size associated with a severe phenotype.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (also known as Gorlin Syndrome; MIM109400) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by recurrent pathological features such as basal cell carcinomas and odontogenic keratocysts as well as skeletal abnormalities. Most affected individuals have point mutations or small insertions or deletions within the PTCH1 gene on human chromosome 9, but there are some cases with more extensive deletion of the region, usually including the neighboring FANCC and/or ERCC6L2 genes. We report a 16-year-old patient with a deletion of approximately 400,000 bases which removes only P

Dental pathologies in tumor patients with bone metastases or multiple myeloma scheduled for antiresorptive therapy.

Background: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a potentially severe complication of mainly antiresorptive drugs. We evaluated the frequency of dentoalveolar pathologies in patients scheduled for antiresorptive therapy in a 'real-world' setting, also including patients with poor oral health potentially requiring tooth extractions and/or other dentoalveolar surgery. This approach is in contrast to the setting of recent randomized trials with restrictive exclusion criteria. Patients & methods: We prospectively included patients suffering from solid tumors with osseous metastas

[The role of interdisciplinary communication in the proper diagnostics of jaw cyst].

Módszer: Korábbi, más célú retrospektív elemzés újraértékelése történt a klinikai (radiológiai) adatközlés, a revízió kapcsán módosuló

Developmental Odontogenic Lesions Associated with the Crown of an Impacted Tooth: A Guide to the Distinct Histologic Features Required for Classification.

Odontogenic cysts are categorized as inflammatory and developmental. Of the developmental odontogenic cysts, the dentigerous cyst is the most common and by definition is attached to the cervical region of an unerupted tooth. The cyst envelops the crown forming a sac. However, there are other developmental cysts, and rarely, odontogenic tumors, that can have a similar clinical and radiographic presentation as dentigerous cyst, including odontogenic keratocyst, orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst and ameloblastoma, unicystic type. Understanding the key histologic differences of these cysts will ai

Cystic Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Jaws: Twelve Cases Highlighting Histopathological Pitfalls.

Cystic squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the jaws, including carcinoma cuniculatum, are rare, slow growing, and relentlessly invasive. The aim of this article is to present 12 cases, 4 of which were designated as carcinoma cuniculatum on the basis of deeply endophytic, anastomosing channels of cystic stratified squamous epithelium and keratin microabscesses. The other 8 were also cystic, but more heterogeneous morphologically and were diagnosed as well differentiated SCCs. Six patients were female, 6 were male (mean age = 74.0 years, range = 50-94 years). Six tumors affected the mandible, 6 t
