Intrauterine temporomandibular joint dislocation: prenatal sonographic evaluation.

Congenital temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases are very rare disorders and are usually diagnosed in childhood. Developmental disorders of the TMJ such as hypoplasia, hyperplasia, and aplasia of the TMJ compartments are characterized by TMJ dysfunction. In childhood, these patients experience recurrent dislocation, pain, and malocclusion. We present the case of a 25-week fetus with unilateral TMJ dislocation with fluid retention in the joint diagnosed by ultrasonography. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of TMJ dislocation diagnosed by ultrasonographic evaluation during th

Biological reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint by chondro-osseous graft: clinical and experimental study.

This study includes 35 children treated by reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by chondro-osseous graft harvested from iliac crest for management of 2 diseases; the first one was ankylosis of the TMJ. There were 25 cases of 9 girls and 16 boys, and there were 10 cases of hypoplasia of the TMJ of first-arch dysplasia syndrome or hemifacial microsomia, of which 4 were females and 6 were males. Their ages ranged between 4 and 13 years (mean, 8.5 years); follow-up of the patients ranged from 3 to 5 years. All patients showed good result and without recurrence of ankylosis or restri

A potential molecular target for morphological defects of fetal alcohol syndrome: Kir2.1.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a developmental disorder that affects up to 0.2% of births. FASD comprises severe cognitive and structural birth defects including cleft lip/palate, small jaw, wide-set eyes, dental abnormalities, digit abnormalities, small head, and short stature. Strict counseling guidelines stress abstaining from alcohol during pregnancy, but the prevalence of FASD persists. The lack of a convincing molecular target has hindered FASD research and treatment. Interestingly, mutations in an inwardly rectifying potassium channel, Kir2.1, cause a similar constellation of

Treating speech subsystems in childhood apraxia of speech with tactual input: the PROMPT approach.

PURPOSE: Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT; Hayden, 2004; Hayden, Eigen, Walker, & Olsen, 2010)-a treatment approach for the improvement of speech sound disorders in children-uses tactile-kinesthetic- proprioceptive (TKP) cues to support and shape movements of the oral articulators. No research to date has systematically examined the efficacy of PROMPT for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). METHOD: Four children (ages 3;6 [years;months] to 4;8), all meeting the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (2007) criteria for CAS, were treated using

Non-trisomic homeobox gene expression during craniofacial development in the Ts65Dn mouse model of Down syndrome.

Trisomy 21 in humans causes cognitive impairment, craniofacial dysmorphology, and heart defects collectively referred to as Down syndrome. Yet, the pathophysiology of these phenotypes is not well understood. Craniofacial alterations may lead to complications in breathing, eating, and communication. Ts65Dn mice exhibit craniofacial alterations that model Down syndrome including a small mandible. We show that Ts65Dn embryos at 13.5 days gestation (E13.5) have a smaller mandibular precursor but a normal sized tongue as compared to euploid embryos, suggesting a relative instead of actual macroglos

Dental perspectives in fibrous dysplasia and McCune-Albright syndrome.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare multisystem disorder characterized by the triad of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (FD), endocrine disorders, and café-au-lait skin pigmentation. Ninety percent of MAS patients have FD lesions in the craniofacial area, resulting in significant orofacial deformity, dental disorders, bone pain, and compromised oral health. Maxillomandibular FD is also associated with dental developmental disorders, malocclusion, and high caries index. There are limited data on the outcomes of dental treatments in maxillomandibular FD/MAS patients, because clinicians and res

Articular cartilage degeneration in the contralateral non-surgical temporomandibular joint in mice with a unilateral partial discectomy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to characterize the contralateral non-surgical temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in mice that had an opposing osteoarthrosis(OA)-like joint induced by unilateral partial discectomy. METHODS: TMJs on one side in mice were subjected to partial discectomy. Both surgical and contralateral non-surgical TMJs were collected at 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks post-surgery for histological examination. The morphology of the articular cartilage of the condyle was evaluated using a scoring system. RESULTS: A progression of articular cartilage degeneration was seen in the TMJs following u

Tooth developmental anomalies in severe combined immunodeficiency disease and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia: common clinical features and treatment outcomes.

AIM: Human Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) is a prenatal disorder of T lymphocyte development that depends on the expression of numerous genes. Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), previously known as juvenile chronic myeloid leukemia (JCML), is a rare, myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative disease typically presenting in early childhood. CASE REPORTS: Two cases are described of immunodeficiency disorders, both treated with chemotherapeutic drugs (Busulfan plus cyclophosphamide) before bone marrow transplantation. After treatment, these two different cases showed several similar oral

Dysphagia and disrupted cranial nerve development in a mouse model of DiGeorge (22q11) deletion syndrome.

We assessed feeding-related developmental anomalies in the LgDel mouse model of chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a common developmental disorder that frequently includes perinatal dysphagia--debilitating feeding, swallowing and nutrition difficulties from birth onward--within its phenotypic spectrum. LgDel pups gain significantly less weight during the first postnatal weeks, and have several signs of respiratory infections due to food aspiration. Most 22q11 genes are expressed in anlagen of craniofacial and brainstem regions critical for feeding and swallowing, and diminished expr

Coronoid process hyperplasia: an unusual cause of mandibular hypomobility.

A large number of disorders affecting the masticatory system can cause restriction of mouth opening. The most common conditions related to this problem are those involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the masticatory muscles, when facial pain also is an usual finding. Congenital or developmental mandibular disorders are also possible causes for mouth opening limitation, although in a very small prevalence. Coronoid process hyperplasia (CPH) is an example of these cases, characterized by an excessive coronoid process growing, where mandibular movements become limited by the impaction o

A zebrafish model of congenital disorders of glycosylation with phosphomannose isomerase deficiency reveals an early opportunity for corrective mannose supplementation.

Individuals with congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) have recessive mutations in genes required for protein N-glycosylation, resulting in multi-systemic disease. Despite the well-characterized biochemical consequences in these individuals, the underlying cellular defects that contribute to CDG are not well understood. Synthesis of the lipid-linked oligosaccharide (LLO), which serves as the sugar donor for the N-glycosylation of secretory proteins, requires conversion of fructose-6-phosphate to mannose-6-phosphate via the phosphomannose isomerase (MPI) enzyme. Individuals who are defici

Biochemical markers as predictors of bone remodelling in dental disorders: a narrative description of literature.

Osteoporosis is a systemic disease in which the skeletal condition is characterized by a decreased mass of normally mineralized bone, due to an augmentation of bone resorption processes. Bone biomarkers serum are used for the diagnosis. On the other hand the main cause of the resorption in the bone jaws are periodontitis, inflammatory cysts, developmental cysts, odontogenic neoplasms. Periodontal diseases can be localized to a single site of the jaws or can affect all the teeth, with a massive bone resorption. The cysts are classified in developmental and inflammatory. They caused a local bone

Burkitt lymphomagenesis linked to MYC plus PI3K in germinal center B cells.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize pathophysiology, key conflicts, and therapeutic approaches in managing concomitant severe acute brain injury (SABI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). RECENT FINDINGS: ARDS is common in SABI and independently associated with worse outcomes in all SABI subtypes. Most landmark ARDS trials excluded patients with SABI, and evidence to guide decisions is limited in this population. Potential areas of conflict in the management of patients with both SABI and ARDS are (1) risk of intracranial pressure (ICP) elevation with high levels of positive end-expir

Treatment of a case of skeletal class II malocclusion with temporomandibular joint disorder using miniscrew anchorage.

At the present time, there are no reports in the literature on the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) by intrusion of molars using mini-screws. This case report describes the treatment for a female patient, aged 19 years seven months, with a TMD and an excessive lower anterior facial height. Overjet and overbite were +5.0 mm and +0.5 mm, respectively. The patient had a history of orthodontic treatment in which her first premolars were all extracted. During the first orthodontic treatment, a clockwise mandibular rotation was observed as a result of the increase of posterior den

Regional odontodysplasia involving three quadrants of the jaws: a case report.

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare developmental anomaly of the teeth that affects enamel and dentin. Its etiology is unknown, but the most accepted theory refers to circulatory disorders associated with vascular nevi. An uncommon case of regional odontodysplasia involving three quadrants of the jaws is reported. An 8-year-old boy was referred to the authors' institution with lack of teeth as a major symptom. There was no hereditary anomaly in the family. Extraoral examination revealed a brown discoloration on the skin on the right side of the face, neck, and chest. Detailed intraoral examinat

Maxillomandibular distraction osteogenesis for Marshall-Smith syndrome.

The Marshall-Smith syndrome is a very rare disorder with early overgrowth and was first reported by Marshall et al. in 1971. Patients with the Marshall-Smith syndrome have characteristic facial features and systemic congenital abnormalities. In many cases, patients die early in the postnatal period due to respiratory disorders. We treated a male child with this syndrome with plastic surgery to improve facial features - the first effort of its kind in the world. We report good results from the surgery. The treatment included bilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis for micrognathia and tra
