TARP syndrome (Talipes equinovarus, Atrial septal defect, Robin sequence, and Persistence of the left superior vena cava) is a rare genetic condition, caused by developmental defects during embryogenesis. The phenotypic spectrum of TARP shows high clinical variability with patients either missing cardinal features or having additional clinical traits. Initially, TARP was considered a lethal syndrome, but patients with milder symptoms were recently described. The TARP-locus was mapped to the gene RNA-binding motif protein 10 (RBM10) on the human X-chromosome. We clinically and genetically descr

BACKGROUND: Osteopathia Striata with Cranial Sclerosis (OS-CS), also known as Horan-Beighton Syndrome, is a rare genetic disease; about 90 cases have been reported to date. It is associated with mutations (heterozygous for female subjects and hemizygous for males) of the AMER1 gene, located at Xq11.2, and shows an X-linked pattern of transmission. Typical clinical manifestations include macrocephaly, characteristic facial features (frontal bossing, epicanthal folds, hypertelorism, depressed nasal bridge, orofacial cleft, prominent jaw), hearing loss and developmental delay. Males usually prese

Many infants with anotia or microtia (A/M) have co-occurring birth defects, although few receive syndromic diagnoses in the perinatal period. Evaluation of co-occurring birth defects in children with A/M could identify patterns indicative of undiagnosed/unrecognized syndromes. We obtained information on co-occurring birth defects among infants with A/M for delivery years 1999-2014 from the Texas Birth Defects Registry. We calculated observed-to-expected ratios (OER) to identify birth defect combinations that occurred more often than expected by chance. We excluded children diagnosed with genet

Agnathia-otocephaly complex (AOC), a first branchial arch defect, is characterized by mandibular hypoplasia or aplasia, ear abnormalities, microstomia, and macroglossia and is a rare and often fatal diagnosis. Herein, the technical considerations and details of mandibular reconstruction using virtual surgical planning (VSP) and a vascularized free fibula flap for further mandibular reconstruction in a 10-year-old boy are presented. The patient's preoperative examination was consistent with agnathia (absence of mandibular symphysis, bilateral mandibular bodies, condyles, coronoids, rami, and te

BACKGROUND: The tongue is an essential organ accounted for proper deglutition and articulation. Surgical repair should be planned soon after diagnosis of any structural abnormality to prevent later speech and swallowing disorders. The lobulated tongue could be isolated (sporadic) or in association with other disorders. Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) consists of the clinical trial of congenital micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction with variable inclusion of a cleft palate. We present the case of a rare congenital tri-lobed tongue with Pierre Robin sequence and its surgical management

BACKGROUND: Robin sequence (RS) is a triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction. Prenatal diagnosis of RS improves delivery planning and postnatal care, but the process for prenatal diagnosis has not been refined. The purpose of this study was to determine if dynamic cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can improve the reliability of prenatal diagnosis for RS compared to current static imaging techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study including fetuses with prenatal MRIs obtained in a single center from January 2014 to November 2019. Fe

Encephalocele is a malformation due to a defect in the closure of the neural tube causing herniation of brain tissue and/or meninges through this congenital skull defect. The size of encephalocele varies from a few centimeters to a huge mass called "giant encephalocele". Content usually consists of degenerative neural tissue, meninges and a cystic part. We here report the case of a 4-month-old infant, born of non-consanguineous parents, who was referred with congenital occipital mass. Upon arrival at our clinic, clinical examination revealed a weight of 3500g, a head circumference of 33 cm, wi

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain following pediatric cleft lip and palate repair provide unique challenges. As no guidelines presently exist, we sought to identify the most effective and safe perioperative pain management strategies for children undergoing primary cleft lip and palate repair.
METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted. A total of 230 unique titles were then assessed. Pooled analysis of variables was conducted, and data pertaining to common approaches in decreasing postoperative analgesia were compared.

Cleft palate-lateral synechiae syndrome (CPLSS) is an extremely rare congenital malformation syndrome with undetermined etiology, characterized by a cleft palate and lateral intraoral synechiae linking the free borders of the palate to the mouth floor. We report a case of a female neonate, admitted for suckling difficulties with a cleft lip and palate associated to multiple lateral intraoral synechiae. Resection of the synechiae allowed oral feeding. Cleft palate-lateral synechiae syndrome is an exceptional syndrome as only seventeen cases have been reported in the literature. Synechiae can be
