A Scoping Review of the Use of Pioglitazone in the Treatment of Temporo-Mandibular Joint Arthritis.

Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are a group of diabetes medications currently being investigated for anti-arthritis effectiveness, one of which is pioglitazone. The purpose of this scoping review is to evaluate the potential use of pioglitazone in the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis. The criteria of eligibility were studies with the diagnosis of arthritis and pioglitazone treatment with a change in any inflammation index as an outcome. Of the 1169 records initially identified following the selection process, two animal studies and four clinical studies were included in the revie

[Influence of bilateral coronoidectomy on temporomandibular joint stress distribution after costochondral graft reconstruction: a finite element analysis].

PURPOSE: To explore the effect of bilateral coronoidectomy on stress distribution after reconstruction of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by costochondral graft. METHODS: Ten groups of models were established to simulate costochondral graft reconstruction with simultaneously different distances (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 mm) of mandibular advancement, with or without coronoidectomy. Force and stress distribution in the rib-cartilage area were analyzed by finite element analysis. RESULTS: In the process of bilateral joint reconstruction with simultaneously mandible advancement ranging from 0 mm to 8 mm, wh

Vitrified Particulated Articular Cartilage for Joint Resurfacing: A Swine Model.

BACKGROUND: The use of particulated articular cartilage for repairing cartilage defects has been well established, but its use is currently limited by the availability and short shelf life of donor cartilage. Vitrification is an ice-free cryopreservation technology at ultralow temperatures for tissue banking. An optimized vitrification protocol has been developed for particulated articular cartilage; however, the equivalency of the long-term clinical efficacy of vitrified particulated articular cartilage compared with fresh articular cartilage has not yet been determined. Comparison of the histopathological characteristics of diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis of the mandible, chronic suppurative osteomyelitis, and craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: There are relatively few reports on the histopathological characteristics of diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis of the mandible (DSOM), which is difficult to distinguish from chronic suppurative osteomyelitis (CSO) and craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (CFD). This study aimed to summarize and compare the histopathological characteristics of DSOM, CFD, and CSO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of patients with DSOM, CSO, and CFD at the Peking University Hospital of Stomatology from 2015 to 2020 were retrieved. Bricks, trusses and superstructures: Strategies for skeletal reinforcement in batoid fishes (rays and skates).

Crushing and eating hard prey (durophagy) is mechanically demanding. The cartilage jaws of durophagous stingrays are known to be reinforced relative to non-durophagous relatives, with a thickened external cortex of mineralized blocks (tesserae), reinforcing struts inside the jaw (trabeculae), and pavement-like dentition. These strategies for skeletal strengthening against durophagy, however, are largely understood only from myliobatiform stingrays, although a hard prey diet has evolved multiple times in batoid fishes (rays, skates, guitarfishes). We perform a quantitative analysis of micro-CT

Clinical Microbial Identification of Severe Oral Infections by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry in Stockholm County: an 11-Year (2010 to 2020) Epidemiological Investigation.

Growing evidence suggests that oral infections can modify the course of systemic diseases. To date, epidemiological data on microbial oral infections are scarce. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the trend and microbial diversity in oral infection specimens referred for clinical microbiology analysis from 2010 to 2020. The microbes were isolated by culture and were identified via matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry technology (MALDI-TOF MS) throughout the study period. A total of 1,014 referred samples from dental clinics in Stockholm Count

Long-Term Effect of Intermediate Rhinoplasty in Unilateral Complete Cleft Lip Nasal Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Intermediate rhinoplasties are performed during preschool to reduce the patients' psychosocial burden. At our institution, limited dissection of the cartilages followed by suspension and interdomal sutures was performed through an alar rim incision on the cleft side to minimize the risk of iatrogenic nasal growth restriction. However, the long-term outcomes of "limited intermediate rhinoplasty" through skeletal growth are uncertain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all unilateral complete cleft lip and/or palate patients who underwent definitive rhinoplasty was per

Malignant transformation of chronic osteomyelitis of mandible: A rare presentation.

Chronic osteomyelitis is a bone disease that is characterized by inflammatory processes, including necrosis of mineralized and marrow tissues, suppuration, resorption, sclerosis, and hyperplasia. The primary cause of chronic osteomyelitis is usually microbiologic, and it results from an odontogenic infection, postextraction complication, inadequate removal of necrotic bone, early termination of antibiotic therapy, inappropriate selection of antibiotics, diagnostic failure, trauma, inadequate treatment for a fracture, or irradiation to the mandible. The incidence of malignant transformation of

Clinical factors affecting depression in patients with painful temporomandibular disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a multifactorial condition associated with both physical and psychological factors. Stress has been known to trigger or worsens TMD. We aimed to investigate whether the novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic aggravates depression in patients with painful TMD, and the factors that affect their level of depression. We included 112 patients with painful TMD (74 females, 38 males; mean age: 35.90 ± 17.60 years; myalgia [n = 38], arthralgia [n = 43], mixed joint-muscle TMD pain [n = 31]). TMD was diagnosed based on the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD Ax

Activation of the VpdmVGLUT1-VPM pathway contributes to anxiety-like behaviors induced by malocclusion.

Occlusal disharmony has a negative impact on emotion. The mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) neurons are the primary afferent nuclei that convey proprioceptive information from proprioceptors and low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the periodontal ligament and jaw muscles in the cranio-oro-facial regions. The dorsomedial part of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (Vpdm) and the ventral posteromedial nucleus (VPM) of thalamus have been proven to be crucial relay stations in ascending pathway of proprioception. The VPM sends numerous projections to primary somatosensory areas (SI), which

Botulinum toxin in the management of myalgia in temporomandibular disorders: are all injections equal?

Botulinum toxin (BTX) is becoming widely used as an adjunct to conservative management of myalgia-predominant temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) with reports of improved quality of life. There is, however, no consensus on the optimal dosage. Based on previous studies, dose regimens vary between clinicians, and we know of no standard dose protocol for the administration of BTX for the purpose of TMD management. A survey was sent to members of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) Temporomandibular Joint Sub-Specialty Interest Group (TMJ SSIG) and an international ma
