Extranodal malignant lymphoma of the upperaerodigestive tract in King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital according to WHO classification.

BACKGROUND: The Working Formulation commonly used to classify NHL in Thailand has been recognized as imperfect for primary extranodal lymphoma, especially in head and neck regions. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of extranodal malignant lymphoma of the upper aerodigestive tract according to WHO classification. SETTING: King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. DESIGN: Descriptive study. PATIENTS: 77 Thai patients who presented between 1998 and 2003. METHODS: Routine histology was performed and stained with H&E and immunohistochemistry, and clinical

Smokeless tobacco and oral cancer: a review of the risks and determinants.

Smokeless tobacco has been associated with oral cancer for many decades. The purpose of this article is to review research relevant to this association, including epidemiologic studies, studies of putative carcinogens such as tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) and other contaminants, and possible cancer inhibitors. Epidemiologic studies addressing this issue primarily consist of case-control studies. They show that the use of chewing tobacco and moist snuff is associated with very low risks for cancers of the oral cavity and related structures (relative risks [RR] from 0.6 to 1.7). The use

Ovarian cancer in Western Australia (1982-98): incidence, mortality and survival.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the trends in incidence and mortality and estimate survival for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Western Australia. CASE SELECTION AND METHODS: There were 1,336 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1982-98. Age-standardised rates were calculated by the direct method. Age-period and age-cohort models were analysed by Poisson regression. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate survival and Cox proportional hazards regression evaluated the relative risk of dying. RESULTS: Trends in age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates showed little changed over the t

Node counts in neck dissection: are they useful in outcomes research?

OBJECTIVES: We studied the unilateral nodal yields for procedures reported as standard or modified radical neck dissection (RND) to determine their applicability in outcomes research. METHODS: We analyzed the unilateral nodal yields for all procedures reported as RND for carcinoma of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx at our institution from 1985 to 1997 (n = 64, no prior treatment). These included both standard and modified techniques, encompassing levels I through V of the neck. Each side of a bilateral RND was treated as a separate case. This sample was compared with a similar population

Trends and spatial distribution of oral cancer mortality in São Paulo, Brazil, 1980-1998.

We assessed oral cancer mortality data in São Paulo to study trends of the disease and its distribution by areas of the city. We standardized death rates by gender and age group, and also supplied complementary information regarding oral cancer incidence. Oral cancer mortality remained stationary at high levels during the study period. Site-specific death rates revealed high figures for two categories of site: tongue and unspecified parts of mouth. Gum cancer death rates--the most easily diagnosed site-specific oral cancer at a routine dental examination--fell sharply, possibly as a consequenc

Variation in survival of patients with head and neck cancer in Europe by the site of origin of the tumours. EUROCARE Working Group.

The study describes the prognosis of head and neck cancer in Europe on the basis of information available to population-based cancer registries collaborating in the EUROCARE II project. Variation in survival in relation to country and the anatomical site/sub-site of origin of the tumours was examined. Survival analysis was carried out on 35,004 head and neck cancer cases (ICD 141, 143-148 and 161) diagnosed between 1985 and 1989 in 17 European countries. Prognosis varied considerably according to anatomical site: the best 5-year survival rates were seen for cancer of the larynx (63% in men) an

Malignant salivary gland tumours in Sweden 1960-1989--an epidemiological study.

Epidemiological data from the Swedish Cancer Registry of new cases of malignant major and accessory salivary gland tumors in Sweden between 1960 and 1989 are presented, including the total number and the age-standardised incidence rate per 1 million population, by site and sex, I(s). An analysis of the various histopathological types of malignant salivary gland tumours in the different sublocations is also given. A comparison is made between the three 10-year periods 1960-1969, 1970-1979 and 1980-1989 regarding total number and I(s). The total number of new malignant major salivary gland tumor

Increased cancer risk among Swedish female alcoholics.

We evaluated site-specific cancer risks in alcoholic women. We identified 15,508 alcoholic women from the records of the Temperance Boards in Sweden and obtained a comparison group by selecting for each alcoholic woman one female individual matched for region and day of birth. We obtained incidence data from the Swedish Cancer Registry. We found an increased relative risk (RR) for any cancer [RR = 1.6; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.5-1.8]; site-specific risks were increased for tongue (RR = 8.5; 95% CI = 2.0-37), mouth (RR = 12; 95% CI = 1.6-92), tonsil (RR = 11; 95% CI = 1.4-85), hypophary
