Epidermoid cyst: Report of two cases.

Epidermoid cysts (ECs) are uncommon, benign cystic lesions derived from the entrapment of surface epithelium or more often from the aberrant healing of infundibular epithelium during an episode of follicular inflammation. ECs occur anywhere on the body, particularly along embryonic fusion lines, most commonly on the face, scalp, neck, chest and upper back. Head and neck ECs constitute only about 7%, whereas only 1.6% of ECs are reported in the oral cavity. They comprise <0.01% of all the oral cysts. Floor of the mouth, tongue, lips, palate, jaws, etc., are some of the reported sites of ECs in

Pachyonychia Congenita: A Spectrum of KRT6a Mutations in Australian Patients.

BACKGROUND: Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a rare inherited disorder of keratinization characterised by hypertrophic nail dystrophy, painful palmoplantar blisters, cysts, follicular hyperkeratosis and oral leukokeratosis. It is associated with mutations in five differentiation-specific keratin genes, KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16, or KRT17. OBJECTIVES: Living with Pachyonychia Congenita can be isolating. The aim of this paper is to document a single patient's experience within a national context. METHOD: We report the case of a 2 year old female with an atypical presentation of PC due to a muta

Epidermoid Cyst of Mandible Ramus: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: An epidermoid cyst is a benign cyst usually found on the skin. Bone cysts are very rare and if they appear in bone they usually appear in the distal phalanges of the fingers. Epidermoid cysts of the jaws are uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case, of a 41 year-old female patient admitted to our department because of pain and swelling in the parotid and masseteric region-left side. There was no trismus, pathological findings in skin, high body temperature level, infra-alveolar nerves anesthesia or lymphadenopathy present. The orthopantomography revealed a cystic lesion an

A Rare Simultaneous Occurrence of Odontogenic Keratocyst and Unicystic Ameloblastoma in Mandible: A Case Report.

Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) and Ameloblastomas are slow growing benign odontogenic lesions that primarily occur in the molar region of the mandible. Clinically and radiographically both ameloblastoma, especially the Unicystic ameloblastoma and OKC are indistinguishable due to the similar location of occurrence and the age of patients. It is very rare for these lesions to arise simultaneously in a patient's jaw. The co-occurrence of Ameloblastomas with odontogenic cysts or other odontogenic lesions (histologically in a single lesion)have already been described as combined or hybrid lesions. Th

Glandular odontogenic cyst of the maxilla: a case report and literature review.

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst is a relatively rare cyst of odontogenic origin, which shows glandular or salivary features that are thought to indicate the pluripotentiality of odontogenic epithelium. It is seen in middle-aged adults, and commonly involves the anterior region of the jaws, especially the mandible. It shows non-specific clinico-radiographic findings which may resemble other lesions, but has characteristic histopathologic features which help in its diagnosis. This paper reports an unusual presentation of a glandular odontogenic cyst which was diagnosed in a 64-year old female in the

Boils at Frictional Locations in a Patient with Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Dear Editor, Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory skin disease. The primary clinical presentation are painful inflamed nodules or boils of inverse areas, i.e. the axillary and anogenito-crural regions, but it can also involve the infra- and inter-mammary regions (1,2). The etiology of HS is not clearly defined. Obesity, smoking, and genetic factors are considered important risk factors. In addition, it has also been suggested that friction may contribute to the development of HS, especially in the obese, but this is based on highly anecdotal reports (3-5). We des

Congenital huge submandibular and neck teratoid cyst in newborn.

Head and neck teratoid cysts are the least common congenital cysts in the head and neck region, accounting for approximately 1.8% of all dermoid cysts. Teratoid cysts exhibiting mesodermal elements may be lined by gastric, intestinal, respiratory, squamous, or cilitated epithelium. We present a case of huge submandibular and neck teratoid cyst in newborn with airway obstruction and feeding difficulty. Surgical extirpation is the treatment of choice. However, before operation, some other cystic diseases in the head and neck region needs to be excluded. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy was necessar

Calcifying ghost cell odontogenic tumor (CGCOT) with predominance of clear cells: a case report with important diagnostic considerations.

An 18-year-old female reported painful swelling in the left maxillary region 4 months after the extraction of tooth #15. Because incisional biopsy suggested ameloblastoma with clear-cell changes, segmental resection was performed. The microscopic examination of the excised tissue revealed histomorphologic diversity, with features of typical calcifying ghost cell odontogenic tumor (CGCOT) and a significant clear-cell component constituting more than 50% of the tumor mass without any features of malignancy. Clear cells were periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive and mucicarmine negative. CK19 was s

Simultaneous Detection of Both Single Nucleotide Variations and Copy Number Alterations by Next-Generation Sequencing in Gorlin Syndrome.

Gorlin syndrome (GS) is an autosomal dominant disorder that predisposes affected individuals to developmental defects and tumorigenesis, and caused mainly by heterozygous germline PTCH1 mutations. Despite exhaustive analysis, PTCH1 mutations are often unidentifiable in some patients; the failure to detect mutations is presumably because of mutations occurred in other causative genes or outside of analyzed regions of PTCH1, or copy number alterations (CNAs). In this study, we subjected a cohort of GS-affected individuals from six unrelated families to next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis f

[Complex treatment of a large radicular cyst in the anterior region of the maxilla. Case report].

As opposed to other odontogenic cysts, the radicular cyst is always produced by intraradicular infection, therefore it is important to eliminate the cause of the inflammation as well. During the healing of the radicular cyst, the infected tooth should be treated by extraction or root canal treatment completed by surgical intervention. The presented case is a 77 year-old male patient with Type II Diabetes, who required oral surgery and endodontic treatment. Despite of the age and diabetes of the patient, the bone regeneration was rapid and complete. Seven months after starting the treatment, th

Diagnosis and treatment of benign liver nodules: Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH) recommendations.

Space-occupying lesions of the liver may be cystic or solid. Ultrasonography is an extremely useful method for initial screening, and suffices for diagnosis of simple hepatic cysts. Complex cysts and solid masses require computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging for confirmation. Wide surgical excision is indicated in cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma. Clinical and epidemiological data are important, as nodules in noncirrhotic livers are more likely to be benign. Hemangiomas, the most common benign tumors, require no follow-up after diagnostic confirmation if they are small and asympto
