[Growth of maxillo-facial region and related anomalies.].

Since maxillo-facial region is quite complex, growth and developmental defect cause various anomalies. It is known that 70% of whole genetic disorders have any symptom or abnormal condition in maxilla-facial region. Cleft lip and/or palate is the most popular congenital anomaly and is seen in 0.2% of general population. Cases with Treacher Collins syndrome and Robin sequence are with respiratory problem due to the small mandible or mandibular retrusion. Achondroplasia is a genetic disease with short-limbed dwarfism due to abnormal proliferation or differentiation of chondrocytes. Interestingly

Gustatory lid retraction: an unusual congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder.

Congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders are developmental abnormalities of cranial nerves that often include abnormal synkinesis. Among the most common ophthalmic congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders are Duane retraction syndrome and the Marcus-Gunn jaw-winking phenomenon. This report documents gustatory lid retraction as an unusual congenital cranial dysinnervation.

Distinct profiles of information-use characterize identity judgments in children and low-expertise adults.

Face processing abilities vary across the life span: increasing across childhood and adolescence, peaking around 30 years of age, and then declining. Despite extensive investigation, researchers have yet to identify qualitative changes in face processing during development that can account for the observed improvements on laboratory tests. The current study constituted the first detailed characterization of face processing strategies in a large group of typically developing children and adults (N = 200) using a novel adaptation of the Bubbles reverse correlation technique (Gosselin & Schyns, 2

Developmental Disorders Affecting Jaws.

Teeth are housed in mandible and maxilla and are known to undergo variations in clinical presentation depending on the degree of abnormality during growth and development. It is essential to identify these variations in normal anatomy so that appropriate treatment can be initiated to address the anomaly. Some normal anatomic variations are harmless and best left alone, whereas others require intervention. Radiology plays a vital role in identification of such anomalies. This article focuses on the diagnostic radiographic interpretation and strategies to include pertinent differential diagnosis

Using cone beam computed tomography to examine the prevalence of condylar bony changes in a Turkish subpopulation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to characterize the condylar bone changes in the temporomandibular region using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to determine the prevalence of these changes in a population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT images of the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) of 795 patients (426 females, 369 males) were retrieved from the computer database. The cross-sectional, coronal and sagittal views of 1-mm-thick sections of the TMJ were generated using CBCT. Age, gender, and bone changes on both condyles were recorded, and data were analyzed using a Chi-square

MEPE Localization in the Craniofacial Complex and Function in Tooth Dentin Formation.

Matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein (MEPE) is an extracellular matrix protein found in dental and skeletal tissues. Although information regarding the role of MEPE in bone and disorders of phosphate metabolism is emerging, the role of MEPE in dental tissues remains unclear. We performed RNA in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry analyses to delineate the expression pattern of MEPE during embryonic and postnatal development in craniofacial mineralizing tissues. Mepe RNA expression was seen within teeth from cap through root formation in association with odontoblasts and cellular ce

Familial Gigantiform Cementoma: Case Report of an Unusual Clinical Manifestation and Possible Mechanism Related To "Calcium Steal Disorder".

Familial gigantiform cementoma is an exceedingly rare but distinct subtype of cemento-osseous-fibrous lesion. Undocumented radiographic changes and related bone metabolism disorder are herein hypothesized and discussed. We present an adolescent case with recurrent familial gigantiform cementoma who received surgical intervention in our hospital. Apart from typical multiquadrant and expansile abnormalies involving both jaws, he also suffered from several times of fractures in lower extremity. Furthermore, radiographic examinations of calvaria, pelvis, femoris, tibia, and fibula all revealed rad

Ultrastructural Analyses of Alveolar Bone in a Patient With Osteomyelitis Secondary to Osteopetrosis: A Review of the Literature.

Osteopetrosis is a generic term for generalized sclerotic conditions caused by rare genetic disorders. Decreased osteoclastic activities disturb bone remodeling, resulting in greater mineral density and greater compressive strength; therefore, bone fracture is a major physical symptom of osteopetrosis. Osteomyelitis of the maxilla or mandible is a common and well-documented complication of osteopetrosis. Local infection, such as odontogenic infection, is more likely to lead to osteomyelitis, and treatment strategies can be challenging. However, detailed ultrastructural analyses of bone from pa

Will unilateral temporomandibular joint anterior disc displacement in teenagers lead to asymmetry of condyle and mandible? A longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the change of morphological symmetry of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) during natural course of unilateral juvenile anterior disc displacement (UJADD) by comparing the ipsilateral joint with the contralateral side; and to analyse its effect over mandibular asymmetry (MA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study is a self-control longitudinal study. Consecutive UJADD cases with no history of TMJ infection, injuries to the jaws, or congenital, developmental and systematic disorders that may affect the craniofacial growth were collected and followed for at least 6 months. ADAM10 is essential for cranial neural crest-derived maxillofacial bone development.

Growth disorders of the craniofacial bones may lead to craniofacial deformities. The majority of maxillofacial bones are derived from cranial neural crest cells via intramembranous bone formation. Any interruption of the craniofacial skeleton development process might lead to craniofacial malformation. A disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM)10 plays an essential role in organ development and tissue integrity in different organs. However, little is known about its function in craniofacial bone formation. Therefore, we investigated the role of ADAM10 in the developing craniofacial skeleton, par

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and assessment of maxillary and mandibular arc measurements.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) comprise a range of physical differences and neurologic deficits from prenatal alcohol exposure. Previous studies suggest that relative maxillary growth deficiency can accompany FASD. Using the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Epidemiologic Research (FASER) database, we investigated how maxillary and mandibular arcs and the ratio between them differ between FASD and non-FASD individuals. First, we established normative values for maxillary and mandibular arcs and maxillary-to-mandibular arc ratio. In our control group (545 males, 436 females), mean maxillary and m

Diagnosis and management of benign fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws: a current review for the dental clinician.

Benign fibro-osseous lesions of the maxillofacial skeleton constitute a heterogeneous group of disorders that includes developmental, reactive (dysplastic) and neoplastic lesions. Although their classification has been reviewed multiple times in the past, the most common benign fibro-osseous lesions are fibrous dysplasia, osseous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma. For the dental clinician, the challenges involve diagnosis and treatment (or lack thereof). A careful correlation of all clinical, radiologic and microscopic features is essential to establish a proper diagnosis and a clear treatment p

Concurrent occurrence of an inherited 16p13.11 microduplication and a de novo 19p13.3 microdeletion involving MAP2K2 in a patient with developmental delay, distinctive facial features, and lambdoid synostosis.

A female patient presented with developmental delay, distinctive facial features, and congenital anomalies, including a heart defect and premature lambdoid synostosis. The patient showed a paternally inherited 16p13.11 microduplication and a de novo 19p13.3 microdeletion involving the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 2 gene (MAP2K2), in which mutations cause the cardio-facio-cutaneous (CFC) syndrome. Reports of patients with overlapping 19p13.3 microdeletions of this region describe similar clinical manifestations including distinctive facial features: prominent forehead, horizontal/dow

Should incidental findings in diagnostic imaging be reported?

BACKGROUND: Recent improvements in image quality have contributed to an increasing number of incidental findings (IF). Also called as "incidentalomas", this generic term refers to an entity discovered unexpectedly on an imaging examination performed for other reason. Commonly, normal variants, minor developmental anomalies and imaging artifacts are described as potential pathology. Some IF were reported in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam of temporomandibular joint (TMJ), including IF in the brain, maxillary sinus, ethmoidal cells, mastoid cells, salivary glands, muscles. The aim of this

Biomechanics of foetal movement.

Foetal movements commence at seven weeks of gestation, with the foetal movement repertoire including twitches, whole body movements, stretches, isolated limb movements, breathing movements, head and neck movements, jaw movements (including yawning, sucking and swallowing) and hiccups by ten weeks of gestational age. There are two key biomechanical aspects to gross foetal movements; the first being that the foetus moves in a dynamically changing constrained physical environment in which the freedom to move becomes increasingly restricted with increasing foetal size and decreasing amniotic fluid

A single nucleotide polymorphism associated with isolated cleft lip and palate, thyroid cancer and hypothyroidism alters the activity of an oral epithelium and thyroid enhancer near FOXE1.

Three common diseases, isolated cleft lip and cleft palate (CLP), hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer all map to the FOXE1 locus, but causative variants have yet to be identified. In patients with CLP, the frequency of coding mutations in FOXE1 fails to account for the risk attributable to this locus, suggesting that the common risk alleles reside in nearby regulatory elements. Using a combination of zebrafish and mouse transgenesis, we screened 15 conserved non-coding sequences for enhancer activity, identifying three that regulate expression in a tissue specific pattern consistent with endogen
