Bruxism in awake dogs as a clinical sign of forebrain disease: 4 cases.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is a repetitive masticatory muscle activity characterized by clenching or grinding of the teeth, or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible, or both. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether bruxism in awake dogs could be associated with brain lesions. ANIMALS: Four dogs with episodic bruxism in the awake state. METHODS: Observational retrospective single-center case series. Inclusion criteria were dogs examined between 2010 and 2021 with episodic bruxism as a presenting complaint or observed during the examination or hospitalization, complete medical records and magnetic reso

Sinonasal Manifestations of Severe Cherubism: A Case with 11-year Follow-up.

Cherubism, a type of fibroosteodysplasia, is a rare hereditary disease that causes variable degrees of facial deformity in children. Hypertrophy of the mandible is the most common symptom, but in severe cases, the disease affects the eyes, teeth, and sinonasal cavity. There have been few reports regarding sinonasal complications and no standard treatment has been established. This paper reports long-term treatment of severe cherubism that invaded the sinonasal cavity treated with consecutive endoscopic sinonasal surgeries.

National Undervaluation of Cleft Surgical Services: Evidence from a Comparative Analysis of 50,450 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Relative value units (RVUs) are broadly used for billing and physician compensation; however, the accuracy of RVU assignments has not been scientifically evaluated for craniofacial surgery. The authors hypothesize that unbalanced RVU allocation creates inappropriate disparities in value among procedures performed by cleft and craniofacial surgeons. METHODS: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric database was queried to identify all cleft and craniofacial surgery cases performed by plastic surgeons from 2012 to 2019 based on CPT code. Microsurgical cases and CP

Altered sulfation status of FAM20C-dependent chondroitin sulfate is associated with osteosclerotic bone dysplasia.

Raine syndrome, a lethal osteosclerotic bone dysplasia in humans, is caused by loss-of-function mutations in FAM20C; however, Fam20c deficiency in mice does not recapitulate the human disorder, so the underlying pathoetiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we show that FAM20C, in addition to the reported casein kinase activity, also fine-tunes the biosynthesis of chondroitin sulfate (CS) chains to impact bone homeostasis. Specifically, FAM20C with Raine-originated mutations loses the ability to interact with chondroitin 4-O-sulfotransferase-1, and is associated with reduced 4-sul

Response of Central Giant Cell Granuloma of the Jaw to Imatinib.

Central giant cell granuloma of the jaw (CGCJ) can be locally aggressive and result in facial and dental deformity. A child with CGCJ was treated surgically and with denosumab with a response but life-threatening toxicity. Imatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, was prescribed based on clinical similarities between CGCJ and cherubism, for which Imatinib has been effective. Within 2 months, a computed tomographic scan showed significant ossification, which increased over the following 8 months. This case suggests that tyrosine kinase inhibitors may be an effective option, and one with limited to

Long-term facial symmetry after pediatric mandibular reconstruction using the vascularized fibula free flap: A photogrammetric analysis.

BACKGROUND: The fibula free flap is the standard of care in the reconstruction of large mandibular defects in pediatric patients, enabling adequate restoration of the facial contour. However, the unpredictable growth potential of the reconstructed mandible could influence the preservation of the initially restored symmetry over time. Being mindful of the importance of facial appearance during developmental stages, this study aimed to evaluate the long-term facial symmetry after mandible reconstruction using this technique in growing patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A photogrammetric analysis o

Identification of a new familial case of 3q29 deletion syndrome associated with cleft lip and palate via whole-exome sequencing.

Many unbalanced large copy number variants reviewed in the paper are associated with syndromic orofacial clefts, including a 1.6 Mb deletion on chromosome 3q29. The current report presents a new family with this recurrent deletion identified via whole-exome sequencing and confirmed by array comparative genomic hybridization. The proband exhibited a more severe clinical phenotype than his affected mother, comprising right-sided cleft lip/alveolus and cleft palate, advanced dental caries, heart defect, hypospadias, psychomotor, and speech delay, and an intellectual disability. Data analysis from

Gorlin Syndrome Associated With a Solitary Circumscribed Retinal Astrocytic Proliferation in a Pediatric Patient.

Gorlin syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with near complete penetrance. The underlying genetic mechanism is a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene. Thus far, mutations in patched homolog 1 and 2 genes (PTCH1 and PTCH2) and the suppressor of fused gene (SUFU) have been identified. The syndrome is characterized by neoplasms arising early in childhood as well as developmental abnormalities, including ophthalmic anomalies. We present the first case associating Gorlin syndrome with a rare retinal lesion known as solitary circumscribed retinal astrocytic proliferation (SCRAP). SCRAP is a

Heterogeneous Ni-MoN nanosheet-assembled microspheres for urea-assisted hydrogen production.

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a promising technology for sustainable hydrogen (H2) production; however, it is restricted by the kinetically sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Replacing OER with urea oxidation reaction (UOR) with low thermodynamic potential can simultaneously improve the energy efficiency of H2 production and purify urea-containing wastewater. Here we report a facile assembly-calcination two-step method to synthesize heterogeneous Ni-MoN nanosheet-assembled microspheres (Ni-MoN NAMs). The nanosheet-assembled structure and the synergistic metallic Ni-MoN hete

Goltz Syndrome Combined with Triple X Syndrome, a Case Report.

Goltz syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant multisystem disorder that presents with ectoderm and mesoderm-derived symptoms. Skin manifestations including congenital patchy skin aplasia, congenital nodular fat herniation, congenital hypo- or hyperpigmentation along Blaschko's lines, telangiectasia, and congenital ridged dysplastic nails are typical in this disorder. Almost all cases of Goltz syndrome correspond to female newborns and that hemizygosis makes the syndrome fetal in males. Triple X syndrome is a relatively common congenital disorder that presents with mild to no symptoms in the devel

OTX2 duplications: a recurrent cause of oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum (OAVS) is the second most common cause of head and neck malformations in children after orofacial clefts. OAVS is clinically heterogeneous and characterised by a broad range of clinical features including ear anomalies with or without hearing loss, hemifacial microsomia, orofacial clefts, ocular defects and vertebral abnormalities. Various genetic causes were associated with OAVS and copy number variations represent a recurrent cause of OAVS, but the responsible gene often remains elusive. METHODS: We described an international cohort of 17 patien

Reconstruction of Previously Failed Alveolar Bone Grafts with Medial Femoral Condyle Flap in Pediatric Cleft Lip and Palate Patients.

Alveolar cleft reconstruction is important to increase the quality of life of cleft lip and palate patients. Usually, alveolar clefts can be reconstructed using bone grafts. However, bone grafting can be insufficient, and other alternatives may be necessary in wide and recalcitrant clefts. The medial femoral condyle (MFC) flap may be the solution for alveolar clefts that are impossible to reconstruct with bone grafting. In this study, the reconstruction of alveolar clefts in the pediatric cleft lip and palate population, using the MFC flap, is described. This study examined 9 pediatric patient
